I congratulate all of riders for their efforts.”

Members of the squad and alternates will arrive in Lexington on September 18th, giving them time to focus prior to the competition on September 26. The 160 km race, which will wind through the beautiful bluegrass countryside, will consist of five compulsory veterinary checks and hold times where the horses will be carefully monitored. The riders must complete the course in less than 12 hrs 20 min, but it is anticipated that the winning times will be much faster, but the final time is always dependent on weather conditions.

“I’ve had a wonderful opportunity this year to attend numerous FEI CEI 3* 160 km competitions in both the US and Canada to observe our elite athletes compete with top riders in North America who were building their resumes and fine-tuning their conditioning — all in preparation for the WEG,” Kay Melvin, Chef d’équipe of the Canadian Endurance Team. “I sincerely congratulate the members of our squad, and I look forward to being with them and the rest of the team officials and crew in Kentucky doing what we do best, which is working as a Team going for a spot on the podium.”

The official first veterinary inspection will occur on September 25, and following the inspection, the official Team and Individual competitors will be announced.

New Zealand: Second blow for NZ endurance team as groom row escalates

by Robin Marshall

By any standards, it looked to be an unbeatable team. A two-time national champion horse and rider, with an elite coach and former world champion as top groom, and a New Zealand World Games representative as second groom.

But not in the eyes of New Zealand endurance selectors.

The country's hopes of regaining its footing on the world endurance riding stage have faltered with the withdrawal of two-time national champion Jenny Champion from the country's World Equestrian Games endurance team.

The withdrawal of the Eketahuna-based rider follows the defection of 2010 national champion Sue Reid from the team two weeks ago. With two riders gone from the squad of five, it means that the three remaining riders must all complete the event for New Zealand to be in with a chance of success. Previously, one rider was to compete as an individual and the other four as a team.

Endurance is a sport with training and consistency at its heart. But New Zealand team riders have been told who will be grooming for them at the World Games...

WEG: Horse and rider pushed to the limits

It costs $20,000 US to send a horse overseas by FedEx.

But local endurance horseback riders Gail Jewell and Elroy Karius have dodged that cost this year, as the World Equestrian Games visit North America for the first time.

Jewell and Karius both qualified for the Canadian team during nationals held July 1 in New Lowell, Ont.

The 100-mile race was completed in sections. The pair would ride out in a 12 to 20 mile loop from camp, return and hold with the race timer still running, and then go out again.

“Technically, you have 24 hours to complete a 100-mile race,” said Jewell.

At the level the pair are currently riding at, the distance usually takes anywhere from eight to 12 hours.

Her goal was to come in under 12 hours and 18 minutes, in order to qualify the horse she was riding as an alternate for the World Equestrian Games.

She was successful.

Jewell said she is the only one on the team that has qualified several horses as backup.

Karius and his horse Apache both qualified as the number one horse and rider in Canada.

2010 WEG: WEG: Kentucky State Vet's Office Safeguards Equine Athletes at Games

Thehorse.com - Full Article

by: Press Release
July 28 2010, Article # 16706

The Kentucky state veterinarian's office has the yeoman's responsibility to regulate and manage the importation of an estimated 800 horses representing 62 countries that are scheduled to participate in the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games Sept. 25-Oct. 10 at the Kentucky Horse Park near Lexington.

"The World Equestrian Games are far greater in size and scope than anything the state veterinarian's office has managed before," Agriculture Commissioner Richie Farmer said. "However, the staff of the state veterinarian's office has vast experience in equine health and works several large-scale and high-profile events every year. These equine athletes couldn't be in better hands."

"The state veterinarian's office is committed to providing a healthy environment for the horses that will come to Kentucky to compete in the Games," State Veterinarian Robert Stout, DVM, said.

Five equine inspectors currently conduct inspections at the horse park, averaging 130 inspection hours per week, said E.S. Rusty Ford, DVM, equine programs magager for the Kentucky State Veterinarian. The Office of the State Veterinarian (OSV) is working to ensure that the horse park's resident equines meet the health requirements of the equestrian sport's governing body, the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI).

On Sept. 16, the largest airlift of horses to a single event in history will begin arriving in the U.S. Three-quarters of the horses will land at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport. The horses will spend their first 42 hours in Kentucky in stalls inside the barns at the recently constructed Northern Kentucky Temporary Quarantine.

Other horses will be quarantined at the Miami Animal Import Center and Los Angeles International Airport. Horses from North America will be transported to the horse park by truck.

Any imported horse presenting evidence or suspicion of illness will be held in quarantine and not permitted to travel to the horse park until the concern is resolved.

Prior to entering the park, all horses will be required to pass a KDA inspection and have their health status verified in order to be admitted to the stable area. All horses on the park grounds will be continuously monitored and evaluated daily by KDA, FEI, and World Equestrian Games personnel.

Planning and preparation to make Kentucky a viable option began long before Kentucky was selected to host the 2010 Games.

"There was work that had to be done before Kentucky could even bid for the Games," Ford said. "When you're allowing horses from all over world to be imported to Kentucky, you have to mitigate all potential risks. And we're confident that we've done that." The OSV's goals are to provide a safe and healthy environment for the horses coming to the Games and prepare to detect early, respond to and resolve any potential disease threat.

"With so many horses coming from all over the world, we have spent considerable time and resources to better familiarize ourselves with and understand a much broader spectrum of equine disease than what we have dealt with on a day-to-day basis our entire careers," Ford said. "We are confident that, with the preparations we have done, and with our daily presence and readiness during the World Equestrian Games, there will be no safer place than the Kentucky Horse Park to host an event of this magnitude."

An agency of the Kentucky Department of Agriculture, the Office of the State Veterinarian is responsible for preparing for, detecting and responding to potential illnesses and mitigating risk of disease transmission.

"We look forward to welcoming competitors and visitors from around the world to the World Equestrian Games this fall," Commissioner Farmer said.

New Zealand: Endurance rider withdraws from World Equestrian Games

China: Playing horse whisperer

China.org.cn - Full Article

China Daily, July 22, 2010

Equestrian endurance racing is a sport that tests the mental and physical limits of both rider and horse. Alexis Hooi gets a taste of this deep in the heart of Xinjiang.

Packs of horses break through the morning mist on the horizon, as local grooms nearby slap on saddles and tighten bridles on their prized geldings and mares. The rising sun lights up the deep-blue sky above and slowly dissipates the dew on the surrounding yurts, decorated with ethnic Mongolian tapestry. I am in Bayanbulak, one of the country's largest and most beautiful grasslands in the Beyinguoleng Mongolian autonomous prefecture of the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region. But my heart pounds louder than the horses running about me and enjoying the breathtaking scenery is the last thing on my mind.

Instead, I am focused on making it through the 2nd Bayanbulak Swan Lake Equestrian Endurance Race being held in Xinjiang's Hejing county.

When the local authorities organized the area's first equestrian endurance race last year, at least six horses out of the more than 100 that took part dropped dead from exhaustion.

Riders had to cover more than 150 km in less than a day on local Mongolian horses famous for their strength and stamina.

But this year, competition organizers promise a different approach: The race goes global and has to adhere to international competition standards as set out by the International Federation for Equestrian Sports or FEI, the worldwide governing body for the sport.

This means the welfare of the horses in the race will be given top priority...

Easyboot Horse Wins The Haggin Cup at the 2010 Tevis

Easycare Press Release:
Tuesday July 27, 2010
Auburn, California

Garrett Ford rode The Fury to an impressive eighth place finish at the 2010 edition of the Tevis 100 mile race on July 24. He was accompanied by his wife, Lisa Ford, who rode Cyclone to the ninth place finsh. The Fury and Cyclone were two of 34 horses who were competing in the Tevis race as part of the Ride Tevis for Free contest sponsored by EasyCare.

The Fury also won the coveted Haggin Cup. The Haggin Cup award is intended to recognize exceptional sportsmanship and horsemanship as demonstrated by the superior condition of the contestant’s horse during and at the completion of the ride. In other endurance events, the award tends to be based almost solely on the “best condition” judging held after the Ride and focuses on the criteria of “fit to go on."

"I think of The Fury as the horse of a lifetime," said Ford. "He is eight years old and I knew when I rode him for the first time last year that there was something special about this horse. When we got into the Foresthill vet check at 75 miles, he still had so much to give. As we set out on the last leg of the race, I decided to unleash The Fury!"

John Crandell III, who took first place at the event, rode the last six miles from Lower Quarry to the Auburn Fairgrounds in 64 minutes. Garrett and Lisa Ford traveled the same distance in 47 minutes, jumping from 16th and 17th respectively to 8th and 9th place.

Haggin Cup judging observations of contestants and their mounts are made throughout the ride, beginning with the initial check-in and subsequent veterinary checks by members of the veterinary examining and Cup Committees. Findings are documented by the veterinarians and made available to Cup Committee members.

Fury's Haggin Cup win is of particular note because he is the first barefoot horse in the 54 years of the race to win the award. Garrett trains and competes The Fury in Easyboot Gloves and uses Easyboot Glue-Ons for only a few races: the 2010 edition of Tevis was one of them. 21 of the horses competing in the EasyCare Ride Tevis for Free contest went on to cross the finish line in Auburn - including the last place horses, Cira and Sonny ridden by Kathie Ford and Kathy Sherman. Six of those horses finished in the top 20 positions.

Also worthy of note is the 62% completion rate of the horses competing in the Ride Tevis for Free Contest: the overall race had 182 horses start and 93 horses complete - a completion rate of 51%.

It was a red letter day for Easyboots and for the natural hoof care movement at large.

John Crandell and Heraldic Win 2010 Tevis!

Colfax Journal - Original Article

Michael Kirby/Auburn Journal

John Crandell, riding Heraldic, crosses
the finish line to win the 55th Tevis Cup
endurance ride Saturday at the Auburn
Overlook Staging Area. Close behind is
Shannon Constanti, who rode Crandell’s
horse LR Bold Greyson to second place.
John Crandell was so prepared for the Tevis Cup endurance ride that even his backup horse spent time in the spotlight Saturday night at McCann Stadium.

Crandell’s dominant horse Heraldic trotted across the finish line as the pair won their second Tevis Cup Saturday. Just a few feet behind was Auburn’s Shannon Constanti, riding Crandell’s horse LR Bold Greyson.

The ferrier from Star Tanney, Va. brought two horses across the country for the 100-mile ride from Robie Park in Truckee to Auburn. He decided just days before the ride that both horses had the legs to make it across the rugged trail.

“I had a good feeling because (Bold Greyson’s) a young horse – it’s only his third 100 – I felt like he could reasonably keep up,” Crandell said. “In the end, probably Heraldic could have gone on forward, but we didn’t need to, so it was nice to ride together the whole way.”

The two frontrunners opened a huge gap early in the day Saturday. Rachel Shackelford kept pace for more than half the ride, but was pulled at Foresthill. No other rider had checked in at Poverty Bar – 12 miles from the finish – when Crandell and Constanti finished.

The searing heat in the canyons slowed many of the riders and the number of horses pulled from the ride soared as Saturday wore on. As of 11 p.m. Saturday, 68 competitors had been removed from the race after their horses were judged unfit to continue down the trail.

Crandell said the unusually high temperatures this year on the East coast, where he lives and trains may have helped his cause Saturday.

His horses’ remarkable achievement wasn’t much a surprise for Crandell. Since 2006, Heraldic has taken first place at all but one 100-mile ride he’s entered.

“(Tevis) is the biggest mark I could go for with the horse,” said Crandell, who won both the Tevis and Haggin Cups in 2006. “At this point we don’t take that horse out for anything but main events. There’s no point in running for a small-time race.”

Constanti has built an impressive endurance-riding resume. She rode her first 55-miler at age 5 under the tutelage of her father Jay, who finished Tevis in 1978 and ’79. Constanti rode Bold Greyson on the recommendation of Linda Glazier and Roger Yohe, whom Crandell was staying with in Georgetown. Constanti finished Tevis for the first time in 2009.

Among the hundreds of riders still on the trail at press time were Barbara White and Hal Hall. White is aiming for her record 30th Tevis Cup buckle. Auburn’s Hall is looking to finish for the 27th time.

WEG 2010: Unveiling of the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games Trophies to Showcase the Bluegrass

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DATE: 7/15/2010

LEXINGTON, KY - 71 Days to Go—The beauty of the horse and the spirit of the Bluegrass will be showcased in the unveiling of the trophies and medals to be presented to the world champions of the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games.

Lexington-based luxury gift store and fine trophy provider, L.V. Harkness & Co., has worked intimately with Moser Crystal of the Czech Republic to create team and individual trophies and medals for each of the eight disciplines participating in the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games.

The 2010 Games will feature eight world championships of equestrian sport and are being held for the first time in the United States September 25-October 10 at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Ky.

The team trophies were designed to showcase each discipline with the true spirit of the Bluegrass; the Kentucky Horse Park skyline and four-plank fencing provide the background for each of the eight trophies. The trophies took over 14 months to create from start to finish and are valued at approximately $50,000 each. These truly magnificent works of art are sure to be admired for years to come.

“The trophies and medals created by L.V. Harkness are not only beautiful, but also showcase Kentucky as the Horse Capital of the World,” said Jamie Link, CEO of the World Games 2010 Foundation. “The world champions crowned during the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games will have a beautiful piece of the Bluegrass State to take home with them.”

“L.V. Harkness & Co. conceptualized the trophies and the Master Copper Wheel Engraver at Moser brought them to life,” said Whitney Fields, Director of Equine Product Development for L.V. Harkness. “We are happy to talk with a client, realize their vision and develop a product that showcases their passion.”

Margaret Jewett, owner of L.V. Harkness & Co. is no stranger to horses or trophies. In 1891, Jewett’s great-grandfather, Lamon Vanderburg Harkness, purchased Walnut Hall Stock Farm near Lexington, Kentucky; he transformed the farm into the foremost standardbred breeding and racing establishment in the world. Jewett is also the co-founder and on the Board of Directors of the Kentucky Equine Humane Center, an organization dedicated to providing humane treatment and shelter for all of Kentucky's unwanted equines. A lifetime surrounded by horses, and experience running the finest gift store in the region, taught Jewett how to partner with talented artisans to produce quality trophies that showcase creative design.

“Lexington is my home,” said Jewett. “The best athletes in the world are coming to Lexington —L.V. Harkness & Co. is proud to provide them with the best trophies in the world.”

7 July 2010

The Tom Quilty Gold Cup National Championship Endurance ride was held in Manilla from the 24th to the 27th of June 2010. Manilla is a small, picturesque town located in North West New South Wales at the junction of the Manilla and Namoi Rivers. The population of around 2200 was doubled during the week of the Quilty.
Around 300 riders, their horses, their support crew and volunteers converged on the Manilla Showground and surrounding areas. Entries were received from New South Wales, Queensland, Tasmania, South Australia, Western Australia as well as New Zealand, the USA, the UK, Namibia and Japan. Rigs and floats of all shapes and sizes set up camp for the week, enjoying some unseasonably warm winter weather.
292 Horse and Riders set off from the Manilla Showground at Midnight on Friday the 25th of June to a full moon and the sound of Trevor Knights Quilty Song. Hundreds of locals gathered with the hundreds of volunteers and strappers to see the horses off and wish them luck. They were treated with the spectacular sight of horses and riders crossing the low-level bridge over the Namoi River with the reflection on the water lit up from the light towers. They then watched the mass of horses flow along the opposite side of the river, with torches shining as they wound their way out into the darkness.
The first and second legs traversed 43km along local gravel roads through farm land before crossing the Manilla River and returning to the Showground along the banks of the river. The first riders completed these two legs in around 4 hours. These legs provided a safe track for the large number of horses travelling in the dark.

WEG organizers lower ticket prices

Kentucky.com - Full Article

Wednesday, Jul. 14, 2010

By Linda B. Blackford - lblackford@herald-leader.com

Organizers of the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games are lowering ticket prices in an attempt to sell more of them.

Starting Thursday, a special promotion will offer a 30 percent savings on tickets to many of the early phases of the competitions. The special offer will run through Labor Day weekend and end on Sept. 6.

The Games will be held from Sept. 25-Oct. 10 at the Kentucky Horse Park.

So far, about 260,000 tickets have been sold, far below the once-anticipated 600,000. Organizers have said the economy is mostly to blame for more people not buying tickets priced over $100 for some events. Tickets to many event finals have been selling well, officials said.

China: Bayanbulak Swan Lake Equestrian Endurance Race Held in Xinjiang

Big5.cri.cn - Full Article

12 July 2010

The second Bayanbulak Swan Lake Equestrian Endurance Race was held Saturday at the Bayanbulak Grassland in Xinjiang's Bayingol Mongolian Autonomous Prefecture. Horse riders from different areas in and outside China have taken part in the race. Adopting the international rules for the first time, this race pays more attention to the welfare of the horses. Zhao Jianfu has the details.

Reporter:
More than 100 horsemen from all over China including Hong Kong, Taiwan, Beijing, Xinjiang and other provinces as well as from Singapore have competed in the Bayanbulak Swan Lake Equestrian Endurance Race.

Xu Jingling, a rider from Singapore, tells us his feelings about the race.

"I took part in a similar endurance race last year in Inner Mongolia, that was more for experience. This time I'm trying to do better, but mostly is for fun. I think it's a good idea to adopt the international standards, because one of the main principles of the international standards is the condition and welfare of the horse, so I think it's very important they take the approach."

Although it's the second endurance race held in the area, it is the first time the standards of the Federation Equestre Internationale, or FEI, has been adopted in Xinjiang, and the second such race with international rules in China following the event which took place last year in Inner Mongolia. The whole 80 kilometer race is separated into four stages, and the condition of the horses is tested between them. The horses take breaks between the stages so as to guarantee they won't get hurt. If the physical condition of a horse does not meet the standards, it will not continue the race.

Man Zhenwei, chief judge of the endurance race, talks about the importance of adopting the international rules of equestrian endurance racing in China...

Three Namibian girls gain qualifications to ride for the Namibian Endurance team on US horses at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games. “It’s an awesome feeling,” said 19 year old, Anna Wucher. “We're happy to finally get to say we're going to the WEG and not if, when, and maybe! We are all very excited and hope we do well there, too!”
The three girls have been working and training at Darolyn Butler’s Cypress Trails Ranch in South Texas near Houston. Kordula Voigts, 24, was the first to arrive. “Dulie is an excellent rider, but had no previous endurance experience before she started riding with me in April of 2008,” said Butler. “She's a brilliant horsewoman and perhaps the most compassionate, yet effective trainer I've ever known. She's turned three different, almost man-eater horses completely around. Duli is also unbelievable help in organizing the training schedule, the packing up on the trips and generally very pleasant to be around. The other ladies have only been here four months, but they are equally as nice and I'm growing to love these ‘lil gals too.”

“I grew up on a stud farm for warmbloods used for jumping and dressage,” said Kordula, aka Duli...

ONCE again Queensland endurance rider Brook Sample stamped his amazing ability by winning the famous Tom Quilty Endurance Ride for a fifth time.

He did this late last month, riding Brookleigh Excalibur, in eight hours and 35 minutes.

Brook's previous wins were in 1990, 1995, 2002 and last year.

Held in Manilla, NSW, the event attracted 292 riders, who began the ride from the Manilla showgrounds at midnight for the 160km famous journey.

The first and second legs covered 43km, mainly over easy-going gravel roads and open paddocks with creek and river crossings.

Horses then left that track and rode north and returned to the ride base before making the final 32km loop through hills to the finish line.

First across the line was David Anderson Jnr, riding Ashwind, in eight hours, 30 minutes and 25 seconds. Juniors and lightweight riders can't win the overall class but it was a remarkable effort.

Brook Sample was next in 8.35, to take out the national champion and the Tom Quilty.

Brodie Freeman took out the heavyweight title, in nine hours.

Sasha Laws King won the lightweight section on Tubbarubba Cheval in a time of 10 hours and 11 seconds.

Short-listed riders for the World Equestrian Games endurance championships are Brook Sample, Brookleigh Ricardo and Tarrangower Crecendo, Penny Toft with Don and Norbert Radny, riding West Coast Archaron.

WEG Regional U.S. Endurance Team Selection Trials Held

article at http://www.thehorse.com/ViewArticle.aspx?ID=16594
by: Marsha Hayes
July 05 2010, Article # 16594

The quality and depth of the horses and riders vying for the five coveted spots on the United States endurance team for the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrain Games were made apparent after three regional selection trials held June 20-28. "We identified some very good horses," noted Chef d'Equipe Becky Hart, three-time World Endurance Champion.

The trials, held in Fairhill, Md., Danville, Ill., and Prineville, Ore., were all attended by the five selectors, a three-member veterinary panel, Hart, and Vonita Bowers, Director of Endurance and Reining Activities for the United States Equestrian Federation. The selection team is looking for horses capable of covering 100 miles in around eight hours, or less.

In her role as team leader, coach, and trainer, Hart has been studying workout logs and heart rate monitor printouts of the 50-60 candidate horses to help her organize them into compatible groups before sending them on loops of various lengths and speeds. The veterinary panel members Jim Bryant Jr., DVM, Dipl. ACVS; Todd Holbrook, DVM, Dipl. ACVIM; and Duncan Peters, DVM, monitored the horses' soundness, hydration, and recovery times.

"Having a research interest in exercise physiology, I found the trials especially intriguing," said Holbrook. He is working on a future study on watering horses in extreme heat Fascinated by the different environmental factors found at the three locations, he is currently analyzing lab work on the horses. The heat indexes varied greatly between the Oregon and Illinois sites, with Maryland falling in the middle. Weather and the ability to manage horses under specific conditions could play a critical role in the event, scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 26 on the rolling hills of Lexington, Ky.

Unlike some countries with larger, more centralized endurance teams that train together, the USA hopefuls are scattered from coast to coast. The final trial to be held in Danville, Ill., Aug. 10 will bring together some of the best 100 mile equine athletes, to not only access individuals, but to see how they perform together since a team medal is an important USA goal, as well as an individual medal.

Following that trial, 10-12 horse and rider pairs will move to Kentucky for more training. On Sept. 21, five horses and five riders, and one alternate horse, will be chosen to compete for the United States in the 2010 WEG games.

News from the Canadian Nationals - Endurancecanada.ca

We don’t have many results, but here’s what we know so far (Thank you, Kim and Maura!):

Think there were about 70 riders overall in all divisions. The 50 was won by Valerie Kanavy, second place Elaine Steele, 3rd Lynda Byrne. Team Ontario finished two teams in the 50, Team Quebec did not finish a team, but had three riders complete. Manitoba finished all 3 riders - congratulations Prue, Aime and Jessica!

Bob Gielen won the 75 - now he can sit back, relax and celebrate his birthday! Congratulations, Bob, and Happy Day! There were 9 entered in the FEI 75. Haven’t heard many 100 mile results yet, but know that Gail Jewell, Carol Steiner, Yvette Vinton, Tom Paleczny finished - sorry, don’t know anything else.

One foreign rider came off quite hard - she is from Namibia and was riding one of Darolyn Butler’s horses. Horse vetted through, but the rider did not and was sent to hospital to be checked for neck injury.

The day has been absolutely glorious... clear skies, low humidity, temps around 18C. The trail is excellent. Esau and his crew put on a fabulous event. How will anyone ever top this location (the Girl Guide Camp near New Lowell). Real showers and toilets and so much space!!!

More as soon as we know...

More News from the Canadian Nationals

Race day was going very well, temp was perfect, humidity down, but results at vet stops were telling a different story.

40 started the 100, only 19 finished, in the FEI International competition 24 starters, had only 9 finish. Mostly lame but one Metabolic that sadly turned into a fatality at the Guelph clinic shortly after midnite.

Apache and Jolly Holliday pulled at 87.5 miles and that closed the opportunity for Weg for J. H. A muscle cramp the culprit, Apache was lame, both are sound this AM. Diamond Reo and Gail finished with mission accomplished in 9 th overall and 2nd in those qualified as entry into the Canadian National Championship. So she has a silver medal as well as a black eye a gift from Reo in a little trail encounter. Reo finished in good time and is now qualified to go to Weg as an alternate with Gail. So we move to plans for Weg.

Auburn, California - Endurance Capital of the World

Placercountyca.wordpress.com - Full Article

Posted on July 2, 2010 by placercountyca

Since 2003, Auburn in California has held the title of “Endurance Capital of the World”. This is because Auburn’s picture-esque landscape translates into one of the world’s toughest triathlon competitions. Auburn is situated near the Sierra Nevada mountain range and the Tahoe national park. This provides spectacular terrain ranging from rivers and lakes to hills and mountains, perfect for a this kind of competition. In case you are unfamiliar with a triathlon, it is a long distance multi-sport race that consists of swimming, cycling and running. It can vary in length and has variations with only two of the sports included. The most famous variation is the Ironman competition, which covers an unbelievable 4km of swimming, 180km bike ride and a 42km run...

The Tevis Cup

This exciting endurance race has been held annually since 1955 and is competed on horseback. The course is a staggering 100 miles, has a 24-hour time limit and covers the diverse Sierra mountain trails...

Anne-Louise Brown | 3rd July 2010

photo by Geoff Potterna - HORSEMAN: David Anderson, 12, from Belli, and his horse Ashwind were first across the line in the 160km Tom Quilty Gold Cup.
WHEN David Anderson was a little boy he struggled to fit in because he was tongue-tied and mildly deaf.

But his parents had a plan. To give their little boy a confidence boost they put him on a horse.

David, now 12, has never looked back.

Last week the Cooroy State School student and his mare, Ashwind, were first across the line in Australia’s most prestigious equestrian marathon, the 160km Tom Quilty Gold Cup, held this year at Manilla in New South Wales. They completed the course in just over eight hours.

“When Ashwind and I ride together we know what the other is thinking. She’s an amazing horse,” David said.

“It was so exciting to get across the line first because I’ve been wanting to do the Tom Quilty for years, but you have to be 12 to compete.”

David said he had been inspired to get serious about riding after watching his big sister, Terri, compete.

“When I watched her I used to get so excited and soon I was totally addicted to horse riding,” he said.

“My aim is to be a vet that specialises in horses or a farrier. I want to live in Dubai where endurance horse racing started and work for a sheik.”

David’s mum, Sharon Cogbill, said her son was determined and focused on attaining his goals.

She said many people did not realise he was only 12.

“The only thing that gives it away is his size, because when David speaks about riding he’s so grown up,” Ms Cogbill said.

“He took to riding really naturally and was riding by himself at the age of five.

“David competed in his first endurance event when he was eight and by the age of nine was winning 320km races.”

Ironically, David almost missed out on competing in the Tom Quilty.

His father suffers heart problems and had to stop work and, to get David there, the family had to sell one of its 14 horses.

“There was no way we could let David miss out on it. Doing the Tom Quilty has been his dream for so long,” Ms Cogbill said.

“David’s career as a horseman is just starting, but I have no doubt he’s going to be a success.”

World Equestrian Games Preview

Excitement mounts for the biggest-ever equestrian competition on U.S. soil.

Think of the biggest sporting events in the United States, and which ones come to mind? The Super Bowl, of course. The Kentucky Derby. A handful of mega-competitions, such as the two-week-long tennis U.S. Open. Two months from now, for the first time in history, the United States will host a 16-day sporting extravaganza that will approach the U.S. Open (which drew 700,000-plus spectators in 2009) in attendance size. It will command more than six hours of network television airtime, and it will bring together athletes from 60 nations.

It's the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games (WEG), and the eight-discipline equestrian world championships kick off Sept. 25 on the pastoral grounds of the Kentucky Horse Park, near Lexington.

The World Games 2010 Foundation, the Lexington-based organizer, anticipates selling 600,000 reserved tickets. The Commonwealth of Kentucky has been building arenas and stabling, expanding infrastructure, widening roads, and more since 2005, when the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI), the international governing body of equestrian sport, awarded the 2010 WEG to Lexington. In return, Kentucky hopes to realize the projected $150-plus-million influx of visitor dollars...

Belgium: 2010 Arville

Belgium: 2010 Arville

June 27 2010

The first 80 km National endurance ride took place at Arville, Belgium, at the same time as a 3-day event international.

Organized by international endurance rider Leonard Liesens, it attracted 66 starters.

Riders were very fortunate to compete in this wonderful venue, a park with grassland and forest of some 2000 hectares, a 17th century castle, Chateau d'Arville, with a village of gourmet food, belgian beers and many tackstores and others. Several attractions were at the venue, such as tree climbing, draft horses work performance, and carriage promenades.

"Finally the 'cohabitation'  with the international 3-days event was a success. Endurance made a good display, just beside the showjumping field," Liesens said. The ride was very technical, many ups and downs. "On the 30km loop they climbed for 900 meters. So in total on the 80km, 900x2+400= 2200 meters elevation difference. It was very warm - 34*C at the hottest part of the day - but no horse has been put at risk, none have been treated, no real metabolic elimination. The completion rate was very good - 70%. BRAVO to riders who as true 'horsemen' run their horses in these extreme conditions."

Following the style of Steph Teeter, who organizes endurance rides in Idaho, USA, Liesens marked trails by ribbons, and had prizes for many different categories: Turtle prizes for each category (the new endurance book of Leonard Liesens - "Le Livre d'un Cavalier Pour les Cavaliers"), Poulidor prizes (Poulidor is the traditional second of the Tour de France, he was second behind Anquetil then Merckx for many years), nicest couple horse/rider, nicest tack, fair-play prize, best horse showing in front of the vets, etc.

"We plan a CEI* for next year hoping to attract some French riders from the North," Liesens said. Perhaps some foreigners from overseas will also join the riders for this unique and beautiful ride.

New Zealand: Star endurance team ready to tackle financial hurdles

Times-age.co.nz - Full Article

Gary Caffell | 30th June 2010

Ace Masterton endurance rider Jenny Champion has a mountain to climb before she can represent New Zealand at the World Equestrian Games to be held in Kentucky in the United States from September 25 to October 10.

Champion needs $50,000 to enable both herself and her star charge, Freckles, to make the return trip and she has just over two months to meet that financial commitment.
Not surprisingly then, Champion's immediate focus is on bringing her mightily impressive CV up to date so she can present it to the various organisations and business houses from which sponsorship could possibly be obtained.

And she is also planning how any sponsors coming on board can be rewarded for their generosity, like having their names or logos embossed on a rug which will be worn by Freckles or painted on to the truck which usually transports the classy 15-year-old mare...
