There was a movie this year, Hidalgo, which told the story of a man and his horse competing in the centuries-old long-distance horse race, the Ocean of Fire, an epic contest across burning Arabian sands in 1890 with both horses and riders at risk. This was a 3000-mile survival race for a prize of riches.

Now cut to present-day Owhango, near Taumaranui, a 20-year-old farmer, Mark Tylee, and his horse Jamahl. Like Hidalgo's supposed true-life hero, Frank T. Hopkins (played by Viggo Mortensen of The Lord of the Rings fame), Tylee is an accomplished rider.

He speaks with the simplicity and sincerity of a New Zealand farmer - not unlike the "howdy all, don't hurt my horse" style of the iron-jawed Hopkins in the movie. And Tylee and Jamahl will take on the world's best as part of a New Zealand endurance riding team in a gruelling world championship in the heat of the United Arab Emirates deserts on January 27.

Ovando horse, rider suffer setback while training in Florida

Ovando rancher Suzanne Hayes and Quincy, her palomino gelding, have had a setback while training in Florida for the World Endurance Championship horse race scheduled for Jan. 27 in Dubai of the United Arab Emirates.

Hayes and Quincy - whose official name is actually Tezero's Gold - traveled to Florida in late November as part of the nine horse/rider United States team training for the grueling 100-mile race in the Dubai desert.

Six of the teams will be selected to represent the United States in the race. Three teams will be alternates. Hayes and Quincy went into training in Florida ranked among the top six horse/rider tandems.

If it hadn't been for falling in love with Ronald Sproat, the man who would become her husband, Carol Giles wouldn't have met Stranger, a bay Arabian gelding.

If it hadn't been for Giles' lifelong love of horses, Stranger might have ended up at the slaughterhouse.

And if it hadn't been for the healing love she showered on Stranger, the Prineville duo might not be headed next month to Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates.

Giles, 48, and Stranger, 12, leave Jan. 15 for Dubai, where they'll compete as members of the United States Endurance Equestrian Team in the 100-mile World Cup Endurance Championships, to be held Jan. 26-27.

FEI WORLD ENDURANCE CHAMPIONSHIP, DUBAI (UAE), 26 ? 27 JANUARY 2005

The Organising Committee of the World Endurance Championships, which are
taking place next month in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, have confirmed
that they have received definite entries for 188 horses from 41 nations.

The horses are all due to start arriving in Dubai around 8 January allowing
them time to acclimatise ahead of the competition which takes place on 26
and 27 January 2005.

At the final trial, which took place in Dubai last weekend held at the state
of the art purpose built ? complete with a five-star hotel ? Dubai Endurance
Village, the Organising Committee and the FEI confirmed that everything had
worked perfectly.

The Village now looks forward to welcoming the expected 800 riders, crew
members, team vets, team farriers, team doctors, horse owners and officials
who will take part in what is likely to be the biggest Equestrian World
Championship ever.

Full details of the riders and horses taking part will be published on the
FEI web site in early January after the Christmas and New Year holidays.

Media representative wishing to cover the event, should get in touch with
the respective National Federations, which all the relevant information for
the press has been sent to.

Riders from 13 states 'endure' Shaker Village

PLEASANT HILL - More than 50 riders and horses came from 13 states as far north as New York and as far south as Georgia to compete Saturday in the first-ever endurance competition at Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill.

Twenty-seven riders were entered in the 25-mile ride and 25 riders in the 50-mile ride that traversed 2,900 acres of Shaker Village's rolling land.

The event was the brainchild of Jim Rogan, a Boyle County attorney, who has been a competitive endurance rider since 1984. The scenic and challenging terrain coupled with the hospitable assets of Shaker Village's comfortable rooms, good food and secure stabling led Rogan to believe that the ride and site would draw competitors. Working with Shakertown naturalist, Don Pelly, Rogan worked for 18 months in planning the event.

Sulaiman claims endurance race

Sulaiman claims endurance race
FAHAD Sulaiman of Al Asayel Stable clinched the Bahrain Trial Endurance Horse Race for the World Juniors Championship, organised by Bahrain Royal Equestrian and Endurance Federation (Breef) yesterday at the Bahrain Endurance Village premises in Sakhir.

Competing among 40 riders in the race which was sponsored by Batelco, Sulaiman completed the 120 kms distance in five hours, 42 minutes and 27 seconds riding Mac Drac.

In second place was Mohammed Abdulsamad (5:43:42) of the Royal Team on Naima El Fayssetts, while Raed Abu Samad (6:10:32) of the Royal Team came third on Freelance Akdanitti.

The race also featured riders from abroad, including Australia's Anna Williams and Suzanne Perry of Ireland who came eighth and ninth, respectively.

WEC: Belgium selects squad for Dubai

Belgium presents a very good team for Dubai: Orfeo is a very experienced and talented multi winner and TopTen on two championships; Fidji was 5th at the Eur. chamionships at Punchestown; Shannon was impressive when winning the belgian championship this year; Kouros completed in the top ten (7th) at the recent CEIO of La Baule in France; Takhar took a nice 2nd place at the 160kms of Kreuth in Germany; finally Allel is the only horse of the selection to have entered and completed two 160kms this season.

WEC: Bahrian Qualifies Riders

Three riders seal spot for top race

SHAIKH Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Khalid Al Rowaie and Ahmed Al Rowaie qualified for the World Endurance Horseride Championship after completing yesterday's 160-km race at the Endurance Village in Sakhir.The three riders were successful in finishing their third race over 160 kms which secured them a spot in the world event scheduled next month in the UAE.

The event was keenly followed by Breef president Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, endurance committee chairman Shaikh Faisal bin Rashid Al Khalifa and Royal Endurance Team manager Faisal bin Hassan Al Ajmi who congratulated the three riders who qualified for the World Championship.

The event was held over two days and each day consisted of 80 kms divided into three stages, including 30 kms for the first two stages and a 20-km final stage.

The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) has submitted a 12-member Nominated Entry List to the 2004 WEC Organizing Committee (OC). This is the initial entry list, composed of 12 members of the 15-member US National Team, the maximum number of Nominated Entries permitted by the OC.

Additional National Team members, not on the Nominated Entry list, includes Valerie Kanavy, Crockett Dumas, and Sue White-Hedgecock. In addition to the 2004 WEC, the National Team members will have priority consideration when USEF submits entries for the Pan American Championship in Argentina, and the European Championship in Great Britain.

On December 16 the USEF will submit a Definite Entry List of 6 riders and horses to the WEC OC. At this point the remaining 6 will be considered alternates, and available for substitution prior to shipping horses on January 15. The USEF hopes to ship 3 alternates to Dubai along with the 6 member squad, for on-site substitution if necessary.

Art Priesz, Jr (WEC Team Chef d'Equip) informs that the National Team is currently in Florida under the supervision of Mary Lutz (USEF) and Nancy Loving, DVM (Team veterinarian) for training and coaching in preparation for the WEC. Drs. Jeannie Waldron and Bob Beecher (Team veterinarians) will arrive in Florida on 04 December. Ann Stewart (Assistant Chef d'Equipe) and Julie Bullock, DVM arrive 10 December.

Initially upon arrival, the riders have been hand-walking their horses and will eventuall resume light work under saddle.

The Team Riding Instructor/Counselor, Daniel Stewart, arrives on 06 December and will work individually and in groups with the riders on bio-mechanic reminders, balance, stretching and sports psychology. He will be doing some video-tape critiques and reviews with the riders. His work will run through 08 December and will be a great lead-in to Donna Snyder-Smith's Endurance Riding Instruction on 09-11 December. The Team will have adequate opportunity to work their Equine Partners under saddle in front of and with the Staff, both in the ring and on trail.

Much of the training session in Florida will be spent addressing pace, rating and Team-Riding. This is a continuation of the Team sessions conducted in the 2004 season Training and Demo rides. Art Priesz will be arriving in Florida on December 7, and emphasizes that the USEF is dedicated to the WEC Team process, "We are looking for the best Team to compete in Dubai."

On 13 December, the USEF staff will conduct a longer Breeze to push the Team as a group, and appraise the soundness and condition of the horses. The remainder of December will be a cool down out of that Breeze. After the Holidays, they will start bringing the Horses back up to travel and peak for late January.

USEF expects to van the horses to Gladstone in mid-January, rest for 30 hours and then ship from JFK for a direct flight to Dubai on the 15th. Horses and Team/Staff/Crew arrive in Dubai on January 17th, local time. Art Priesz will fly to Dubai December 28th, in order to have adequate time to make preparations for the arrival of the US Squad, and to work with the WEC OC and other Federations to ensure a successful Championship venue.
