Pagosa veterinarian Dr. Dwight Hooton of Elk Park Animal Hospital flew to the United Kingdom Wednesday, Aug. 15, where he will serve as team vet for the USA team at the Longines FEI World Endurance Championships at Euston Park, near Newmarket, Suffolk, UK, beginning today.
The main event, which takes place Saturday, Aug. 25, is a 100-mile race that must be completed within 18 hours. It is the closest competition to the Olympics in endurance horse riding. If and, as Hooton says, when, endurance riding becomes an Olympic sport, the World Endurance Championships would be the qualifying race.
Hooton, who has been practicing in Pagosa Springs for the last four years, will be responsible for the medical care of the U.S. team’s seven horses, six of which will compete among 160 horses from all seven continents.
Hooton, who is also the team’s acupuncturist, will begin daily evaluations of the team’s horses as soon as he arrives and will continue to do so up to the day of the race. Seven and one-half to eight hours later, when the top horse/rider teams begin to cross the finish line, Hooton will resume evaluations and apply recovery treatment to the horses before they return to the United States.
This year, Hooton’s role is especially important as this is the first time in 14 years that the United States team is in a position to bring home a team medal...

Hungary: FEI World Endurance Championships for Young Horses 2012, Babolna
HORSE SPORT AUGUST 16, 2012 | 0 COMMENTS
Double gold for Bahrain, while France takes all silver and bronze
by Louise Parkes
Bahrain claimed gold in both the seven and eight year old categories at the FEI World Championships for Young Endurance Horses 2012 at Babolna in Hungary at the weekend. HH Sheikh Nasser Bin Hamad Al Khalifa topped the seven year old section with Dhab, while Jaffer Mirza brought Uszko D’Hotelhoge home to claim the eight year old title. And French riders scooped all the remaining medals, with Vincent Dupont (Khandjar du Boulve) and Laurent Mosti (Assiha de Fignols) taking silver and bronze in the younger horse division while Arthur Desprez (Glycin de Suleiman) and Melissa Bisoffi (Nadia El Fee de Boz) did likewise with their older horses.
This year’s FEI World Championships for Young Endurance Horses attracted competitors from 15 countries – Bahrain, France, Poland, Italy, Germany, Hungary, Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Norway, Estonia, Austria, Argentina, Spain and Belgium.
State Stud Farm
The event was staged at the famous Babolna State Stud Farm which, lying halfway between Vienna (AUT) and Budapest (HUN), is one of the oldest breeding stations in Europe.
Established in 1789 as a Royal Imperial Stud of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, with the mission of supplying horses to the army and the Royal Guard, it was originally a branch of the largest military breeding operation in Europe at Meszohegyes, near the Romanian border. However Babolna quickly became the source of the Empire’s elite horses, specialising in the production of top-quality Arabian pure-breds and larger part-breds, the latter developing into the Shagya Arabians that are so popular and successful today.
Despite suffering severe losses, the Stud survived both World Wars and eventually came under the control of the Hungarian Ministry of Agriculture. In 2001 the State-owned company, Babolna Memzeti Menesbirtok Kft, was established to preserve the historic complex, and the Stud continues to promote breeding, training, exhibitions and competition organisation in the region...

Endurance World Championship route a 'deceptive challenge'
PRESS RELEASE
DATE: 16 August 2012
EMBARGO:
Immediate release
Route for Longines FEI World Endurance Championships 2012 a true championship test say organisers
Organisers of the Longines FEI World Endurance Championships at Euston Park, near Newmarket, Suffolk, UK have released final details of the 160km track that will test up to 150 riders from around 40 countries on 25th August 2012.
The route comprises six loops of between 20km and 38km five of which take riders on different routes around the Suffolk countryside covering heathland, forest tracks, river meadows and open farmland all with the support of local landowners, farmers and the Forestry Commission. Appropriately, the field will be following in ancient footsteps as the route crosses the start of the historic 120mile Icknield Way, Britain’s oldest long-distance path. As a boost to horse and rider, at the end of the ride the final stretch takes the field back out over familiar territory with a repeat of the fourth 20km loop. However, course designers Steve Hulse and Gary Honeywill, say the main aim throughout the ride has been to provide interesting and varied terrain that will provide a true championship test.
Steve Hulse, a former jockey said: “The route may be flat, but it is deceptively difficult and requires real riding to get it right all the way to the finish.
“We have created a route over the best going possible, it’s a track that riders will enjoy but it will need care in places particularly around some of the wooded sections. The three river crossings are a real feature.”
Reflecting the degree of difficulty presented, at the Championship test event in July 2011, there were 21 finishers from 71 starters. Riding Aghaab, which is among his nominated rides for the championship, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum won the FEI CEI*** 160km event in 7hr40min06sec, averaging 20.86km/hr.
Championship technical advisor John Robertson said: “The aim in staging a competition of this kind is to provide a track that is both inviting to all but from which the real champions emerge. The Euston Park course flows well but will also present a tough technical challenge.”
Championship host the Duke of Grafton said: “At the first endurance ride held here in 24 July 2005 it was my late father’s vision that one day, we would host a World Championship. It is very sad for myself and family, that he is not here to see that dream realized, but I know that he would be very proud of all that has been achieved.”
Championship organiser James MacEwan said: “We have been running endurance rides here at Euston Park for nearly 10 years and we hope that what we have here will become a benchmark for future championships.”
Reigning world champions, Spain’s Maria Alvarez and Nobby hold the record as the only combination to have claimed two world titles in succession and Spain will be hoping that Ms Alvarez is again among their line-up. The UAE currently holds the team world title. Alvarez’s winning time of 7hr:35min.44sec at the Alltech Kentucky World Equestrian Games in 2010 will be a target for the winning rider at this summer’s World Endurance Championships.
The full list of nominated entries for the competition will be published on 14th August 2012.
Alongside title sponsor Longines, two Dubai industry giants, Meydan and Emaar Properties are additional supporters of the championships.
With around 1000 participants, riders, crew and officials, the championship will have a significant economic impact on the area around Euston Park and the Newmarket area during the build-up and immediately post competition.

News Raid World Championship 2012.
We report on the next Raid World Championship 2012, the news, come from the official website of the Spanish Equestrian Federation, where we describe, as much data, full details of the test, and the history of Binomials participants.
It note on a new course, the news of the Resistance Equestrian Team this new Federated, head of the world's Raid, we want to be well informed and we have samples of interest in the discipline "No Olympic" but more medals achieved for our country.
This is the rating of the FEI:
"CTO. RAID WORLD: EUSTON PARK (GBR)
Next week, specifically on Saturday 25, vie for the 160 miles from the Raid World Championship 2012 in the well known British Euston Park facilities.
The discipline of Raid, Continental Championships held in odd years, and unlike others, the World Championships in even years (some, at the premises of the World Equestrian Games, and others in specific sites, coinciding with the years Olympic).
This is the case in this year's World Championship '12: Olympic even year and therefore in specific venue. Not surprisingly, the venue that is hosting this Championship is set in the British Isles.
The Raid is the equestrian discipline that produces most successful in Spain, so hopes are high, even taking into account the unstoppable drive of the computers in the Arab world.
In any case, when a team has been Champion and Champion sub continental, where a team line Champions World Champions and Continental, the expectations are more than justified.
Noteworthy among the six components of our delegation, the proper name of Maria Alvarez Ponton and Nobby, current World Champion Single (2008 and 2010) and Single European Champions (2009 and 2011). It so happens that Mary, who in 2010 ran the Championships. World of Kentucky, who won with Nobby, just weeks after giving birth, has recently become a mother. If 2010 was her husband, Jaume Punti, who ran a test preparation with Nobby Nobby this time, at 17, comes not in competition since last year.
Alex Luque was World Champion individually in the WEG Aachen 2006. This time again the team with Ikland, a Shagya 8 years with which he won last year in Bratislava and Lluçanes. It's unusual origin, may be worth clarifying that the Shagya is named after a stallion born in Syria in 1810, originally tremendously discussed (apparently Arabic, but not 100%). In any case Shagya was developed in the Austro-Hungarian empire in the nineteenth century, and its origins lead us to the Stud Books of Babolna and Tropolcianky.
Jaume Punti, individual runner Lezirias Europe '07 run, finally, Quram Ulm, an Arab of 8 years he ran this year in the 160 kilometers from Dubai, where they were fifth against all Arab armies.
Maria Uriarte, fifth this year in the 160 miles of Castelsagrat, will compete in this competition mate, Arabic Oliver TB 11 years.
Monica Comas, participant and in several World Championships for young horses, will be released "with the greatest" in Esuton Park, riding Gaeia, an Arabian mare 9 years, with which this year was 7 th in the 160 miles of Casarrubios.
Finally, Oriol Casals repeated, with the Arab Zarha de Vilaformiu 10 years, with the same partner as last year remain sub European Team Championship and fifth individually.
All of them, on Saturday 25, take the exit to 06.30 am to meet the 160 kilometer run, for those who are granted a maximum of 11 hours and 26 minutes.
Rounding out the Spanish delegation Ignasi Casas (Team Leader), Fabrizio Pochesci (veterinarian), Marco Villamor (farrier), Daniel Fenaux (Assistant Team Manager) and Anna Maxenchs (assistant). "

World Endurance Championships - Opening Ceremony
Endurancegb.co.uk
11th August 2012
Chair of Endurance GB, Jo Claridge has received more information regarding the Opening Ceremony. Provision will be made for the general public in a "Henman Hill" type area........
There will be large screens and loos for anyone who wants to see the ceremony and get involved in the atmosphere.
Jo says.......
Unfortunately there is physically not enough room to accommodate everyone round the area and those ticketed seats are reserved for competitors and official guests.
The logistics of accommodating an unknown number of visitors are proving very difficult for the organisers and I do hope that you can all understand the problems. Until the final declarations of entry are made it is impossible to estimate the number of competitors and all their entourages!
Janah Management Ltd is determined that no-one should feel left out and that provision is being made to allow everyone to enjoy the occasion as far as possible.
As Chairman I do urge you all to support this fantastic event - we have thoroughly enjoyed the Olympics - now we have our own version just for Endurance! There will be hiccups and disappointments - but please do come with a positive attitude!
Everyone is working really hard to make this a really enjoyable event - we have a fantastic Team representing Endurance GB - we just need your support!
Any suggestions for a more suitable name will be welcomed - "enclave" means an area or territory surrounded by another territory - seemed appropriate!!!!!!!!!!
Looking forward to seeing lots of you soon! Cheers, Jo

BAHRAIN's Jaffar Mirza yesterday clinched the World Endurance Horse Ride Championship for eight-year-old horse category in Babolna, Hungary.

New Zealand: Endurance riding a family activity

Endurance rides of up to 160 kilometres are a family sport for the Smith Family.
Murray and Andrea Smith and their daughters Georgia, 15, and Brigitte, 12, are from the upper Kawhatau Valley towards the Ruahine Ranges from Mangaweka.
There they farm 566 hectares of hill country running beef and sheep.
"Our riding must fit in around the stock and farm work but we certainly endeavour to make it work if we can," said Mr Smith. Regular farm work also keeps the Arab horses fit for their long 160km rides.
Both girls have ridden from tiny with both longing to start endurance rides long before their parents felt they were ready.
"We have never made them ride; in fact it was hard for them to wait when we felt they were not ready," said Andrea. Murray was keen to ride while Andrea was a little more hesitant with two young daughters.
However, after time with a pony club, Georgia had her first ride at age seven while Brigitte was just five. Both girls are also keen show jumpers, but this has to fit around the endurance riding. The season runs from August to Easter.
The sport is very disciplined with a strong emphasis on the health and welfare of both horse and rider. Riders cannot start till age five and although there is a novice system, the speed restriction does not allow the horse or rider to go too fast.
"No one can just buy a horse and start," said Mrs Smith. "Both the horse and rider need conditioning..."

Another Australian Withdraws from the WEC
July 29, 2012
The Australian Endurance Team has had another blow to its preparation today, when Ondy (Andrea Laws King) on medical advice has withdrawn from the Australian Endurance Team.
Ondy had a nasty fall from her Horse last weekend.
We thank her for conducting herself in a professional manner and wish her a speedy recovery.

The horses leave Australia with Chef Peter Toft from Melbourne on August 8th.
Penny and grooms will leave several days before together with Norbert and Jane, Talea and family.
This is a reduced team and certainly not what was planned, however, what we may miss in numbers we will make up with experience, with Penny the veteran of many WC’s , not having missed one since Compeigne in 2000, Alexandra having been a team member in 2009 at Babolna and a groom at WC’s since before she could walk almost, Norbert and Jane experienced the highs and lows at Kentucky 2 years ago and have well and truly got the bug! Talea and family will have to experience all before them.
We wish the Team every success, and will try and keep everyone posted.

On Behalf of the Australian Endurance Team to contest the 2012 World Endurance Championships, I would like to sincerely thank the Arabian Horse Society of Australia, it’s Board and members for providing each of the five horses with a AHSA team rug.
I would like to acknowledge the AHSA’s support to all our teams at World Equestrian Games and World Endurance Championships over the past two decades.
Our 2012 team, like most other teams, consists of Australian Arabian Horses and this team will go as teams before representing all that is good about Australian Arabians with their amazing athleticism. Our representative team is a credit to the many Australian breeders who, whilst acknowledging the type and beauty of the Arabian horse, also know Arabians are bred to be ridden.
Currently the International component of Endurance in Australia is undergoing considerable reform and the 2012 team is excited to have the honour to represent Australia on the world stage.
Profiles of Horses and Riders will be on the Equestrian Australian website shortly.

Great Britain: Supergran prepares for gruelling 100-mile horse marathon
Walesonline.co.uk - Full Articleby Abbie Wightwick, WalesOnlineAug 5 2012
At a time when most Welsh grans are beginning to look forward to a relaxing retirement, Tricia Hirst is instead preparing for a gruelling 100-mile horse marathon – at the age of 54.
The supergran will represent Britain when the Longines World Endurance Riding Championships, one of the toughest for horses and riders, takes place in Suffolk later this month.
Cantering at 20km an hour for 100 miles on her horse Madjin des Pins Tricia will be part of the Great Britain team competing against 160 riders from 40 teams across the globe.
It’s the latest challenge for an athlete who recently completed a 56-mile ultra marathon on foot.
“I’ve been training all year for this one goal. I’m the fittest I’ve ever been in my life,” says Tricia, who started endurance riding at the age of 38.
“It’s a wonderful sport and I’m looking forward to the race.”
The mum of three, who became a grandmother earlier this year, lives in Meifod, near Welshpool, where she keeps eight horses and rides every day...

Bahrain: Quarantine 'puts animals at risk...'
Gulf-daily-news.com
By Ahmed Al Omari , Posted on » Wednesday, August 01, 2012
BAHRAIN'S quarantine facilities could be putting the lives of animals at risk, it has been claimed.
The complex, at the Endurance Village in Sakhir, is poorly equipped and has no air conditioning, which could prove fatal for the animals in summer, warned race horse owner Jalil Al Mallah.
He is due to import six European bred horses, worth a combined total of more than BD45,000, from the UK today and claims he will have to risk their lives just to clear customs.
Mr Al Mallah has already secured the paperwork to take them to the Endurance Village, but plans to stand at the gates of the Rashid Equestrian and Horse Racing Club in Sakhir, where he already owns stables, until they agree to take in his horses.
"I will not take my horses to that crummy quarantine just to have them die," the Bahraini told the GDN.
"When my horses come in I will sign them out and I will drive straight to the race club and offload them there until the club lets me in or arrests me.
"One of these horses, called Cheylesmore, sported the Bahraini flag when the team won a race in England against British horses and now I am just trying to bring them home and this is how they are treated.
"These horses win for Bahrain and they should be treated like winners when they come back home."
Officials from the Municipality and Urban Planning Affairs Ministry could not be reached for comment, but sources admitted the facilities could be better.
"The owner is justified in not wanting to send his animals to the quarantine facility in Endurance Village," they said.
"There is no AC in the facility which is dangerous for all animals, but especially horses that come from the UK.
"Horses coming from a cold country will not be able to survive in this heat at that facility."
The source advised the horse owner to seek permission to keep his horses at the Rashid Equestrian and Horse Racing Club.
But Mr Al Mallah already says he has been denied use of the facility, which has its own quarantine.
"This is not the first case of animals from overseas coming into the club stables, so I don't understand why I can't this time," he said.
"I got everything approved, I got all the certificates and the tests done. Not only that, the horses are already in the process of being shipped. "If I cancel the shipping, then I will have to pay a 70 per cent penalty and so I can't just wait."

Australia: Kilkivan Hosts 2013 Tom Quilty
Kilkivanquilty.com
Kilkivan, Queensland, will be the host of the 2013 Tom Quilty Gold Cup on Sunday June 9th.
A tiny town with a heart of gold
Queensland’s first gold discovery was at Kilkivan in 1852 and subsequent findings escalated into a gold rush in 1868. Small pockets of gold are still found today, and a working gold mine offers visitors the opportunity to try their luck at gold panning.
The town itself forms the eastern and northern gateways of the South Burnett region of south-east Queensland, Australia. The South Burnett is home to two of Queensland’s biggest inland waterways (Lake Boondooma

and the Bjelke-Petersen Dam) and is also one of the largest wine-growing regions in the State. Most of the South Burnett is located just a few pleasant driving hours from Brisbane.
Kilkivan is located on the Bicentennial National Trail which runs right through the centre of the Township with 107 kms of the
Trail running through the Shire itself. The annual ‘Kilkivan Great Horse Ride’ is a spectacular event, attracting over 1,000 riders to its trek along parts of the Trail.
As well as lovely accommodation, the local B&B offers sumptuous meals and the opportunity to take some of the goodies with you in a South Burnett gift hamper. Enjoy a drink at the local hotel and meet the owner, Fred Brophy - operator of the famous ‘Fred Brophy’s Boxing Tent’.
Attractions within this area are diverse. Glimpse life as it used to be, by wanderingthrough the town’s historical museum in the main street. Mudlo Conservation Park, north of Kilkivan, is ideal for birdwatching.
Kilkivan may be a small town, but its rich Australian history make this a must-see Quilty event.
Matthew Sample Withdraws from Australian Team for WEC
July 25 2012
Matthew Sample has today announced his withdrawal from the Australian Team for the 2012 World Endurance Championships.
Matthew has kept the Team Vet and myself aware of an unsoundness issue with his horse Brookleigh Ricardo and the decision has been accepted after giving him every opportunity to rectify the problem.
This is disappointing for Matthew after putting in considerable effort to prepare the horse and himself for this level of competition. It is also disappointing for the team to lose one of its valuable combinations.

Bahraini riders set to stage comeback
Gulf-daily-news.comJuly 21 2012
THREE of Bahrain's most prominent riders will be in action today at the 120km Endurance Horse Ride at Compiegne, in France.
After their heartbreaking finishes at the recently-organised Endurance Horse Ride in Poland where riders were forced to make consecutive withdrawals, the Bahraini team hope to make a solid comeback today.
Royal Endurance Team captain Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad will lead the Bahraini trio in today's ride. The remaining two are Raed Mahmood and Abdulrahman Al Saad.
It will be the second event for Al Saad, while Mahmood has been with the team since the start of their European tour in June.
The Bahrainis are currently preparing for the FIA World Endurance Championships 2012 that will take place at Euston Park near Thetford in the UK on August 25.
Shaikh Nasser said the team is keen to take advantage of today's ride ahead of the world championships, which will be over 160km.
In the world championships, featuring a total of six stages, riders from 44 countries from all around the globe are due to take part.
The Supreme Council for Youth and Sports chairman and president of the Bahrain Olympic Committee said the Royal Endurance Team will be the main sponsors of the Compiegne Ride.
Meanwhile, in line with Shaikh Nasser's directives, a Bahraini team of juries will be assisting the organisers at the race.
They include technical director of the Bahrain Royal Equestrian and Endurance Federation Haider Al Zubi, who arrived along with Dr. Abbas Al Haiki, Mohammed Dadulla and Dr Mohammed Al Hammad of Saudi Arabia.
The decision to have several members of the Bahrain ground jury at this ride was to take advantage of conducting one of the ideal races in Europe held under suitable weather conditions.
On their part, the jury members expressed thanks and appreciation to Shaikh Nasser for this gesture. They also noted the continued support of Breef president Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa throughout the season.

An FEI World Equestrian Games™ 2018 presentation will be made to the five Candidates at FEI Headquarters in Lausanne on 11 July to explain the FEI’s expectations and procedures concerning the Games. Legal Documentation will also be given to Candidates during that meeting. Completed Legal Documentation, including a signed Host Agreement, must be submitted to the FEI by 15 December 2012.
“It is fantastic to have five really strong bids for hosting the FEI World Equestrian Games™ in 2018 and there could be no better endorsement of the FEI’s flagship event”, FEI Secretary General Ingmar de Vos said. “The new bidding process that we put in place last year for the FEI World Equestrian Games™ has generated a huge amount of interest and we now look forward to welcoming the 2018 bidders to FEI Headquarters next month.”

Four year horse-ride from Beijing to London Olympics ends in heartbreak
16 July 2012
By Sarah Trotter
A RECORD-BREAKING woman who has been riding a horse from one Olympic Games to another for four years has seen her Greenwich welcome party shattered.
Megan Lewis has faced deserts, mountains, broken ribs and knackered horses in her 8,000 mile charity trek spanning 13 countries from Beijing to London.
But as she approaches her final destination she is saddled with a huge problem.
After dreaming of a welcome party at Shooters Hill's equestrian resource centre, she has been refused entry by Greenwich Council on health and safety grounds as the site is still being built.
She will however be welcomed by Bexley and Bromley councils on her way to Greenwich as she visits Orpington's Chelsfield Equestrian Centre and Bexley's Mount Mascal Stables ahead of the Olympic torch relay celebrations.
The 63-year-old said: "It is almost a bit of an anti-climax...

Mongolia: B.C. woman enters world’s toughest horse race

An ‘average ranch girl from Canada’ to participate in gruelling 10-day Mongol Derby
Riding 1,000 kilometres through the mountainous terrain of Mongolia in what is considered the longest, toughest horse race in the world may sound like torture to many people, but to Vancouver Island resident Katherine Friedley, it sounds like the adventure of a lifetime.
The 46-year-old horsewoman will represent Canada as one of 35 international competitors in a 10-day race through the Mongolian steppe known as the Mongol Derby, beginning Aug. 10. The race follows Genghis Khan’s pony express postal system route.
“Everyone I’ve talked to about this has been so excited for me. It sometimes blows me away that here I am, just your ordinary Canadian woman, off to Mongolia,” Friedley said.
Friedley now lives near Saanich, but she grew up on her family’s cattle ranch in Alberta, near the eastern slopes of the Rockies. In other words, Friedley – who has chosen the nickname Outlaw Kate for the derby – is no stranger to long days in the saddle.
She credits her father, who continues to run the family’s cattle operation at age 88, with her wealth of horse knowledge and her deep respect for the powerful animals.
But she’s still nervous about what’s in store.
“When I first signed up for the race, I did it on gut instinct alone. I know I can compete and I have the utmost faith in my capabilities not only as a rider, but as a navigator, and as a closet survivalist.
“However, once I began checking out my fellow competitors I began to realize that I am in it with the big boys. There are people who are professional equestrians, experienced endurance riders … I am just an average ranch girl from Canada...”

Great Britain: Nicky sets fast Boconnoc pace on Silver Zourra
Thisiscornwall.co.uk - Full Article
July 13 2012
Over the past few weeks, the heavy rainfall has caused the cancellation of many sporting events, including endurance rides.
Fortunately for local riders, the Boconnoc Estate, near Lostwithiel in Cornwall, escaped the worst of the weather and its annual endurance ride was able to go ahead last Sunday on a largely sunny day.
The going, particularly in the woods, was muddy and slippery in places but that did not stop Nicky Sherry, of St Breward, on her grey Arab mare Silver Zourra, from winning the 80km (50 miles) ER and the Boconnoc Bowl, at an average speed of 18.22kph – not far off the course record.
Nicky finished so far in front of the other competitors that her arrival at the finish took officials by surprise. Fortunately the timekeepers were there to record her arrival time.
Finishing second was Shannon Smith on her Thoroughbred cross pony Bomber at a speed of 16.91kph. This is the third time that Bomber has come second in the Boconnoc ER, an exceptional record against much larger horses.
Third was Annie Joppe on Oision's Wizard, at a speed of 16.73kph and fourth was last year's winner Firebird, owned by Lesley Nott and ridden this year by daughter Emily, at 16.45kph...

Bahrain: Royal Team put on brave show
Gulf-daily-news.com
July 16, 2012
BAHRAIN'S Royal Endurance Team members had heartbreaking finishes at the recently-organised Endurance Horse Ride in Poland.
All eight Bahraini riders put on a brave show, but were unable to complete this challenging 120-km event, which was divided into four stages - 37km, 37km, 24km, 24km.
The Bahrain team, led by Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, also comprised Yaqoub Yousef, Abdulrahman Al Saad, Salman Isa, Ahmed Abdulla, Abdulrahman Al Zayd, Jaffer Mirza and Raed Mahmood.
The ride was part of the Bahrainis' preparations for the World Championship that will take place in the UK next month.
Shaikh Nasser, meanwhile, said that the Royal Endurance Team was able to prove its presence at the ride during its debut participation in this event.
The Royal Endurance Team members waged a new experience as part of a series of its European tour, pointing out that the objective behind its presence at the Polish ride was not essentially intended to score results even though desirable but participation is worthwhile.
Shaikh Nasser praised the cavaliers for their efforts throughout all laps of the 120-kilometre ride and lauded their excellent performance since their horses are only ordinary horses found in the Kingdom of Bahrain's Royal Endurance Stables.
Shaikh Nasser asserted that the experience in Poland has been very positive and affirmed the Royal Endurance Team's cavaliers capacity to wage endurance races on all sorts of difficult terrains and locations, citing his team's previous positive results on various European terrains, and looked forward to accomplishing great feats during the upcoming event next month in Hungary.

Australia: Colt was worth the wait
Northernstar.com.au - Full Article13 July 2012
JUST as champion mare, Refleex, won prestigious endurance races by pacing herself, she also waited a long time to give birth to her first foal.
On Wednesday, 18-year-old Refleex had a colt, Flex-X, several weeks prematurely and caught horse breeders, Joyce Corbett and Steve Clibborn of Jiggi, by surprise.
"I went up to check the cows yesterday (Wednesday) and I was doing a head-count on them, standing in the back of the ute," Mr Clibborn recalled.
"Then I thought, 'Hang on, I've got too many calves'.
"It was quite a big thing because if you leave a foal in a paddock with geldings, like these two, they'll kill it because they're very dominant."
Mr Clibborn and Ms Corbett previously tried to breed Refleex but failed and the retired champion is now considered old to be having her first foal.
However, Ms Corbett said it was symbolic of the champion's nature.
"She is old to be foaling but she has always been an endurance horse," Ms Corbett said.
Horse breeders usually pay for a stallion to impregnate their mares, but Refleex received "a free service" from Eastwinds Axiltation, a top breeding stallion from Maclean, because she is so highly regarded.
In 2004, Refleex became the only non-professional horse to have won the Tom Quilty Cup, a 160 km-long South Australian endurance race...

Great Britain: Lauren lifts young rider endurance national title
Thisiscornwall.co.uk - Full Article
July 6 2012
Up-and-coming young endurance rider, Lauren Mills from Dorset, has won the 2012 Young Rider Endurance National Championships.
In a tough competition, 18-year-old Lauren raced around the 80km course with an average speed of 22.18kmph on her grey Arab Oakleaze Farm Czarko to take victory. The championships were held at Kings Forest, near Bury St Edmunds, at the weekend.
Lauren has owned Oakleaze Farm Czarko for nearly two years and the pair have won all five of their 80km starts. Lauren said: "I am so pleased with him and absolutely loved riding round the course. Czarko is so spirited he just won't let any horses past him." Lauren, from Bransgore near Christchurch, first competed in endurance aged 12 on her New Forest pony. She then rode her mother's Arab in a few competitions before Czarko arrived.
The Young Rider National Championships was the first FEI (international) ride the pair have taken part in and they plan to compete in a 2 day 160km ride in August and then are aiming at the ultimate endurance goal next year – a one-day 160km ride. Lauren said: "I am hoping if all goes well to get on to the young rider squad next year and compete for a place on the British Young Rider team..."

2012 WEC: Ride and Venue Information

Beating the previous 2012 World Equestrian Endurance
Colleagues and members of the board of Audee, Sofia Fernandez Amaya Danvila and Pio Olascoaga share with us a comprehensive report, with interesting and useful data for our selection
We are told that the "venue" venue where the pits and the vet gate, is located in Euston Park, about 170-200 km approx. London, 30 minutes from Newmarket and Thetford 5 km (small town with all services).
The boxes, Equal to any international event, canvas roof and wooden walls, typical prefabricated boxes located in an enclosed park, very well defined and with good security.
As for the Vet Gate, The dimensions are similar to the UAE and the operation is similar, though less infrastructure and shelter canopies for teams. Trot lines of grass, is used for chip necklace times and making electronic pulse is displayed on screens at the end of the trot line, (the company which is Gmax).
The track is very technical, and locked, with many circles, curves and turns on turns. This well identified with arrows but requires a high concentration by the rider for not taking the wrong path. Importantly, the roads are mostly narrow, have a width that enables only two horses running in parallel, and in some only one.
The ground is mostly soft, divided it into grass, wet dirt roads that may form little or a lot of mud, roads with some loose stones, crosses and asphalt roads (with option to go through the grass), several creeks crossing with inlet and outlet mud and shallow, forest trails. By estimate would be a higher percentage of grass and dirt roads, very similar to the field of Uruguayan stays.
The weather is very changeable, there is a high chance of rain and cold, it's beyond summer. If it rains, the track becomes very slippery, and increases the mud. Riders are advised to bring a change of clothes to change in case. The support posts are very easy and accessible, often repeating the same and are very well marked.
On transport: An option (highly recommended) is to rent cars online in advance to be picked up at the airport of London Heathrow. The advantages are that there is a shuttle bus (shuttle service) that lead to store cars at the airport. In addition, the exit to the highway that will lead to Newmarket and Euston Park is quite simple. It gets there in 1hr 45 min. (Newmarket). It is recommended to the GPS service, whether renting or taking the landlady yourself with maps of Europe. For more information: Europcar.co.uk , alamo.co.uk , nationalcar.co.uk
Regarding transportation of horses, we have a truck for six horses which in turn has amenities for everyone on the team, as a living room off to the riders, bathroom and an awning that is installed outside. It will serve to transport the horses from the stables to the Vet Gate and race day will be available for the Uruguay team
Accommodation is a sensitive issue because of the limited supply of hotels and / or houses to rent and because the park around there are no large cities, but very small towns and villages. After several tours throughout the area reserved the last rooms of hotels Thetsford (the nearest town). Another option is to rent houses for 6 or 8 in a resort called "Center Park" which is 15 minutes drive from the park. Within the complex there are restaurants, Starbucks, various activities, pools, and is within a forest.
In terms of costs approx:
Hotels (B & B) - 100 pounds (double)
Homes Center Parc-60 pounds p / person.
For accommodation for grooms, can be considered a Bed & Breakfast in Thetford, (and reserved 3/4 in case: 2 doubles and 1 triple), where they have breakfast included, a living room, dining room and kitchen which is accessible at all times. The cost per person is 25 pounds per person.
Following the good news for the Uruguayan horses endurance, Mr. Pio Olascoaga Amaya got free accommodation in a stable of Sheik Hamdan, equipped with beds, green grass bales and free. As we can facilitate the ration procedures but they do not have in stock. The barn also provides us with an English blacksmith working in the barn and work with horses and horse racing enduro, which may also be available on race day. Other services to be used: training track and grass land, 2 km circuit. Training track by track road that runs Accommodation for 1 or 2 grooms.Cama, bales, grass paddocks Walker Other veterinary services and spa with free prior request for deposit Boxes
Note that this large study do not mean market cost, or for members or for Audee

Endurancegb.co.uk18th June 2012
Endurance GB Elite squad members Christine Yeoman and Nikki Malcolm have both recently been out to strengthen their chances of team selection for the Endurance GB team for the 2012 Longines FEI World Endurance Championships at Euston Park near Thetford on the 25th August.
The 2011 National Endurance Champion, Nikki Malcolm (28) from Whitcombe in Dorset has qualified a second horse to be eligible to take part World Championships. Nikki took 4th place in the 160km FEI 3* Endurance Ride at Euston Park near Thetford recently with L R Bold Greyson.

South Africa: How to ride FAURESMITH…

How to Ride Fauresmith… for the First-timer
Next week a horde of horse and riders will be setting off on a three-day ride totalling 201km… This is the notorious Fauresmith National ride – the highlight of the South African endurance calendar! Not too onerous as endurance rides go, and yet, so difficult to complete for many people. Is Fauresmith an elusive goal for you? Is this your first time attempting it?
As old hands in our Province we offer advice to the newbies on our teams every year. Tips on what to do and what not to do. Sometimes they take our advice and sometimes they ignore it, but all the riders end up wiser on Thursday afternoon than they were on Tuesday morning. There’s no replacement for experience!
Fauresmith is a unique event in endurance. It has challenges different from the ultra-distance rides; one-day 100 milers such as the fabled Hofmeyr. It has different challenges from the speedy outright races between elite Namibian and South African teams over 120km. It is entirely different from the happy-go-lucky 80 km pre-rides done by the majority of endurance riders who just take part for the sheer enjoyment.
There are factors that make Fauresmith mad and bad compared to your local club ride.
Firstly, the sheer numbers. There will be about 400 horses concentrated at this venue. Unlike shows, most of them will not be stowed away in the stables, rather, all of them will be under saddle or on the field preparing to go. Add to that hundreds of vehicles and thousands of people. It can get a bit out of hand.
Secondly, the excitement. For many riders, arriving at Fauresmith is the realisation of a dream. There is a sparkle in their eyes and they communicate this excitement to their horses, who are already amazed to see so many colourfully attired horses around them. Adrenaline courses through their veins.
Third, the horses are fit and fed to run fast. They are not easy to control.
Fourth, there are a lot of newbies every year. Some are relatively new in endurance and lacking in the level-headed common sense that only develops with experience of dealing with difficult situations. They often have a hard time, but can also create situations that are awkward for the horses and riders around them. Falls by inexperienced riders, tack malfunctions or breakages, can add extra complications as they must be helped.
Fifth, the terrain is tricky in the sense that there are many rocks and loose stones, eroded gullies, holes, fence posts. Fauresmith is not a race track, but the horses want to race.
Lastly, there are three days to get through...

Canada: New event for endurance riders
By Louise Liebenberg Special
Last weekend a sanctioned Endurance Ride took place south of High Prairie. Meghan Payne organized the very first “Payne’s Pulse Down” endurance ride, with rides of 25miles (40 km) and 50 miles (80 km) for the more competitive riders.
For those wanting to participate on a fun ride or have an introduction to endurance riding, a fantastic 12-mile (19.2 km) trail was set out.
Those participating in the fun ride did go through the same process as the riders in the competitive event, so all vet checks, pulse measurements, departing times where adhered to, in order for new riders to get a feel for what this equine sport entails.
Endurance riding on the American continents has its history dating back to the early 1900s, where cavalry horses were tested on fitness, stamina and endurance. The test required the horse and rider to go on a five-day, 300-mile ride. In the 1950s it became a civilian sport.
In 1978 the Federation Equestre Internationale (FEI), the international governing body for World and Olympic equestrian events, recognized endurance riding as an international sport. Endurance riding and competitions are held in Europe, Asia, and the American continents incorporating over 49 countries worldwide.
Since the early days the distance and time has been reduced, with most competitions having a maximum distance of 100 miles (160 km) a day. The teams are regularly vet checked along the way to ensure that the horse is fitand has the stamina to continue on the way. Mandatory breaks and vet checks are part and parcel of the sport.
The trails in High Prairie led next to grain fields, through bush, had a number of river crossings, up some steeper banks, along open fields and through cattle pastures. The horses had to contend with a whole variety of trails which made the ride interesting to participate in...

Great Britain: Euston Park hosts final qualifiers for Longines FEI World Endurance Championships 2012
24 June 2012
Sh Rashid bin Dalmook Al Maktoum and Kurajong Concorde from the UAE headed a strong field to win the penultimate qualifier for the Longines FEI World Endurance Championships (25th August 2012) at Euston Park, near Newmarket, Suffolk, UK.
The pair completed the FEI CEI 3* 160km competition over August’s World Championship course in a ride time of 7hr30min14sec at an average speed of 21.32km/hr.
They won by a nose after a tight finish with Mohd Ahmad Al Subose and Kedjari Des Serres (UAE) in second place. Compatriot Mohd Saeed Mohd Al Faresi and Ainhoa Tijmili crossed the line six minutes later.
A total of 28 combinations took part in Sunday’s 160km qualifier run over the Euston Park course in the build-up to the Longines FEI World Endurance Championships.
Organised by Janah Management, Sunday’s programme featured a CEI 3* 160 km, CEI 2* 120km, a CEI 2* YR 120km and a CEI 1* 80km, with classes on Monday including a CEI 3* 160km and CEI 2* 120km.
The ride was completed in tough conditions with strong winds and bursts of heavy rain affecting the going.
As the penultimate qualifying ride for the World Championships ahead of the deadline on 26th June, the event attracted riders from around the globe.
Having aimed to qualify ZT Richshakfy for a place on the British team, Susan Hawes sadly opted to withdraw on course on the fourth loop putting paid to her chances of qualifying for a place on the championship team in August.
"It’s a shame but he was not feeling quite right so it wasn't worth continuing - he's only 11 and there'll be another day. This course is really challenging and it will find out any niggles. I have huge respect for the horses that are out in front and still going strong - they are awesome," she said.
The other British contender Melanie Davison and CS Khan contesting their first 160km had aimed for a steady completion but also withdrew at the fourth vetgate. “This is definitely a championship course and very technical - one minute you are in sand and the next mud and then harder tracks which means you really have to concentrate - it is tricky."
The UAE’s Saeed Ahmed Murad Al Khattal riding the Al Aasfa Stables-trained Glendaar Greystar captured the CEI 2* 120km class in fine style having led all the way from the first vetgate. The duo’s time of 5hr43min57sec was completed with a consistent performance across all five loops at an average speed of 21.28km/hr.
They were chased home by fellow UAE riders Saeed Saqr Mohd Qabir Al Ameri with Saxon of Bedain and Spain’s Nuria Serrabasa Fabre and Nasik Des Fabries.
Chris Wray, riding his first 120km with Takwenya was among four British contenders in this class finishing in 12th place behind fellow Briton Caroline Cowley with Summer Mistral.
His crew Georgina Bull said: “Takwenya only did her first 80km ride back in March and won it so we felt she was ready to do a 120km class.”
Georgina the British team riders’ osteopath said Chris, who bred the nine year old palomino, is aiming to get the horse onto the elite squad by 2014.
Georgina added: “The wet weather did not bother them. Chris found the going deep in places but just pushed on when he could and slowed down where necessary. We used less water than we would on a hot day and mostly rugged up to keep her warm after the vet gate.”
Saeed Mod Khalifa Al Mehairi of the UAE and Gem El Gem took the top slot in the CEI 2** YR 120km at an average speed of 21.28km/hr
The 14th running of the FEI World Endurance Championships will see around 160 riders from up to 40 countries lining up for the contest around the deceptive Euston Park track.
Ian Williams, FEI Non-Olympic Sports Director, said: “This was the third event held as part of the preparations for the Longines FEI World Endurance Championship.
“Despite the difficult weather conditions, the vetgate stood up to the test and ran incredibly well as did the course. The electronic timing system had its final live test and lived up to all expectations.
“Representatives from many nations had taken this opportunity to make their final recce of the course and venue and I can only believe that they found it to be a true championship test and will be returning home excited about beginning their countdown to the main event in August.”
Alongside title sponsor Longines, the Championships has the support of Dubai industry giants, Meydan and Emaar Properties as additional supporters.
With around 1000 participants, riders, crew and officials, the championship will have a significant economic impact on the area around Euston Park and the Newmarket area during the build-up and immediately post competition.

Hungary has withdrawn from the bidding process to stage the FEI World Equestrian Games in 2018.
Its capital Budapest had been named as one of the five 2018 bid cities earlier this month, but in a letter to FEI Secretary General Ingmar De Vos this week, the President of the Hungarian National Federation Vilmos Lázár confirmed that the Hungarian bid has now been withdrawn.
In the letter Lázár stated that the Hungarian Federation’s Board had made the decision to withdraw the Budapest bid as there were two candidates from the same region. Hungary’s immediate neighbour, Austria, is also one of the official candidates to host the FEI World Equestrian Games in 2018.
Lázár said that his Board hoped that the withdrawal of the Hungarian bid would enhance the chances of Austria staging the Games in 2018.
“Of course we are sad to lose the Hungarian bid for 2018,” FEI Secretary General Ingmar De Vos said, “but we respect the National Federation’s decision and admire its generous support of the neighbouring bid from Austria. We still have four very strong candidates in the mix and it will be a very exciting bidding process. We very much look forward to welcoming them all to FEI Headquarters next month...”

Australia: Teenager and $200 horse headed to World Endurance Championship
Pozible.comJune 20 2012
WHO ARE TALEA & BLAKE'S HEAVEN BOMBORA?
In January 2002 Fia Hasko-Stewart purchased an unwanted Arabian yearling for $200 from a friend. All other buyers had ignored him. Ten years later the horse, Blake’s Heaven Bombora, is one of Australia’s top endurance horses.
It has been a long journey. Endurance is a grueling sport where each competitor rides one horse over long distances (minimum 80kms, up to 160kms in one day). The fastest horse home is the winner, but riders must balance speed with the need to manage their horses’ welfare, as strict vet checks are completed at the start, middle and end of the ride. If the horse fails any vet check, the rider is eliminated.
Talea Haskow-Stewart and Bombora have come up through the ranks of endurance through thousands of hours in the saddle and many thousands of kilometres in training and competition in all conditions - in the pre-dawn dark; the wind, the rain and cold; or blazing heat. They have galloped along forest trails and picked their way down treacherous cliffs, and together they have become a top team.

THE WORLD ENDURANCE CHAMPIONSHIPS.
Now, after performing outstandingly in qualifying events, Talea and Bombora have been chosen to represent Australia at the highest level– the World Endurance Championships to be held in the UK in August. See http://www.eustonparkendurance.co.uk/ for more information on the event.

WHY TALEA & BH BOMBORA NEED YOUR HELP.
Although in negotiation, endurance riding is not yet in the Olympics and this means there is no government funding for the Australian team. Return airfares for Bombora are $35,000, and estimated total costs for the trip are around $50,000.
Talea isn’t part of a professional endurance business. She’s just a young lady with a lot of passion. Talea has repeatedly declined offers to sell Bombora to Arab sheiks (for whom endurance is as important as thoroughbred racing), although his worth is in six figures.
To allow Talea to bring her best friend home from the UK, she needs help. Fia and Talea are currently seeking corporate sponsorship, but donations from family, friends, Endurance Riders, and people who are passionate about seeing others realise their dreams, will help make this trip a reality and bring Bombora home.
A Sydney filmmaker, Adeline Gibson, is also traveling with Talea to the WEC and filming a documentary about Talea, BH Bombora & the Aussie Team. Donations of $60 or more will receive a copy of the final film, so you can go on the journey with them.
