South Africa: Endurance horse fetches highest price at CdP auction

AfricanFarming.com - Full Article

A registered 14-year-old Arabian mare, Silvretta Neen, a proven endurance horse from some of the best Arabian breeding lines of the past five decades, fetched the highest price of R55 000 at auctioneer CdP Auctioneers’ open horse and chicken auction on 21 February 2026. The auction is held bimonthly at the Ditsong Willem Prinsloo Agricultural Museum near Pretoria.

Her breeder, Dr Hercu van Niekerk of the Silvretta Stud on the farm Kililene near Modimolle, says he has since stopped breeding and now has only one horse left that the family still uses for endurance rides.

The online buyer was Xander Human from Riversdale, who plans to use Silvretta Neen’s genetics in his breeding programme. Human also paid R20 000 for the 20-year-old mare Silvretta Beate, who will likewise be used for breeding purposes.

Van Niekerk is a South African pioneer in the field of veterinary medicine in endurance riding and has achieved four-star veterinarian status with the Fédération Équestre Internationale (FEI). In 2018, he was honoured for 50 years of service as a practising veterinarian and still serves as a consultant...

UAE: MRM Stables dominant in Dubai Crown Prince Endurance Cup

www.endurance.net/international/UAE/2026CrownPrinceofDubaiEnduranceFestival

April 1 2026

MRM Stables lifted the Dubai Crown Prince Endurance Cup at Dubai International Endurance City in Seeh Al Salam on Wednesday after Abdulla Abdulrahman Al Bastaki sealed the fate of the showpiece event of the Dubai Crown Prince Endurance Festival just past the half-way stage of the competition.

Riding Bullio Charles, Al Bastaki turned up the heat during the third and penultimate phase of the 120 km ride and took over the summit, thereafter doing just enough to ensure a simple but commanding 29 second victory.

The Dubai Crown Prince Endurance Cup brought the curtains down on the annual Festival of endurance riding held in honour of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of the United Arab Emirates, Crown Prince of Dubai, and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai.

Al Bastaki began the day placed 23rd, but knew there was no reason to fret even though Fatma Jassem Al Marri, winner of the Private Stables Competition the day before, seized the initiative at the end of the first phase spanning 40 km when riding the Al Bawadi Stables-owned Dja De Beders.

Al Marri failed to hold on to the lead during the course of the second loop over 35 kms and dropped one spot leaving Mohammed Rashed Mugheer on M7 Endurance Stables’ Zeus FF in command.

Al Bastaki had moved up to 15th during the second loop and decided to push hard during the third phase over 25 km, a manoeuvre that yielded fruit immediately with the MRM Stables rider finding himself in command of the competition.

Maintaining the lead was going to be tricky, but both Al Bastaki and Bullio Charles were up to it and ensured nothing came in between them and a well-deserved success as they finished with 29 seconds to spare having scripted a time of four hours 23 minutes and 28 seconds (4:23:28).

Finishing second with a time of 4:23:57 was F3 Stables’ French lady rider Lea Vandekerckhove on A’Bandom’s Moonshadow, even as the UAE’s Mohamed Adel Al Hosani took third for Al Reef Ajban II Stables aboard SC Bonito with 4:24:16 on the clock.

Sheikh Rashed bin Dalmook Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Equestrian Club, Ahmed Rashid Al Kaabi, General Manager of Dubai Equestrian Club, and Ahmad Saeed Al Falasi, Director of Joint Ventures and Strategic Relations, were present at the trophy presentation ceremony.

The Dubai Crown Prince Endurance Festival comprised four rides and began on 23 March with the 120 km Ladies Ride won by ABH Stables’ Sara Hasan Ahmed on Wayward. The festival resumed after a bout of inclement weather with the Al Yamamah Cup for Mares on 30 March, an event won narrowly by M7 Endurance Stables after Hamdan Ahmad Al Mansoori’s success in the saddle aboard SW Jashfiya AA 50. The third event on the Festival’s schedule was the Private Stables Ride held on 31 March, where riding with absolute consistency Fatma Jassem Al Marri claimed a facile victory for SM Private Stables on the back of Celebryta.

Great Britain: Jo Chisholm Appointed England Chef d’Equipe Ahead of 2026 Home International

March 31 2026

Endurance GB has announced the appointment of Jo Chisholm as Chef d’Equipe for the England Squad ahead of the 2026 Home International, which will take place in Scotland on 5–6th September.

With a lifelong involvement in endurance riding spanning more than four decades, Chisholm brings extensive competitive and team experience to the role. Having started in the sport in 1989, she has amassed over 17,000km of competition mileage and completed eight 160km rides, alongside representing England as a rider at Home International level.

“I am very honoured to be appointed HI Chef,” said Chisholm. “This gives me another opportunity to give more back to the sport I love using all my experiences, and I hope to do my country and team proud.”

Chisholm is perhaps best known for her long-standing partnership with Grey Medlar, with whom she achieved multiple top results, including success at the Golden Horseshoe Ride and a BERA National Championship title in 2002.

Reflecting on her experience at the highest levels of the sport, she added: “Endurance riding involves the combination of athleticism and the ability to manage your pace over varying terrain and distances, whilst keeping your horse’s welfare as your top priority.”

In addition to her competitive career, Chisholm has previously held team management roles, including working with Young Riders and supporting squad leadership. Her appointment as Chef d’Equipe marks a return to a key leadership position within the England set-up.

“I wanted to make sure I could give 100% to the role,” she explained. “I’m looking forward to working with members of the England Squad—both familiar faces and new combinations—and supporting them to achieve their goals.”

The Home International is an annual fixture in the endurance calendar, bringing together teams from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Combining competition with a strong sense of camaraderie, it is widely recognised as a key development opportunity for riders progressing through the sport.

Chisholm believes the event plays an important role in building both performance and team culture.

“Team spirit is very important in endurance,” she said. “When the going gets tough, the team will rally behind a rider and provide the motivation needed to finish. That sense of support is invaluable.”

Looking ahead to the 2026 event, Chisholm’s focus is on creating a cohesive and supportive team environment.

“My priority is to get the best out of all our team members and to support each other with a real feeling of cooperation and encouragement,” she said. “A successful Home International is one where every rider achieves their aims to the best of their ability, alongside their horse.”

She also highlighted the accessibility of the Home International format, which enables riders at a range of levels to represent their country.

“Even our Elite riders started somewhere,” she said. “The Home International allows riders to experience being part of a squad and take that next step in their endurance journey.”

Chisholm’s appointment comes as Endurance GB continues to strengthen its pathway for riders, with the Home International serving as a stepping stone towards future international competition.

Encouraging riders to put themselves forward for selection, she added: “Go for it—you will receive support from the squad management to help you take that next step.”

Great Britain: ‘Unlikely’ Cob Secures Runner-Up Spot in Competitive Finish at Haywood Oaks

March 29 2026

An eye-catching performance from an unconventional partnership saw Jennifer Gaimster and her 14.1hh piebald cob, Striker, take second place in the 80km CER at the Haywood Oaks Endurance Ride on 28th March 2026.

Representing the West Riding Group of Endurance GB, the pair completed the course in 6 hours at an average speed of 13.3kph, delivering a confident and competitive ride capped off with a thrilling racing finish.

Striker, a 2014-born gelding with no recorded breeding, is not the typical profile of a high-level endurance horse – making the result all the more notable. The partnership only began their endurance career together in 2023 but have shown consistent progression through the ranks.

During the 2025 season, they recorded a third place at Avon Valley (62km CER), a fourth at Cirencester (80km CER at the Inter-Regional Championships), and an 11th place finish at the Red Dragon Festival of Endurance (80km CER). At Haywood Oaks, they stepped up again to secure their highest placing to date.

“Haywood Oaks was our first ‘race ride’ of the season and what a day it turned out to be,” said Jennifer. “Striker was calm and focused from the start, and we found a great rhythm early on.”

The pair rode in company with Iola Chapman, eventual winner, for the duration of the course, maintaining a steady pace across varied conditions, including sunshine, strong winds and hail. As the finish line came into sight, the competitive nature of the class came to the fore.

“We’d ridden together for the whole 80km, but when we turned for home, it was time to race. It was our first racing finish – I asked him to go, and he did. To feel that energy still there after 80km was incredible.”

As always in endurance, the result hinged on the final veterinary inspection. Having vetted out at the same venue the previous year, Jennifer admitted to feeling the pressure.

“There were definitely some nerves going into the final trot-up. But this is what the sport is about – the vets are there to ensure the horse’s welfare comes first.”

Striker passed with a heart rate of 50bpm and was awarded an ‘A’ for action, confirming an excellent recovery and securing their second-place finish.

“The relief was huge. I burst into tears – he’d done everything I could have asked of him.” Jennifer was quick to acknowledge the support behind the scenes, including organisers, volunteers and her crew, highlighting the collective effort that underpins success in the sport.

With a strong start to the 2026 season, this partnership continues to demonstrate that performance in endurance is not defined by breeding alone, but by careful training, horsemanship, and the strength of the horse-and-rider partnership.

Consistency key to a stunning win for Al Marri and SM Private Stables

Consistency in sport is pivotal and Fatma Jassem Al Marri turned up a shining example of it when ensuring a facile victory for SM Private Stables in the Dubai Crown Prince Endurance Festival’s Private Stables competition.

The 120 km event witnessed Al Marri make consistent leaps up the leaderboard on the back of Celebryta to bring herself to within striking distance, and then crank up the heat aboard her 12-year-old to win rather comfortably ahead of the rest of her rivals.

Al Marri and Celebryta completed the four-loop ride in four hours 14 minutes and 50 seconds (4:14:50), recording an average speed of 28.25 kph over the 120 km distance.

Finishing second, 32 seconds in arrears, were Ebraheim Ali Sabeel and Farzibus Cabirat, representing MAB Stables, who were timed at 4:15:22, while a distant third were SS Private Stables pair of Suhail Ali Al Ghailani and SW Kulmaalif, who were clocked at 4:19:12.

The Dubai Crown Prince Endurance Festival is held in honour of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of the United Arab Emirates, Crown Prince of Dubai, and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai.

The ride began with Abdulla Abdulaziz Al Tawash and Full Options Niellans (SS Endurance Stables) seizing the initiative at the end of the first loop spanning 40 kms, with Al Marri and her mount placed 16th. The latter began her ascent during the second loop spanning 35 kms, and climbed up five spots to reach 11th even as Al Tawash ceded the advantage to his SS Endurance Stables teammate Saif Juma Al Beljafla, who rode JM Jadjmili.

Al Marri made further progress during the third loop running over 25 kms and yanked herself up five spots to reach sixth going into the final loop. At the same time, Beljafla held on to his spot at the top of the summit. Going into the final loop over 20 kms, Al Marri was 5 min 37 sec behind leader Beljafla and knew she had to go full throttle to have a chance of winning.

And Al Marri pushed hard during the course of the final phase, revving her mount and sending Celebryta flying at a pace that was nearly 8 kph quicker than the previous loop.

The end result was simply stunning as Al Marri and Celebryta ran home victorious with 32 seconds separating them from their second placed Emirati compatriots Ebraheim.

Ahmed Rashid Al Kaabi, General Manager of Dubai Equestrian Club, presented the winners with their trophies.

The Dubai Crown Prince Endurance Festival comprises four rides and began on 23 March with the 120 km Ladies Ride won by ABH Stables’ Sara Hasan Ahmed on Wayward. The festival resumed after a bout of inclement weather with the Al Yamamah Cup for Mares on 30 March, an event won narrowly by M7 Endurance Stables after Hamdan Ahmad Al Mansoori’s success in the saddle aboard SW Jashfiya AA 50.

The Festival continues with the 120 km Private Stables Ride tomorrow followed by the main event, the Dubai Crown Prince Endurance Cup on Wednesday, 1 April.

Al Mansoori and SW Jashfiya AA 50 hold their nerve to win Al Yamamah Cup

The 2026 Dubai Crown Prince Endurance Festival resumed at Dubai International Endurance City in Seeh Al Salam on Monday with M7 Endurance Stables recording a narrow victory in the Al Yamamah Cup for Mares courtesy of a textbook perfect ride by Hamdan Ahmad Al Mansoori aboard SW Jashfiya AA 50.

Al Mansoori and his 10-year-old mount went through the motions with absolute calm to claim one of the biggest prizes of their career after completing the ride in four hours 18 minutes and 18 seconds (4:18:18), having posted an average speed of 27.87 kph. The pair were fifth going into the fourth and final loop of the 120 km ride - the farthest they had dropped from the lead - but having calculated precisely when to strike, Al Mansoori and his mount launched a perfectly timed fight to overhaul their rivals and win by three seconds. Finishing second were F3 Stables pair of Rashed Mohamed Al Mehairi and Beduina Christiana, who were timed at 4:18:21.

Rounding off the podium was another pair from M7 Endurance Stables - Fares Ahmad Al Mansoori and his partner SW Jorka, who were a further second behind at 4:18:22. Hamdan and his mount SW Jashfiya AA 50 began the day posting the second best time during the first loop over 40 kms and were three seconds behind Alazem Stables pair of Hamad Mohammed Al Shamsi and Beduina Caroline. And while Al Shamsi and his partner managed to hold on to the lead over the second loop spanning 35 kms, Hamdan and SW Jashfiya AA 50 dropped two spots as they planned forward with tactics that would serve them well during the second half of the race.

The third loop over 25 kms witnessed a change of guard at the summit with Hamdan’s teammates Saif Juma Beljafla and Explosive De Venelles unseating Al Shamsi and Beduina Caroline.

Hamdan had dropped a further spot during the third loop and was placed fifth going into the final loop spanning 20 kms. He was staring at a 40 second deficit, but he knew SW Jashfiya AA 50 had plenty of fuel left and was not going to be the one running on fumes during the sprint phase of the event.

And so it was that after Hamdan asked for an effort, his mount obliged with a kick that eventually took the pair three seconds clear of the rest and to a nervous but well- deserved victory.

Al Mehairi did well to finish second. Having started the day in 12th, he moved up to 10th and then eighth before working harder to settle for silver. It was a rather up and down affair for third placed Al Mansoori, who began the day at fourth, climbed up to third and then dropped six places to ninth before returning to take third on the podium.

The Festival continues with the 120 km Private Stables Ride tomorrow followed by the main event, the Dubai Crown Prince Endurance Cup on Wednesday, 1 April.

‘A bond like no other’: farewell to horse Dilmun who represented Britain and completed extraordinary feats

The owner and rider of a horse who twice represented Britain and completed extraordinary feats of endurance has paid tribute to his character and their bond after his death aged 27.

Annie Joppe’s Arab Dilmun, with whom she contested the 2009 European Championships and 2014 World Equestrian Games (WEG), had spent a happy retirement with Annie, being pampered, loved and bossing the yard until the end.

“He was a star,” Annie told H&H.

But Annie nearly did not buy Dilmun at all; she said she first saw him advertised as a five-year-old, thought he looked good and went to see him.

“I went to try him, agreed to buy him and had the most terrible journey,” she said. “He wouldn’t load, it was awful, so he went back as I’d only had him on trial.

“Then, a year later, a friend of mine said ‘I’ve got this horse for sale’ and it turned out to be him. It was quite freaky really; I didn’t know she’d bought him.”

Annie said natural horsemanship techniques helped Dilmun learn to load happily, and “after that, he was brilliant”...

Endurance GB Announces New International Selection and Squad Support Team

March 14 2026

Endurance GB has announced a series of appointments to its International team, strengthening the selection and operational structure that supports British riders competing at championship level.

The new team brings together decades of experience across endurance riding, international competition, horse management and event organisation, helping to ensure that Great Britain continues to develop strong horse and rider combinations capable of competing on the world stage.

The appointments include two Team Selectors, a combined Selector and Logistics Manager, and a new Administrative Squad Support role to assist with the organisation and coordination of international campaigns.

What is endurance riding?

Endurance riding is a long-distance equestrian discipline that tests the fitness, partnership and management of horse and rider. Competitions range from introductory rides of around 16km through to international championship distances of up to 160km in a single day. Horses undergo regular veterinary inspections throughout the event to ensure their welfare and fitness to continue, making horse care and careful preparation central to the sport.

Endurance GB is the National Governing Body for endurance riding in Great Britain, supporting riders from grassroots participation through to international competition.

Strengthening the international programme

The newly appointed team will work alongside the wider squad management structure to monitor performances, support riders progressing through the levels and assist in the selection of horse and rider combinations to represent Great Britain at international championships.

Lauren Hirst – Team Selector and Logistics Manager

Lauren Hirst joins the International team as both a Team Selector and Logistics Manager, bringing with her extensive experience as a rider, organiser and equine transport professional.

Based in Suffolk, Lauren has been involved in endurance riding for nearly two decades and has competed internationally, including representing Great Britain at the Young Rider World Championships. Alongside riding, she has crewed at national and international level and is also a ride organiser of the Lavenham endurance event.

Professionally, Lauren works as UK Shipping Manager for Peden Bloodstock Ltd, coordinating the international transport of horses and grooms around the world.

Her role within Endurance GB will combine monitoring horse and rider combinations for selection with overseeing the complex logistics involved in transporting British teams to international competitions.

Jill Badcock – Team Selector

Joining the selection panel is Jill Badcock, one of Britain’s most experienced endurance riders, with more than forty years in the sport.

Based in Cornwall, Jill represented Great Britain internationally aboard the Arabian gelding Egyptian Khalifa, completing the renowned 160km Golden Horseshoe ride nine times and achieving both European individual and team championship success. Her extensive experience as an international competitor gives her valuable insight into the preparation and partnership required for horses and riders aiming to compete at championship level.

Olwen Bryer – Team Selector

Also appointed as a Team Selector is Olwen Bryer, who brings broad experience across many aspects of endurance. Olwen first became involved in the sport as a child growing up in South Africa and has since ridden, crewed and volunteered in endurance across three continents at both national and FEI level.

Her varied experience — including serving on the Endurance GB International Committee and working within the organisation’s office — provides a well-rounded perspective when assessing horse and rider partnerships progressing towards international competition.

Tanza Dryden – Administrative Squad Support

Supporting the team behind the scenes is Tanza Dryden, who joins the programme in a new Administrative Squad Support role. Based in County Durham, Tanza has long been involved in the endurance community, first discovering the sport as a child through family connections and spending many years crewing at rides.

Her role will provide additional support to the International team across planning, communications and administration, helping ensure that riders and management teams are fully supported when preparing for training events and championships.

Supporting Britain’s endurance athletes

Endurance GB Development Director Esther Groen welcomed the appointments, highlighting the importance of experience and collaboration within the international programme.

“International endurance is built on strong partnerships — not only between horse and rider, but also between the many people working behind the scenes to support them. This team brings together enormous experience from across the sport, and I’m excited to see the positive impact they will have on developing and supporting our riders as they progress towards championship level.”

Together, the team will help guide the development of Britain’s international endurance programme, identifying promising horse and rider combinations and ensuring they are supported as they progress towards championship opportunities.

With riders across the country competing at national and FEI level, Endurance GB hopes the strengthened team will play an important role in building the next generation of international endurance athletes.

At one point Pam Karner was lying on the ground, crying to herself in pain.

Her horse was above her. That was when she realised the need to dig deep.

You do endurance riding for a sense of knowing … knowing that you can complete this ride as an individual and as a team, with other riders and with your horse.

It’s knowing that you have the knowledge, training and resilience needed at the time.

The question is: Are you ready to step up? Do have the built-in resilience?

With endurance horse riding it’s just a matter of digging deep enough and finding it.

It’s true grit – a matter of belief in yourself, your horse and the world around you.

From Bellingen on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales and now in her early 70s, Pam Karner has completed the most extreme horse rides in the world.

These have included the Mongol Derby in Asia and the Gaucho Derby in South America.

Pam is in Africa at the moment, participating in another exciting endurance ride – through the Maasai Mara of Kenya’s highlands...

FEI provisionally suspends Sheikh Nasser al-Khalifa after the positive anti-doping of his Freesia de Lap mare

Chaccoinfo.com - Full Article

March 5, 2026
•Translated from Spanish•

The FEI has provisionally suspended Sheikh Nasser bin Hamad al-Khalifa, double endurance world champion in 2023 and 2024, after the positive for a banned substance detected in his mane Freesia de Lap. The control, carried out after a 160-kilometre race in Dubai on January 30, revealed the presence of atenolol, a beta-blocker included in the list of substances banned in competition. The suspension, automatic in these cases, has been in effect since March 2.

The positive for Lap’s Freesia came after the binomial’s victory at Dubai’s 3* CIS, where the eleven-year-old Anglo-Arab mare, trained by Muhammad Abbas Khalid, completed the test at an average speed of 20.85 km/h and with particularly fast heart recovery times. Atenolol, used in veterinary medicine to treat arrhythmias and other heart pathologies, can reduce the heart rate of the horse, a decisive parameter in the veterinary controls of the discipline. In the same competition, another Bahraini team horse, Divine du Vialaret, also tested positive for the same substance.

According to the anti-doping regulations of the FEI, a positive for prohibited substances implies the immediate suspension of both the horse and the rider until a hearing before the FEI Court. If the infringement is confirmed, the penalties can reach up to two years of suspension for a first offense, in addition to financial fines. The binomial is equally disqualified from the test in question. Sanctions can be reduced if the athlete demonstrates the absence of negligence or manages to trace the origin of the contamination by solid evidence. For the moment, neither Sheikh Nasser nor his coach have announced whether they will request the analysis of sample B.

Bahraini endurance had already faced recent sanctions. In 2023, the national team lost the gold medal won at the Bou Thib World Cups due to the steroid positive for Héra Durances, mounted by Abdoulrahmane Mohammed al-Zayed. Following the decision of the FEI Tribunal, the title passed into the hands of the French team. This new case once again places Bahrain’s team at the center of the controversy and opens a period of uncertainty for one of the most influential riders on the international circuit.

It’s a long and at times lonely journey but the Bony Mountain Pink Ride is always ready to be part of the fight against breast cancer.

Showing the impact the Warwick Trail and Endurance Riders Club has been making over the past decade, the endurance horse ride this year attracted a record field of horses and riders for the two-day event at the Bony Mountain Recreation Reserve.

This was an indication of the significance of the ride – also the popularity due to its novel nature in which riders have dressed not only themselves but their horses in pink.

Honouring the fact that cancer sufferers and survivors are not alone, riders travelled for up to seven and eight hours to attend the event – from northern New South Wales to the South Burnett.

There were six rides over the weekend and 191 nominations.

The queue of horses lining up for the Temperature, Pulse and Respiration (TPR) checks was a sight to be seen.

But it wasn’t just the number of people supporting this event, it was their vibrancy and commitment to the cause...

KUALA LUMPUR: The Equestrian Association of Malaysia (EAM) is expecting national riders to win at least six gold medals at the Malaysia SEA Games next year.

EAM honorary secretary Datuk Major (Rtd) Yap Mou Soon believes this is a realistic goal as they are planning to include endurance riding events to the Malaysia SEA Games programme.

This comes as no surprise as Malaysia has world-class riders in the discipline.

"The equestrian squad has always brought home medals when competing abroad and we hope to do the same when we compete on home soil next year," said Mou Soon today (Feb 3).

"Our key performance indicator (KPI) for the Malaysia SEA Games is to win six gold medals for the country.

"Our strategy is to add events in which we are strong in, most notably the endurance riding events...

Gaucho Derby 2026 – Race Day 9 – Wind Returns. Emotional Finishes.

Equestrianists.com - Full Story

Stevie Delahunt
27th February 2026

The wind is back today and so is a majority of the field. We started the day with the 15th place rider tie between AMC JDO and LST into a secure finish. The finish line flags were at full throttle which made the horses engage full breaks. Nevertheless these girls got their mounts across in one last trail riding challenge and managed to pass the vet check with ease as well. AMC wanted to bring her finish line ride home with her and the two spent some good cuddle time after he came in at an admirable 46bpm...

Gaucho Derby 2026 – Race Day 8 – Full Send. Winners Crowned.

26th February 2026

Yeeeehawww!!! If you were anywhere near that finish line today you either lost your voice, your mind, or both. Fourteen riders are in and what a wild ride it has been. With twenty seven riders still out there living their best cinematic adventure the fourteen who made it home have done their mates proud and given the world a show complete with suspense, plot twists, and questionable life choices.

Our top five riders came screaming in like they had somewhere important to be, throwing caution to the wind and gambling hard on passing the extremely low heart rate ruling we have set. It was less calculated endurance strategy and more riverboat poker with a stopwatch.

It’s been reported that when SWA and HMC decided to pump the gas to the line everyone locked eyes and collectively thought, “well here we go!” No one wanted to pull up and concede the lead but all were very aware they were about to bet their entire finish on a pulse check...

Gaucho Derby – Race Day 7 – Six Strong. One Shot.

Equestrianists.com - Full Story

Stevie Delahunt
25th February 2026

Ooooh, is this ever shaping up to be a photo finish. Thanks to a diabolical alignment of hold times and a healthy number of riders hitting it like the brick wall that it is, the front pack is about to be dropped into an even start gate. That’s right, folks. All six riders at the sharp end of the field are spending the night together and will launch at the gun at 8am sharp our time. If there were ever a night for obsessive map staring, second guessing, and ruthless gear trimming, this is it. One has to wonder how many layers and bits of luggage quietly disappear tonight in the name of horse speed.

We can already imagine professional sailor, navigator, 2023 Mongol Derby finisher, and Tevis Cup finisher LJO doing exactly that. Or perhaps professional steeplechaser SWA will remind us all of his prime jockey skills, alongside teammate ASL, who comes from a long line of racehorse fanatics and has been casually demonstrating those jockey instincts all week long.

Then there is 2022 Mongol Derby veteran HMC, who took a nasty tumble in the 2024 Gaucho Derby. After returning home with busted ribs and punctured lungs, his daughter reportedly said, “Whenever we fell off you made us get back on and finish. You didn’t finish.” And so here he is. Not just finishing, but absolutely crushing this race...

Gaucho Derby 2026 – Day 6 – Weather Turns. Race Ignites.

Equestrianists.com - Full Article

Stevie Delahunt
23rd February 2026

The constant winds have finally brought some change.
In the weather.
And in the leaderboard.

And in morale.

Today the relentless rage of the Patagonian gods delivered wind with a side of rain and a generous helping of hail, and, we hear, the only clap of thunder to rumble across the pampas in years! Riders were oh so very excited to test their rain gear and also notch things up a gear as they tumbled out of the delightful mountains and forests. At least the dust got wiped off of their smiling faces.

Our original leading three, ASL, VBU, and SWA, tore away from the pack, but disaster struck yet again when a heart rate penalty entered the chat. The nuances of the course and shifting locations along the route have had the front running packs trading places back and forth, but it now appears LJO, RTO, HMC, and VBU are breaking away and properly going for it. But more on that in a moment...

Gaucho Derby 2026 – Day 5 – Down, But Not Out.

23rd February 2026

These kids are alright. It’s been just five days since they all graduated start camp and cantered off. They grow up so fast. And on race day five it appears our graduates are stepping up and taking the reins or just stepping down; and we mean down but not out! In the past we’ve watched all sorts of professional horsemen (and just plain professionals) taken out by these horses, this terrain and the race course itself. But these riders are impressing us! Day five and we’ve had our first two transition into Adventure category but every last one of them is still in it...

Gaucho Derby 2026 – Day 4 – Walk First. Ride Later.

Equestrianists.com - Full Story

Stevie Delahunt
22nd February 2026

Today kicked off with ODU and GHE performing the iconic walk of shame after their horses buggered off thanks to some self-admitted poor judgment. The horses slipped their hobbles, their riders, and any remaining sense of accountability, then promptly made it back to the corrals on their own. ODU and GHE marked the location of their bags and hiked their saddles back in on foot so they could reunite with their mounts and ride out again, all without tipping into the dreaded “outside assistance” adventure category. Style points for doing it the hard way.

AKE also had a brief horse-catching moment this morning when her mischievous mount decided to mosey off. She caught him, got rolling, and stayed firmly in touch with her front-running pack like it was all part of the plan...

Gaucho Derby 2026 – Day 3 – Saddles Hot. Spirits Not.

21st February 2026

Okay sports fans! It’s really shaping up to be a race today as riders begin to spread themselves enthusiastically across the map and, more importantly, across the vet stations.

Sportsmanship and horsemanship are still taking precedence, but morale took a bit of a dip as altitude dropped straight down into our second horse change. The horses came in spicy, and the riders got their first real taste of catching their drawn mounts; a moment equal parts skill, optimism, and quiet bargaining with the universe.

A few penalties were sat, but the hospitality and food very nearly made up for the lengthy process of getting through this check. Almost.

Several riders also reported catching the rider flu that’s loping around the field. ARA was the next to hop on that trend, reporting that she’s “definitely felt better,” which is never the sentence you want to hear mid-derby...

Hola, dot watchers!!!

It’s been another day here in Patagonia, and we simply must spill the mate (tea? leaf soup? emotional support beverage?) with you.

We’ve said it before, but we’ll say it again: this group is blowing us away with their professionalism… or perhaps we’re just being literally blown away by this relentless Patagonian wind. Hard to say.

Today’s forecast promised rain, and history promised unplanned dismounts. Thankfully, neither showed up in any meaningful way across our mountains and pampas. In fact, by some small miracle, all forty riders are still in the game, and very few encountered anything worse than breathtaking terrain and truly gorgeous horses.

Ironically, the most damage today happened on foot. Riders like ODU reported toe-stubbing and tripping while leading horses. She’s fairly certain she broke her toe but plans to tough it out and simply pay closer attention to her feet whenever she decides to hoof it from here on out...

We’ve been wondering… ‘What happened to the fireworks?’

Start line was quite boring for all the crew today as every rider, and ever more spectacularly yet- every saddlebag managed to defy gravity off the start line. This year’s riders have been especially professional and on top of their game.

The pack promptly cantered off into the wilderness together and then decided to make a holiday of it and settled into a big mob camp out at Vet Check One...

Meet the Amazonian racing 500km across Patagonia for women's health

AboutAmazon.eu - Full Article

Written by About Amazon Team
February 17 2026

Madeleine, Pan-EU Account Executive at Amazon in France, is preparing for one of the world's toughest horse races: the Gaucho Derby, a 500km orientation endurance challenge across Patagonia.

The 10-day race isn't just about personal achievement—Madeleine is raising funds for a charity which provides healthcare access to France's most vulnerable women.

After completing the 1,000km Mongol Derby in 2022 and raising €18,000 for charity, Madeleine is back in the saddle with an even bigger mission. On February 18, Madeleine Motelay will mount a horse she's never ridden before and begin racing across 500 kilometres of Patagonian wilderness. For the next 10 days, the CDG10-based Account Executive will navigate through the mountains, sleep in a tent alone, and switch to a new horse every 70 kilometres. We caught up with Madeleine before her departure to learn what motivates her, how she's preparing, and why vulnerable women's healthcare access matters so much to her...

From the Grand National to 500km across Patagonia - Gold Cup-winning rider to take on challenge dubbed 'ultimate test of horse and jockey'

RacingPost.com - Full Article

Sam Waley-Cohen is preparing for the ultra-endurance test, which takes place over ten days in South America

Matt Rennie
10 February 2026

He conquered the Grand National fences on several occasions, but Sam Waley-Cohen is raring to take on an even more extreme test of stamina for both horse and rider as he attempts to add the Gaucho Derby to his impressive list of triumphs.

Waley-Cohen was one of Britain's most successful amateur jockeys, winning a Gold Cup and two King George VI Chases before retiring with victory on Noble Yeats in the 2022 Aintree showpiece. Now he is set to get back in the saddle for a 500km challenge across Patagonia in South America.

The race is similar to another famous ultra-endurance test, the Mongol Derby, and Waley-Cohen flies out on Wednesday ahead of some pre-race training days, with the event proper beginning on February 18.

He said: "It's completely different from the racing we're used to across a brilliant area of country – it's like the old western pioneers. It's going to be a new adventure, and a proper test, but it should be great fun"...

It’s Sunday Funday here at Start Camp and the weather is a balmy 30 knots of wind with extra gusts. The riders are getting just a taste of what these biblical tides of air can really do. Patagonia is known for blowing roofs off of Puestos (strongholds built for use by Gauchos within the far out foothills) and being so vehement entire highways are closed until it subsides.

Amidst the summer breeze friendships and alliances are forming and tents are falling. ACA, TOM and ACP have been paling around as a happy 2025 academy graduate gang whilst GHE and NMC have trauma bonded over having sent their lost kit on its own adventure somewhere in Turkey. To their chagrin the surprise retirement of two riders looks like they’ll be able to commandeer all the items needed to clear the mandatory kit list officially required for them to hit the start line...

Gaucho Derby 2026 – Rider rollcall

Equestrianists.com - Full Article

Holly Conyers
12th February 2026

Derby fans, buenos días. We’re back. The long wait since the nail biting finale and thrilling live coverage of the 2025 Mongol Derby is over. In just under a week’s time, on Wednesday 18 February 2026, the start flag will go down on the 3rd official Gaucho Derby. 42 supremely talented (and slightly mad) jockeys will hoof it out into the wilds, as the long race to the Finish Line fiesta begins. And – equally importantly – everyone following along from home will have something utterly addictive to distract them from boring inconveniences like work and other minor responsibilities for 10 glorious days to come.

Get ready for your new obsession. The Gaucho Derby is back.

The hour draws near. While the crew are already here and busy cleaning out the local vinotecas to stock the Start Camp bar, the riders are beginning to trickle into El Calafate. They have less than 48 hours to make any final frantic changes to their packing list and game plan, before they load up onto the bus for the long journey to head out to our remote Start Camp. As months – and in some cases, years – of careful prep and dreams come to a head, they’ll be asking themselves the questions that really matter: How many pairs of pants do I really need to ride 10 days and 500km across Patagonia? Is deodorant a luxury I can in fact do without?...

Great Britain: Pat Guerin Celebrates Extraordinary 20,000km Lifetime Distance Award in Endurance Riding

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Knutsford, Cheshire – British endurance rider Pat Guerin has reached a remarkable milestone, achieving 20,000 competitive kilometres in endurance riding, marking more than four decades of dedication to the sport she first discovered in the late 1970s. “I am absolutely delighted and still can’t quite believe I have ridden so many successful competitive kilometres,” said Pat. “It’s been an incredible journey.”

Pat has ridden since the age of five, but her endurance career began after moving from Suffolk to Cheshire in 1977. Answering a local newspaper advert to exercise hunters led to her first endurance ride in 1978 on the mare Treble Chance, a 40-mile Exmoor qualifier. From that moment, she was hooked. She went on to ride for several years before purchasing the iconic Blue ‘G’, beginning a partnership that would define much of her early success.

Among Pat’s many highlights are 3rd and 4th placings in the EHPS Summer Solstice 100-mile rides, the unforgettable experience of mass starts in the dark, and being shortlisted for a Great Britain team to compete in the USA in 1988. In 1989, she rode for England in the winning team at the very first Home International. Pat has also placed in the top five of the prestigious Manar Trophy on four occasions—once with Blue ‘G’ and three times with C F Winter Amadeus.

Still actively competing, Pat currently rides two pure-bred Arab geldings: C F Winter Amadeus, 19, who has recently achieved his own 4,800km award, and Farid My Lad, 16. Amadeus was a classic Grade 1 horse in his prime and a three-time winner of the Arab Horse Society Pure Bred Performance Horse Award. Farid My Lad offers a different challenge, particularly at vettings, but both horses continue to thrive under Pat’s thoughtful and experienced management.

Pat credits her longevity in the sport to steady, varied training, careful horse management, and knowing when to rest. She combines regular hacking with flatwork lessons and occasional dressage competitions, while her horses live out as much as possible throughout the year. She also acknowledges the vital role of her support network, including her husband David and a loyal group of friends who have crewed for her over the years.

A long-standing member of the Cheshire and Staffordshire bridleways community, Pat also values the social side of riding through pleasure rides and training groups, describing endurance as “an all-inclusive sport where everyone is friendly, helpful and encouraging.”

Reflecting on how the sport has evolved, Pat notes huge changes in feeding, equipment and clothing, while believing the heart of endurance remains the same: partnership, resilience and shared experience across beautiful landscapes.

Looking ahead, Pat plans to continue riding 32km and 40km rides regularly, hopes to complete more two-day events, and has her eye on returning to favourites such as Red Dragon, Cirencester and Well Vale.

“Endurance GB is my absolutely amazing happy place,” she said. “As a child I dreamed of having my own pony and riding for miles and miles. Endurance has certainly fulfilled that dream.”

Pat Guerin’s 20,000km achievement stands as a testament to commitment, horsemanship and a lifelong passion for endurance riding within the Endurance GB community.

There is something about the Australian bush that gets into your blood.

That has certainly been the case for Tom Thomsen.

His story could easily be made into a movie – what he has learnt and what he has done with horses across time and distance is quite breathtaking.

Now he has moved on to mentoring other riders coming through in the sport of endurance.

Nothing has stopped his love and enthusiasm for riding, even at the age of 83. And nothing has diminished his recognition of the horses he has had the good fortune to have been involved with...

The pair spent eight months on the road after setting off from New South Wales on May 20 last year Travelling up to 32 kilometres a day, they covered more than 4,400 kilometres, tracking the entire journey.

Cavallomagazine.it - Full Article

During the two-day event in Perugia, the world of equestrian endurance focused on the strategic guidelines for the evolution of the sector, including new generations, sustainability and international comparison. 19 January 2026

The FEI Endurance Forum 2026 concluded in Perugia., a key event for the international community of the discipline, which brought together stakeholders in the sector – athletes, coaches, veterinarians, officials, judges, and organizers – representing over 40 countries.

During the meeting, a shared desire to strengthen a development model based on responsibility, organizational skills, and attention to the principles that characterize endurance emerged clearly.
