Aust trail a long day's journey into night

Canberratimes.com.au - Full Article John Thistleton
May 3, 2012

On a cold and rainy morning nothing stands as stoic as horses having their blankets lifted from their warm backs on the Bicentennial National Trail.

Steamy warmth envelopes Sam Alexander on the outskirts of Canberra as he tightens a girth strap and steels himself for a wet spongy saddle.

On average, only three people a year finish the 5330-kilometre journey he's on, from one end of eastern Australia to the other.

This is the 24-year-old medical student's first break from text books since high school. Three weeks before getting into the saddle he broke in two bay geldings, Ranger and Laddie who are on the ride with his chestnut mare Marda. Moonlit trails and snowy peaks have led them through lean times in the high country. So they're on a break near Canberra where the horses are regaining weight in a lush paddock at Hall.

Mr Alexander says managing them and understanding their psychology are his biggest challenge.

In brumby country he discovered Marda was in season and ready to push her luck with his portable electric fencing... Read more here:

FEI: Proposed Rule Changes for Endurance

Horse-canada.com

May 2 2012
by FEI

The Endurance Round Table session, which shared the final morning of the FEI Sports Forum with the Eventing Round Table, attracted representatives of National Federations (NFs) and veterinarians for discussion on proposed rule changes that will be presented to the FEI General Assembly 2012 in November. Various proposals made by the FEI Endurance Committee were debated before the meeting was opened up for general discussion.

The FEI Technical Committee has undertaken a full review of the present rules for Endurance Riding in the context of the rapid expansion of the discipline worldwide. The major rules changes, dealing with qualification, entries and the composition of championship teams, all received unanimous support from the participants.

Speaking after the session, FEI Director Non-Olympic Sports Ian Williams said: “to change the fundamentals of entries, qualifications and teams is a fantastic step forward.”

The changes involved the introduction of an Elite status for Junior, Young and Senior Athletes, the possibility of bringing spare horses to competitions, and adopting a format that would allow all six members of a squad to contribute to the final team result with the best three scores counting.

Under the proposed new rule, to achieve Junior/Young Rider Elite Athlete Status, athletes must have successfully completed a minimum of 10 CEI 2* 120km events or higher. To maintain this status, they must successfully complete at least one CEI 120km or higher event within every successive 24 months.

Senior Elite Athlete status would be awarded to riders who successfully complete a minimum of 10 CEI 3* 160km events or higher. To maintain Senior Elite Athlete status, Athletes must successfully complete at least one CEI 160 km within every successive 24 months.

FEI Veterinary Delegate Frederic Barrelet (SUI) suggested that, apart from these qualification criteria, any disciplinary action within the 24-month status-maintaining period should be taken into account. The suggestion was taken on board by the Committee.

There was also strong support for changes in the rules relating to establishing the field of play, and the creation of the role of course designer. This new role will have a direct bearing on the level of safety and challenge of the courses.

The FEI Technical Committee also sought feedback on the final horse inspection and whether to change it to make it more spectator friendly.

FEI Endurance Committee Brian Sheehan (AUS) was adamant that horse welfare was not negotiable. “We can’t put public adulation before horse welfare or we can throw our rule book away,” he said. “We should think of ways to make the inspection easier for spectators to understand but we will never compromise our welfare standards.”

The welfare perspective was also to the fore when former Endurance Committee member Jean-Louis Leclerc (FRA) asked for information about what was being done to address the incident of fractures in competition.

Fred Barrelet, one of the FEI’s most senior and experienced 4* vets and head of Veterinary Services for the upcoming FEI World Endurance Championships in Euston Park (GBR), responded to the question. “It is necessary to have assessment and understanding of when and where injuries occur,” he said. “We can then know where the problems are and how they should be addressed. If the rules as they stand are implemented correctly, I am confident that incidents of career limiting and career ending injuries can be reduced back to a low level.”

Ian Williams confirmed that the FEI has been looking into both the causes and prevention of these types of injuries “to ensure that the welfare of the horse is absolutely the central pillar of endurance in the future”. He stated that there is an ongoing review in FEI Headquarters, compiling facts and figures to create the safest possible environment for Endurance horses.

Mr Barrelet also reported that Annamaria Nagy (HUN), based at the Animal Health Trust in Newmarket (GBR), is currently doing a PhD on orthopaedic injury rates in Endurance horses globally. This data will also play an important role in the FEI study.

In his wrap-up of the key discussion points, Ian Williams summarised, “The FEI is absolutely aware of the issues that this discipline faces and the rule changes have addressed what issues we can, but we are looking for more information to create a safe environment for our horses to perform in Endurance.”

Endurance Committee chair Ruth Carlson brought the meeting to a close. “Please know that it’s not just in a forum like this that we welcome input,” she said. “If you have a concern, a suggestion, a problem, we want to hear about it. Please get in touch with us. We will take everything seriously and get back to everyone.”

Endurance horse fractures under scrutiny

The incidence of fractures in endurance horses was among the topics discussed at the Endurance Round Table session on the final day of the FEI Sports Forum yesterday in Lausanne, Switzerland.

The subject was raised by former Endurance Committee member Jean-Louis Leclerc (France), who asked what was being done to address the issue.

FEI Director Non-Olympic Sports Ian Williams confirmed that the FEI has been looking into both the causes and prevention of these types of injuries “to ensure that the welfare of the horse is absolutely the central pillar of endurance in the future”.

Goodbye to the friends and family and "hello" South Africa. The Tri Nation's Championship is due to happen on May 18th in the Free State of South Africa. I shall be representing Great Britain as an individualist at this prestigious event, riding one of the horse's from the Perseverance Stud.

I left Britain on 16th April on plane no.1 from Gatwick to Istanbul. However, my flight had a 2 hour delay due to another aircraft having to make an emergency landing at Gatwick. Finally aboard plane no.1 to Istanbul, where upon landing I made a dash through Istanbul airport to my 2nd plane only to find out that also had an hour and half delay. Eventually time ticked by and I was on plane no.2 to Johannesburg. On landing in Johannesburg I had exactly half an hour to disembark the plane, get through passport control, collect my luggage, dash to the other side of the airport to check in and catch my plane. No I never made it in time...

Australia: Horse riders reject Green claims

ABC.net.au - Full Article

Posted April 30, 2012

Horse riders have rejected claims that allowing the activity in more national parks in south east New South Wales will devastate the land.

The Greens have slammed the State Government's draft strategy for horse riding in national parks and reserves.

The party says the plan will open up parts of the Wadbilliga and Kosciuszko National Parks to riding, which could spread weeds and damage the landscape.

Endurance rider Fiona Mellor is part of a state advisory council exploring the issue, and says the impacts of horses are minimal.

"We've seen a gradual turnaround in attitude, and a realisation that the so called impacts from horse riders are negligible," she said.

Two Saudi showjumpers face Olympic ban

Horseandhound.co.uk - Full Article

Charlotte White, H&H deputy news editor
27 April, 2012

Two top Saudi showjumpers face being barred from the London Olympics after being accused of using a banned drug on their horses.

Sydney Olympic bronze medallist Khaled Addulaziz Al Eid’s horse Vanhoeve tested positive for phenylbutazone (bute) and oxyphenbutazone at the CSI*** in Riyadh (30 November-3 December 2011).

And Abdullah Al Sharbatly’s ride, Lobster 43, tested positive for the same substances at the CSI*** in Al Ain (9-11 February).

Al Sharbatly won silver at the 2010 World Equestrian Games in Kentucky and both riders were likely to be on the Saudi team for London.

The substances are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and deemed controlled medications under international rules.

The riders appeared before an FEI tribunal on 18 and 19 April, confirmed FEI general counsel Liza Lazarus.

She said tribunal decisions are “generally issued within 30 days of the hearing, but may take longer”.

Of 15 positive dope cases currently being investigated by the FEI, nine involve horses from Arab states — seven in endurance...

Great Britain: Cockley-Adams' double victory

Thisisgloucestershire.co.uk

SEVENHAMPTON endurance rider Janice Cockley-Adams has started the season with two wins in the UK's first two race rides.

An impressive turn of speed saw her head a thrilling gallop for the finish to take the honours in Dorchester's Jubilee Ride, with a winning margin of just one second. The 77km (48 miles) ride was the first race of the 2012 endurance riding season and a perfect sharpener for the UK's first international fixture.

This was the FEI Kings Forest event in Suffolk, where Cockley-Adams was again riding her nine-year-old Arabian mare Serabitibi in the FEI 2 star 120km (75 miles) against a field of 20, including many of the top riders in the country.

"This was Serabitibi's first competition at this distance, so our objective was to secure a completion," she said.

"She rode really strongly and I was delighted with her."

Cockley-Adams' next outing will be at the FEI event in Nottinghamshire on Roxane du Bout du Monde.

Roxane and Janice are shortlisted for the GB team at this year's Endurance World Championships, due to be held in England in August.

Members of the Endurance World Class Start and Potential squad (WCSPS) and Young Rider squad will be competing in the FEI2* 120km ride at Mont le Soie in Belgium on the 28th April.

Six members from the WCSPS squad have been selected for the Senior 120km ride in Mont le Soie after good results in the selection ride at Kings Forest last Month. Representing Great Britain are, Caroline Cowley, Jane Greatorex, Alison House, Sue Rich, Rebecca Kinnarney and Jo Malcolm.

Endurance GB, Chair of International, Emma Miller said, "Riders on the WCSPS are there to gain experience, we are looking for them to become qualified for the elite squad and be in contention for a team place in the next few years. Expeditions such as this are designed to give the riders international experience, qualifications for elite level competition and access to the top vets and farriers".

The Young Riders travelling to Belgium to compete as individuals in the Young Riders FEI 2* 120km are, Kate Atkinson, Brett Corcoran, James Dickinson and Louise Rich. Carri-Ann Dark will be taking on the FEI 3* 160km class. This ride is being used as a pre-run for the Endurance Young Rider European Championships to be held in Mont le Soie on the 8th September.

Young Rider Chef d'Equipe, Helen Boston said, "This will be a fact finding expedition ahead of the Europeans in September. We don't want to jeopardise the horses over what is a tough course at this stage so the emphasis is for the riders to complete the course. This year we have a really strong group of Young Riders and we have a good pool of people to select the final team from. This will be the first time competing abroad for Brett and James and they hope to learn a great deal from the experience. Our main goal for this year is for a team medal in September, anything else is a bonus".

British Elite squad member, Tricia Hirst is also competing in the FEI 2* 120km class at Mont le Soie with Valcq Diamond Sparkle.

Australia: In National Squad

Colliemail.com.au - Full Article

RAELENE HESTON
26 Apr, 2012 10:54 AM

“HE’S a tough little horse,” remarked one official, as 13-year-old Arab stallion West Coast Acheron strolled past the finishing line after a 160-kilometre trek through bushland south-east of Collie. His journey had started shortly after a midnight on Friday, following a vet check, and ended between 4.30 and 5pm on Saturday.

The little chestnut had not raised a sweat at the end of his journey around the Collie racecourse and through the bush.

He had been cantering towards the finish when his rider, Norbert Radney, slowed him to a walk.

Another rider explained that coming in quietly would lower his heart rate and help cool him down before the compulsory vet check.

The cool wind would also help, she added.

After the vet check, there were hugs all around when the WA Endurance Riders’ Association honorary veterinarian, Dr Anne Barnes of Murdoch University, announced Acheron and Dr Radney had qualified for the Australian squad to contest the Senior World Endurance Championships at Euston Park near Newmarket in England during August.

Even before Acheron and Dr Radney finished the event, Dr Barnes said they were well within qualifying time so there was no need for Dr Radney to push his mount...

Australia: Endurance Carnival - Toorbul

The 2012 Endurance Carnival will be held on 5, 6, & 7 of May, 2012 at Toorbul, Queensland. It will be a low key event in comparison to the Endurance Festival 2011 due to a very limited number of helpers.

We will endeavour for the weekend to be rewarding and enjoyable for all. Some competitors want to qualify for the 2013 Queensland Quilty, others want to qualify and vie for selection to the World Championships at Euston Park 2012, but for most it's the opportunity to enjoy a day in the saddle with a special horse at your chosen distance.

We look forward to welcoming you.

South Africa: It's in the Blood!

Perseveranceendurancehorses Blog

24 April 2012

It was a super successful weekend at the OVK Endurance Challenge for the team from Perseverance Arabian & Endurance Horses. Seven horses were entered, with five riders and four grooms, and six finished, with two 3rd places, one 2nd place and one 1st place!

This year, the ride – hosted by the Lormar stud and sponsored by OVK – was held over two days, with 80km, 120km and stepladder distances on both days. The ride was well attended with around seventy entries, including TV stars Barry Armitage and Joe Dawson, from SABC3′s THE RIDE. Barry and Joe were riding Lormar horses in their bid to qualify to enter the Fauresmith 201km national ride in July.

The highlight of Friday the 13th was a racing finish between father & son pair, Pieter & Lourens Marais in the 80km distance! Both were riding in the Heavyweight category, and shared the honours at the end, with Pieter taking 1st place, and Lourens taking Best Condition.

For Team PSV, Ashley Gower and PSV Mauser – standing at number 3 on the ERASA horse rankings – placed 3rd Young Rider in the 80km, while Francois Seegers rode PSV Nile out of novice with a good 80km stepladder. To round the day off for Perseverance, work experience rider Joy Webster did a 60km stepladder on PSV Medina.

On Saturday, third cousins Laura Seegers and Wesley Hayes dashed around the 80km together in the fastest time of the weekend. Wesley also breeds Arabians, and has the Olford Stud in Queenstown… it must be in the bloodline!

Laura was riding PSV Mabruk – currently at number 2 on the ERASA overall horse rankings – and finished in a time of 4h03min. Laura and Wesley crossed the line together with Laura winning Standardweights and Wesley winning Heavyweights. Mabruk trotted off with the Best Condition for that ride AND the Best of the Best award for the weekend’s events!

In his second 80km of the weekend, Ashley Gower and PSV Liberty took 3rd place Young Rider, and Donalyn Hennessey on PSV Ibis came 2nd in the Standardweights.

The 1st Lightweight place in the 80km was taken by Baba Sintu on Alicedale Hidalgo, while 1st and 2nd places in the Young Rider category went to sisters Jenna and Kirsty Masterson from the Hofmeyr club. It was another thrilling finish to the 120km, where Young Rider Rory Rous was chasing fellow YR Ninine Erasmus, and caught up with her on the last leg to sccop 1st place and Best Condition.

Sharp eyes may have spotted that Mauser is back in competition...

Mongolia: Globetrotting - Getting Under the Skin

Globetrotting1.wordpress.com - Full Article

April 23 2012

The girl’s cheeks are flushed beetroot red, her half moon eyes bright with anticipation as her wiry bay pony jigs around in a circle. Shadows of her horse’s ribs are visible beneath the make-shift saddle, a stirrup-less foam pad that is secured by a rawhide girth strap. The number nine is pinned to her back and chest. She is one of 20 child jockeys that will be competing in the Naadam Festival race held in a remote northern region of Mongolia. The child jockeys are stone faced with concentration as they trot their dread-locked, wild-eyed ponies past the group of onlookers.

The children start to sing in mid-trot. Their high-pitched voices echo across the lonely steppe. Our interpreter Molor explains, “they’re worshipping their sky father and giving thanks to the horse.” It’s a haunting, high-pitched chorus that ebbs and flows with intensity as they amble past.

My husband, our two good friends and I were at the beginning of a 19-day horse-riding adventure, where we trekked deep within the remote Darhat Valley, only accessible by horse, reindeer or foot. We were in search of the Tssatan people while getting a taste of a nomad’s life. To arrive in time to see Naadam festivities we jumped on an overnight train, hitched a ride on a regional flight and spent half a day in a Russian army van to reach the windswept town of Khatgal. It’s the frontier town to Lake Khovsgol National Park, the deepest lake in central Asia.

Naadam is a traditional type of festival in Mongolia held in country towns like Khatgal during the midsummer holidays. Translated as ‘the three games of men’, it includes Mongolian wrestling, horse racing and archery.

The dust cloud on the steppe signified that the 25-kilometre horse race had begun...

Great Britain: Cheshire Cheese Grin for Horse Riders

Cheshireeast.gov.uk

April 18, 2012

The Cheshire Cheese Loop – the very first long distance horse ride in Cheshire East – is now open to the public. Named Laureen’s Ride, the route runs through the heart of Cheshire East and is ideal for horse riders with friends or family on bikes.

The route is located to the South East of Knutsford, around the parishes of Over Peover, Chelford and Ollerton. Councillor Rod Menlove, Cabinet member with responsibility for environmental services, said: “Cheshire East Council is delighted to have been part of this project to improve the environment for people who are eager to get outside and enjoy the Cheshire countryside.

“As part of the project, Cheshire East Council has ensured the route is safe and well sign-posted, so that visitors can enjoy a relaxed trek through the beautiful countryside.”

The Cheshire Cheese Loop passes through pretty countryside with green hedged fields and shady trees created for Cheshire dairy cattle.

There are also magnificent country estates to see, such as 16th century Peover Hall, Colshaw Hall and New Hall, which was used by General George S. Patton during the Second World War.

The route is signposted on roads and way-marked on bridleways and byways. There are also maps and a talk-around service to guide the rider around the 27km (17-mile route). A leaflet is also available, which lists horse-friendly pub stops, accommodation and equestrian services close-by.

Here is what some riders have to say about the route:

“Lovely country lanes and plenty of canter opportunities”

“Very enjoyable, easy to follow ride, through pretty countryside over a variety of terrain providing interest for both horse and rider”.

Laureen’s Ride was developed by North Cheshire Riders in partnership with Cheshire East Council, with funding from the British Equestrian Federation, British Horse Society and local riding groups.

The Cheshire Cheese Loop is one of two loops of Laureen's Ride. The second, Heritage Loop, is currently being developed. To find out more about the various horse riding, walking and cycling opportunities, log on to: www.discovercheshire.co.uk.

India’s Indigenous Horses Trot Into Sunset

Littleindia.com - Full Article

India’s ‘native steeds’ are staring at an uncertain, if not calamitous future, just two years ahead of a century since World War I that will commemorate the greatest contribution of horses towards a human enterprise

By Rajat Ghai

For millennia, they have shared the world with their human masters. They have carried their owners in the thick of battle, across grasslands, hills, plains and the highest mountains. But there has never been a more trying time for India’s six indigenous breeds of horses than now.

The Kathiawari horse, the Marwari horse, the Zanskari pony, the Spiti pony, the Bhotia pony and the Manipuri pony are threatened by the loss of genetic purity, say experts.

In January this year the media in Gujarat speculated that there were fewer than 50 purebred Kathiawari horses left.

Warns Satyajit Khachar, a Gujarat-based horse breeder: “If they are not saved now, a stage will come when because of declining numbers, the gene pool will get restricted. Then breeders will resort to inbreeding to preserve the breed’s purity.”

Raghuvendra Singh Dunlod, secretary general of the Indigenous Horse Society of India, a Jaipur-based NGO working towards conserving the six breeds, said: “A horse breed is declared threatened when fewer than 50 breeding mares are left, according to the Brussels-based OIE or World Organization for Animal Health.

“By that yardstick, I don’t think that these six breeds are on the verge of extinction. But some of them, if not all, will slide towards that end if something is not done soon..."

Scotland: Shoes mandatory in horse v human race – for now

Horsetalk.co.nz - Full Article

By Horsetalk.co.nz on Apr 17, 2012

A campaign to allow barefoot horses in the annual Man versus Horse race in Powys, Wales, has failed to persuade organisers to change the rules for this year’s event.

However, the organisers have promised to review the opinions of the equine and veterinary community and carefully consider the question for the 2013 running of the cross-country endurance challenge.

For now, horses entered in the 22-mile race on June 9 must wear metal shoes.

The course is steep and the terrain varied to make the contest as even as possible. Competitors race across farm tracks, footpaths, forestry roads and open moorland, with several short stretches over tarmac. It is very hilly, with a total ascent of 3000ft.

Green Events chairman Lindsay Ketteringham said the terrain covered meant horses must wear shoes...

Scotland: Endurance runners take on horses in new Loch Ness event

BBC.co.uk - Full Article

16 April 2012

Royal Heritage - the story of Jordan's Arab Horses - book

Horsetalk.co.nz
by HRH Princess Alia Al Hussein and Peter Upton
Medina Publishing, July 2011
210 x 218 mm Portrait, 264pp hardcover
RRP £35
ISBN: 978-0-9564170-4-6

Illustrated throughout in colour and b&w with paintings, drawings and a wealth of recent and historical photographs.
Co-authored by HRH Princess Alia, the eldest daughter of the late King Hussein of Jordan, and the artist and author Peter Upton, Royal Heritage tells the story of the Arab horse in Jordan, from the early days of the Bedouin tribes to the 21st century, a story closely associated with the Hashemite family of Jordan, direct descendants of the Prophet.

The account also tells of the Arab Revolt of 1916, in which the Emirs Ali, Abdullah, Faisal and Zeid, with T E Lawrence, drove the Ottomans out of the region, and how some of the Hashemite mares became the foundation stock of the Royal Stud in Jordan. Royal Heritage covers many other adventures including the traumatic events which nearly led to the loss of the Stud's precious mares and describes how, despite these setbacks, the Royal Stud has flourished.

In 1987 Princess Alia, Director of the Royal Stud, organised the first Arab horse show to be held in Arabia entitled 'The Arab Horse at Home'. It was an event which inspired other Arab countries to organise horse shows of their own.

Princess Alia includes many fascinating personal reminiscences: about the horses she holds so dear, the people involved in the Stud through the years, the famous and infamous, family and friends, heads of state and handlers. The work is richly illustrated with paintings, drawings and rare photographs from old archives and private collections, as well as up-to-date portraits of the Stud and its horses.

Peter Upton gives an in-depth account of the horses themselves; the breeding, lineage and preservation of the hugely important Jordanian bloodlines.

A story of legend, romance and war, Royal Heritage tells with passion for the first time the remarkable saga of the Arab horse in Jordan.

Great Britain: A great test of horses’ endurance

Buryfreepress.co.uk

Published on Friday 13 April 2012

THE FIRST big endurance ride on the horse calendar, which was held at King’s Forest near West Stow, has been hailed a success by one of its organisers.

Dianne Luke, who organised the one-day King’s Forest Spring Ride which saw 130 riders take part, said: “It was a brilliant day, and everybody was very happy with it.

“There were no accidents, which is always good, and no horses were injured, which is brilliant.

“It started off quite cold and chilly, but the riders appreciated that because they could get the first 20km under their belt in cool conditions.”

The event had an international flavour, with riders from Hong Kong, Dubai and Switzerland, as well as 50 British competitors.

Wideham Farm Equestrian Centre, which hosted the event, will also stage the National Championships in the summer.

Janice Cockley Adams was the big winner of the day, claiming first place in the class 1 CEI 120km with her horse Serabitibi.

Great Britain: Man v Horse race: 'No horseshoes' plea by rider Sarah Braithwaite

BBC.Co.UK - Full Article

11 April 2012

The organisers of the annual Man versus Horse race in Powys are being urged to change the rules so its four-legged entrants can compete without shoes.

Riders whose horses go "barefoot" claim metal shoes can harm the animals' hooves in the long term.

Sarah Braithwaite, who has written a book about barefoot horses and competes in endurance rides, said rules forcing shod horses were outdated.

A spokesman for the Llanwrtyd Wells event said shoeing protected horses.

Green Events said a committee was meeting on Wednesday night to discuss the issue and would release a statement on Thursday.

The spokesman added: "It has always been a rule of Man versus Horse that horses are to be shod because of the course, and because it's a race rather than an endurance ride..."

France: On Stevenson’s trail: honey and horses in the Cévennes

Theecologist.org - Full Story

Ruth Styles
11th April, 2012

Robert Louis Stevenson’s account of his epic 1879 journey through the Cévennes is one of the high points of travel literature but as Ruth Styles found out, there’s still plenty to be discovered

Travel writing is supposed to be about providing a lyrical introduction to a new place or at the very least, showing a destination in a new light with a quirky angle and new things to do. But how do you do that when said destination is the Cévennes - an area so beautiful, so wild and so historic that the world and its wife have waxed poetic about it? And worse still, when the experience you’re writing about has been done before by the luminous likes of Robert Louis Stevenson?

Stevenson’s 1879 Travels with a Donkey in the Cévennes was one of the first travel tomes to grab the popular imagination and paved the way for the likes of Paul Theroux, Ryszard KapuÅ›ciÅ„ski and William Darymple. His adventures along a 120-mile route through some of the most beautiful countryside on Earth with only Modestine, an entertainingly cantankerous donkey, for company, make for a wonderful read. So here I am, attempting to follow in some very illustrious footsteps, with an equine adventure of my own. Not for me though, the crotchety charms of a donkey (although you still can if you want to); instead, I was in the Cévennes in pursuit of an altogether more thoroughbred beast: the Arab.

As well as being the scene of Stevenson’s 19th century adventure, the Cévennes is also famous for its purebred Arabian horses, from whose bloodlines have sprung some of history’s most famous steeds...

USEF Names Long List for the 2012WEC

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2012

Lexington, KY – Endurance competition heated up this weekend at the Priefert Ranch in Mt. Pleasant, TX as 45 of the nation’s top horses and riders contested the 160km Selection Trial for a spot on the Long List for the 2012 FEI World Endurance Championship. In a close race to the finish Jeremy Reynolds guided A Kutt Above to the win in 8:16:03, narrowly beating out Wendy MacCoubrey and Reach for the Gold (8:16:05) and Becky Hart riding No Repeat (8:16:09).

Over a course designed to replicate the Championship environment, 19 of the 45 starters finished the race. The top finishers were strong all day and recovered well in the vet gates. Reynolds, of San Jose, CA and A Kutt Above (owned by wife Heather Reynolds), also earned the coveted Best Conditioned Award. A Kutt Above has been named to the Long List with both Jeremy and Heather, who finished fourth on Riverwatch. Reach for the Gold was ridden by Proxy Rider MacCoubrey and has been named to the Long List with owner Valerie Kanavy of Fort Valley, VA. Both Kanavy and Hart (San Juan Bautista, CA) will seek a chance to earn another World Endurance Championship title. Kanavy currently has two titles to her name and Hart will seek a fourth, this time with her own No Repeat.

“I am extremely pleased with the horses on the Long List. Three Young Riders completed the race and were named to the Long List, which is so encouraging for the future,” said Chef d’Equipe Emmett Ross. “There are a few disappointing absences to the list, but overall this is a fantastic group of horses and riders who all have potential to be extremely competitive. Race day was hot and humid, but for one boggy area on the course which had to be repeated several times, the course rode well and the times were all good. I am very pleased with all the officials, staff and volunteers. Priefert Ranch was phenomenal and very supportive with both materials and staff.”

Per the selection procedures all 19 finishers were named to the Long List. Ross may name up to three applicant athlete/horse combinations who did not compete in or complete the Selection Trial to the Long List in addition to the top 19. Ross has named John Crandell III with Heraldic and Deborah Reich to the Long List.. Crandell elected to withdraw Heraldic after the horse passed the vet check at gate two, but before going out on loop three with concerns about deficiencies in the horse’s metabolics. Reich, who was unable to compete in the Selection Trial due to injury, has been named to the Long List with DJB Juniper who finished seventh. Riders are listed on the Long List with each horse they applied for consideration with and that finished in the top 20. Please click here for the complete Long List.

The 2012 FEI World Endurance Championship will take place August 25, 2012 in Euston Park, Thetford (GBR). To find out more about the Championship visit: http://www.eustonparkendurance.co.uk/.

Great Britain: Olympic year buzz over Golden Horseshoe endurance ride

Horsetalk.co.nz - Full Article

By Horsetalk.co.nz on Apr 03, 2012 in Just Briefly

The scene is set for Britain’s biggest and most demanding endurance ride as the final preparations are completed for the Exmoor Golden Horseshoe Ride, from May 13 to 15.

The ride, with four competitive classes, is held over the challenging Exmoor terrain, classed as among the most challenging tests on the endurance calendar and attracts riders from all over the country, and sometimes from Europe.

“With London hosting this year’s Olympics, there’s a real buzz in the equestrian world at the moment and this year’s Golden Horseshoe is set to be as popular and exciting as ever,” said ride organiser Barbara Wigley.

“Exmoor takes a long time to dry out after the winter, but at the moment the ground is good. I do, however, hope that riders have remembered to include plenty of hillwork in their training because the 2012 route includes Exmoor’s famous – but very steep – Punchbowl in the competitive classes.”

This year’s event has a special prize up for grabs, too. Equine physiotherapist Mary Bromiley is offering £100 to the first rider on an Exmoor pony to complete 50 miles in one day...

Jeremy Reynolds and A Kutt Above took the win in a flat-out race to the finish at the Endurance Ranking Trial CEI 160km in Mt. Pleasant, TX. The race served as the USEF Selection Trial for the 2012 FEI World Endurance Championship taking place in August.

Forty-five of the nation’s top endurance riders took to the trail at Priefert Ranch, March 31, over a “cloverleaf” course designed to replicate the Championship environment. Nineteen crossed the finish line and were named to the United States Equestrian Federation’s “long list” of contenders for the FEI Championship, Aug. 25 in Euston Park, Thetford, England, where only six U.S. riders will compete.

Reynolds narrowly beat Wendy MacCoubrey and Reach for the Gold, at 8:16:03 versus her 8:16:05. Becky Hart was a close third riding No Repeat (8:16:09), Heather Reynolds was fourth on Riverwatch.

The top finishers were strong all day and recovered well in the vet gates. Reynolds (San Jose, CA) and A Kutt Above also earned the coveted Best Conditioned Award/ Along with the other 18 finishers the pair was named to the USEF “Long List” of championship contenders (the horse with both Reynolds as riders).

Although Reach for the Gold was ridden by proxy jock MacCoubrey, the horse made the Long List with owner Valerie Kanavy of Fort Valley, VA. Both Kanavy and Hart (San Juan Bautista, CA) will seek a chance to earn another FEI World Endurance Championship title. Kanavy currently has two titles to her name and Hart will seek a fourth, this time with her own No Repeat.

Endurance chef d’quipe Emmett Ross said he is “extremely pleased” with the horses that made the long list and also with the fact that three young riders completed the race, calling it “encouraging for the future.” Junior and young riders in the sport of endurance are any riders between 14 and 21 years of age. While Ross acknowledged “a few disappointing absences” on the list – notably Lindsay Graham and Monk, who failed to finish, and Kelsey Russell, who chose to skip the event – overall he characterized it as “a fantastic group of horses and riders who all have potential to be extremely competitive.”

Race day was hot and humid in Texas, but with the exception of one boggy area that had to be repeated several times, the triple-loop course rode well and the times were good. Ross said he was “very pleased with all the officials, staff and volunteers [at] Priefert Ranch,” which he called “phenomenal and very supportive with both materials and staff.”

In addition to the 19 finishers, Ross has three discretionary horse/athlete combinations he can add from among those who did not compete or complete in Texas. Two of those slots have been taken: he named John Crandell III and Heraldic even though Crandell elected to withdraw Heraldic after the gate 2 vet check, which the horse passed but Crandell had concerns about deficiencies in his mount’s metabolics.
Jeremy Reynolds and his grey arabian A Kutt Above.

Jeremy Reynolds and A Kutt Above, are ready to race in Texas.

Ross also named to the long list Deborah Reich who was unable to compete in the selection trial due to injury. Her horse, DJB Juniper, finished seventh.

Sometime in July the top 19 plus Ross’ wildcards will go on to complete a short course (40-60km) that will serve as an evaluation for soundness, and 12 horse and rider pairs will be named to a “short list” from which the final six competitors will be named (plus alternates) no later than one week prior to the FEI Championship, which takes place a week after the Olympics and about 35 miles away.

USEF director of endurance and reining Vonita Bowers said the U.S. has a talented field of athletes and horses from which to choose, and is looking forward to once again standing on the international podium for endurance, from which the country has absented itself since Valerie Kanavy’s individual Gold Medal in 1998.

“We’ve won medals at the Pan Ams, but not since ’98 at the World Championship level,” Bowers said, noting, “Prior to ’98 we won on a regular basis, then the rest of the world caught up. They started figuring out how to compete. Also, she noted, the sport has changed. “The U.S. version of endurance had always been on a very difficult course – closer to the Tevis Cup. The international rides are much flatter, faster courses. So the sport has changed a lot, and now we’re the ones catching up.”

The USEF is verifying the complete long list. It will be posted here as soon as it is made available.

Great Britain: First home in 120km ride

Midweekherald.co.uk - Full Article

Wednesday, March 28, 2012

Young endurance rider Dace Sainsbury from Lyme Regis has won a 120km FEI 2* ride with her horse Ballota.

The pair are aiming to get qualified for the Young Rider championships which will be held in Belgium this year.

After a winter spent keeping Balotta (Lottie) fit and building her stamina up, they had their first training ride on Exmoor with lots of hills and tough terrain.

They started the competition season successfully, finishing third in the 80km Jubilee Trail ride in early March.

To qualify for the Young Rider Team the pair had to pass a 120km FEI 2* ride early season. Endurance rides have vet gates where the horses have to pass strict recovery and fitness tests before they can carry on. Dace entered for a ride at Bury St Edmunds, and despite the distance, Lottie finished full of running, and held a 20 minute lead over the field at the final vetting...

Bahrain riders crash out

Gulf-daily-news.com

Sunday, March 25, 2012

BAHRAIN'S Royal Endurance Team riders Jaffer Mirza, Ahmed Al Hazza and Abdulrahman Al Zayed crashed out of the 120km Dubai Crown Prince Endurance Cup held yesterday.

The trio were unable to complete the prestigious four-stage ride, which took place at the Dubai International Endurance City in Seeh Assalam area in the UAE.

Both Al Zayed and Al Hazza were eliminated after their horses suffered injuries at the end of the first stage, which was over 40 ams, while Jaffer made his exit during the second stage for the same reason.

Host country's Sultan Al Beloushi of Al Reef Stable steered Corns to victory with a total ride time of four hours, 21 minutes and 46 seconds at an average speed of 27km per hour.

Behind him was Nad Al Sheba Stable's Abdulla Al Ghanim on Angelica (4:22:49) in second place while Fatma Jassim Al Mirri (4:22:02) of Seeh Al Salaam Stable was third on Ohio.

Riding Saj, Al Zayed completed the first stage in one hour, 36 minutes and eight seconds with a 27km per hour average speed.

Al Hazza, who came second in the 160km Sheikh Mohammed bid Rashid Al Maktoum Endurance Cup held two months ago, was also out after his horse Sondon was unable to reach the finish line.

As for Mirza, he successfully passed the veterinary examination at the end of the stage on Dancer, clocking 1:36:16 and an average speed of 24km per hour.

Thani Al Muhairi of Seeh Al Salaam Stable took the lead after the first stage in 1:25:42, followed by Al Reef Stables' Abdulla Khamees (1:25:47) and Mohammed Sulaiman (1:25:59) in second and third positions, respectively.

In second stage, which was also over 40 kms, Al Muhairi maintained his lead in 2:57:49. Ghanim Al Owaisi (2:57:50) moved up to second and Al Mirri (2:57:53) climbed into third position.

Al Beloushi (3:48:09) rose up to second and ahead of third Khalfan Al Sabri (3:48:05) of Ammar Stable.

At the end of the race, Bahrain Royal Endurance Team captain Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa said his team took part in this event due to the strong linking both Bahrain and the UAE.

Shaikh Nasser congratulated the Crown Prince of Dubai Shaikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum for the success of the race.

Scotland: Borders ride sees new distance

Thesouthernreporter.co.uk - Full Article

Published on Thursday 22 March 2012 19:43

THE Scottish Borders Endurance Club saw the return of their popular Harstanes ride near Jedburgh on Sunday.

With an excellent turnout of more than 70 horses and riders, and the weather playing its part too, the day was a great success.

Options included 18km or 30km and the new 40km, this being a first for Scotland, the caravan and vet crew were kept hard at work.

The ride itself was marked out well with the usual orange tape and pink arrows ideal for helping direct the 12 non-members who attended on the day.

With a great long stretch of railway line in position at the beginning of the ride and lengthy woodland tracks, it had the makings of what was a very fast ride...

Great Britain: Riders treated to glorious views to cape Cornwall

Thisiscornwall.co.uk - Full Article

Western Morning News
March 23 2012

The St Just endurance ride is the most westerly endurance ride in Britain, jutting right out into the Atlantic.

As anyone who lives in the far west of Cornwall will tell you this region not only has its own unique landscape but its own very local weather. Abu Dhabi: Kamila Kart seems to be enjoying her endurance season here in the UAE.
The Polish rider won the gruelling 240km three-day Shaikh Sultan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Festival endurance ride at the Boutheib Endurance Village in Al Khatem here yesterday.

Riding 11-year-old Novisaad d Aqui, Kart did very well to finish a mere two seconds ahead of Ceinwen Morgan on Kalawind de Sommant with the UAE's Noora Abdullah Ahmad Al Hosani on Fanmar Baza in third place.

Feature ride

Kart's win in the feature ride of the Festival, organised under the patronage of Shaikh Sultan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President's Representative, is her second after the Polish rider had earlier done well in two Ladies rides.

Kart had won the President's Cup for Ladies over 90km held at the Emirates International Endurance Village in Al Wathba and had earlier finished sixth in a Ladies Ride held at the same venue.

The three-day 240km ride was run with the riders negotiating 80km each day. At the end of the first day, Kart was in 10th position.

At the end of 160kms and after two days, Sabrina Mendiz was leading with Kart in fourth place.
In yesterday's final 80km leg, Kart initially slipped a place lower to finish the first stage in 5th place, but later gathered pace to top the final stages to stave off the second-placed Morgan.
Another consistent performer this season, Fatima Jasem Saeed Al Marri came up on top once again, this time winning the 120km Shaikh Sultan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Ladies Cup. Al Marri, who won the prestigious National Day Cup earlier in the current season, pipped Emma Victoria Finnie of Germany with just a second separating the two after five loops covering a distance of 120kms...
