Bahrain: Taher lifts title in endurance race

YOUSEF Taher of the Royal Endurance Team won the seniors race while Fahad Sulaiman of Al Asayel Stable bagged the juniors crown in the Bahrain International Endurance Horseride Challenge, organised by the Bahrain Royal Equestrian and Endurance Federation (Breef), yesterday at the Endurance Village in Sakhir.

The event, which was sponsored by Batelco, featured two races for the juniors and seniors over 119 kms in addition to two qualifying races which were warm up events held over 85 and 60 kms.

Abu Dhabi: A strong field of UAE and international riders are expected to take part in the sixth edition of the prestigious HH The President of the UAE Endurance Cup, to be held on February 17 at the Emirates International Endurance Village in Al Wathba.

The 160-km ride is being jointly organised by the UAE Equestrian and Racing Federation and the Emirates International Endurance Village under the patronage of Shaikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Presidential Affairs.

6 Australian Champions Attend Event

Fresh from their success at the World Championship, Australia, winners of the team Silver Medal, have six invited riders competing in 2005 HH Presidents Cup in Abu Dhabi.

The husband and wife team of Peter and Penny Toft were members of that successful team. Both the Tofts will be riding horses from the Al Reef Stable of HH Sheikh Tahnoon Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Dubai: A host of VIPs and royals participated in the FEI World Endurance Championship. General Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Minister of Defence, led the way for the UAE with his three sons: Shaikh Hamdan, Shaikh Rashid and Shaikh Majid.

Others taking part were Princess Haya Bint Al Hussain of Jordan, Shaikh Nasser Bin Hamad Al Khalifa and his brother Shaikh Khalid from Bahrain, Sultan Mizan Zailnal of Malaysia and Shaikh Mohammad Bin Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani from Qatar.

France and New Zealand suffer early exit

France and New Zealand could not hide their disappointment after being channelled out of the competition yesterday.
"It was disappointing to be out of the team title competition early during the ride," New Zealand team member, Mark Tylee told the Gulf News after his mount Jamahl went lame.

Shaikh Hazza's golden decision

Dubai: Shaikh Hazza Bin Sultan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan can be pleased with his late decision to switch horses, as it brought him a record-breaking performance.

He was supposed to ride the leading Purebred Arabian endurance horse Shahdon, formerly ridden by two-time world champion Valerie Kanavy.

Instead, he opted for Hachim, the horse he rode to victory in Bahrain. Sure enough, the 11-year-old bay gelding from the Wrsan Stables unleashed tremendous fighting spirit.
