Gabriela von Felten is Building an Endurance Legacy

FEI.org - Full Story

12 April 2023

We speak to the Swiss athlete...

The 80-hectares of Cavallon Farm in Bougnon, France is nestled on a gently sloping landscape, surrounded by large fields lined with trees where the horses are peacefully grazing. This is home for Gabriela von Felten, an Endurance rider representing Switzerland.

She finished the 2022 season ranked 35th in the world standings and recently returned from the Al Ula 120km Endurance competition in Saudi Arabia where she competed with Mirko du Cavallon.

“The race in Al Ula was mind blowing,” Von Felten said. “The beauty and the wildness of the desert is one of the most amazing I’ve seen. The course was very hard, more like a European race, because it was not flat at all and had a lot of deep sand."

She is eyeing the European Championships for Seniors in September and another strong showing there...

Liz Finney, the international endurance rider, former chair of the British Endurance Riding Association (BERA) and long-time chef d’equipe of the British endurance team, died on 19 March from pancreatic cancer. She was 77.

Liz Finney (née Eatough) grew up in Burnley, Lancashire, and began riding at a very early age with her mother, who was equally passionate about horses. After attending Bradford University to study pharmaceuticals, Liz began working at ICI (now AstraZeneca), in Alderley Edge, Cheshire, where she met her future husband, Peter. They were married for 54 years and he was by her side when she died.

Endurance Team Gold Medalist from Bahrain Tests Positive for Banned Steroid

HorseSport.com - Full Article

France set to become the next world champions if Bahrain’s stanozolol offence is confirmed, after last month’s title race in the UAE.

By: Pippa Cuckson | March 22, 2023

Bahrain appears set to lose its World Endurance Championships team gold medal to France, following a steroids positive by its 18th placed rider.

Hera Durances, ridden by Abdulrahman Mohammed Alzayed, tested positive to the banned anabolic steroid stanozolol and its metabolite 16-beta-hydroxystanozolol, following sampling during the championship last month at Butheeb in the UAE.

A positive from one horse does not automatically result in disqualification of the whole team at a FEI world championship. However, only three of Bahrain’s five riders completed so it has no drop scores to reinstate and can no longer deliver a result.

The rider and the horse’s trainer Muhammad Abbas Khalid have been provisionally suspended from March 20...

Custodian of Two Holy Mosques Endurance Cup 2023 proves AlUla’s credentials as world-class equestrian destination

Plans for a new cutting-edge permanent equestrian location confirmed post event
Activities build on area’s rich heritage, improving infrastructure and developing local capabilities

AlUla, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia – March 20, 2023:

The successful staging of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Endurance Cup, the fourth edition of Saudi Arabia’s flagship endurance race, is further evidence of AlUla’s capabilities as a world-class destination for international sporting events.

The 120km event was part of the Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU)’s wider equine strategy to further develop AlUla as a world-class equestrian destination which offers activities for all levels, and also builds on local capabilities and engagement with equestrian activities.

Following the event, the RCU will further develop the facilities at Fursan Village, an interim equestrian venue, ahead of the completion of the new AlMuatadil Equestrian Village, a 285-hectare dedicate equestrian area.

The Fursan Village location will be activated as a semi-permanent location with facilities including 60 climate-controlled stables with wash bays, horse walkers, lunge pens, polo arena, vet clinic, forge, warehouse, and staff accommodation for 24-hour care of horses on site.

AlMuatadil will include two arenas as well as grass polo, sand polo and endurance venues plus stable compounds and an all-weather training barn that will include Seawalker pools, treadmills and vibration plate. The village will also offer accommodation facilities for event participants and workers.

Plans are also in place for an Equine Veterinary Hospital to serve AlUla and the region, and further increase standards of welfare and care.
