Al Marri rides to victory as five-day extravaganza concludes
UAE riders continued their splendid performance with Ghanim Al Marri easing his horse Ro Al Lisain to a convincing win in the 100-km Shaikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan Endurance Festival Cup on the final day of the Shaikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Horse Flat Racing Festival’s five day extravaganza came at the King’s Forest in Tetford, UK on Sunday.
While Al Marri topped the pack of riders competing in the Purebred Arabian endurance horses’ category, the Spanish duo of Alejandro Dachs Izquierdo and Nuria Serrabassa Fabre made it a 1-2 in the category for Purebred Arabian horses that have earlier in their careers races in flat races.
Alejandro on Zen Al Maury and Nuria on Tidjari, two flat-race horses now in endurance, did very well to win the 100-km One Star which was run in four stages of 32kms, 32kms, 20kms and 16kms.
“All three of us in fact did an extra 12kms as we got lost in the forest,” said the 26 year old Alejandro. The winner of the 120-km Catalunya Championship in Barcelona last year, Alejandro is keen to fight and get a place in the strong Spanish national team...

Emaciated Endurance Horse in France Ran 46 Miles Before Pulled by Vets
Guardianlv.com - Full Article
Added by Alana Marie Burke on May 30, 2014.
The International Equestrian Federation (FEI) recently cleared a severely emaciated horse, “Shakla’s Sudden Impact” from Bahrain to compete in a lengthy, exceedingly strenuous endurance race. The Festival Mondial d’Endurance in Compiègne, France is a 100-mile race that serves as a qualifying event for the World Equestrian Games coming up in July of this year in Normandy, France. The FEI also serves to clear horses for that major equestrian event. Disturbing photos taken of the clearly emaciated horse before the start of the endurance race surfaced and welfare groups have expressed their outrage at the IEF. Despite the obvious health concerns evidenced by the abnormally lean body composition of the horse, Shakla was cleared for competition and it was not until the horse had run 46 miles that veterinarians made the decision to pull it from the race...

Great Britain: Chairman resigns from Endurance GB
Horseandhound.co.uk - Full Article
29 May 2014
Endurance GB (EGB) has suffered its 2nd high-profile departure in 7 months with Karen Collier’s resignation as chairman.
The announcement came just days after H&H revealed the British Equestrian Federation (BEF) was negotiating with Saeed Al Tayer, chief executive of Sheikh Mohammed’s Meydan corporation, about its renewed investment in the UK, prior to having demonstrated improvements in the conduct of the Middle Eastern sport that provoked last year’s scandals.
EGB did not participate in the initial discussions but was aware of them. Its spokesman declined to comment on whether the chairman’s decision was connected with this, and said: “Karen Collier has decided for a number of personal reasons that she is unable to continue and is leaving the Board.”

France: Thin endurance horse passed fit to race ‘horrifies’ riders
Horseandhound.co.uk - Full Article30 May 2014
Horse sport’s governing body has defended the inclusion of an exceptionally thin horse in the 160CEI at Compiègne, France, last week (23 May).
A photograph of the horse — described as “disturbing” by a leading equine welfare charity — was widely circulated on social media.
The FEI has not confirmed the horse’s identity, but it is understood to represent one of the Middle Eastern teams based in Europe for the summer.
The main outcry centred on a Facebook group for endurance specialists, who are familiar with the sport’s tough demands, but were “horrified” and “ashamed” by the horse’s appearance at the initial inspection.
