THE Cabinet yesterday allocated BD150,000 to combat the disease.
It also instructed the Municipalities and Agriculture Ministry to carry out the preventive plan.
"The decision reflects the government's keenness to protect human health, the environment and animals," Cabinet Affairs Minister Shaikh Ahmed bin Ateyatala Al Khalifa said.
A MYSTERY illness, which forced vets to put down eight horses in three weeks, has been identified as the highly contagious and potentially fatal bacterial infection glanders, or equina, that can be passed on to humans.
However, Bahrain's top vet yesterday allayed fears of a serious outbreak, saying authorities were already acting on the new information and said it could be "easily" managed.
Municipalities and Agriculture Ministry livestock director Dr Salman Abdul Nabi said every horse in the country was being examined for signs of the illness.
He added that blood samples from of horses, suspected of either having the illness or coming into contact with infected animals, were currently being analysed by specialists in the UAE.
"We have sent samples from nearly 400 horses to a specialist laboratory in the UAE and the 10 results we have got so far give us the all-clear," he told the GDN.
"We now know we can manage this quite easily and are taking appropriate action."
However, he stressed that a ban on moving horses between stables or taking part in competitions still existed to avoid the bacteria spreading.
He revealed around a dozen horses currently had symptoms of the infection, but said some were already showing signs of recovery.
Glanders is a highly contagious disease in horses, horses, mules and donkeys, but it can be passed on to humans who have direct contact with infected animals or contaminated objects.
The painful respiratory infection can cause skin lesions and signs include fever, chills, muscle aches and chest pain, but it can also lead to pneumonia and death without treatment.
Infection can also occur in dogs, cats, goats, camels, hamsters and guinea pigs.

ROYAL Endurance Team rider Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa won the End-of-Season Endurance Ride Championship in the early hours of yesterday at the Bahrain International Endurance Village in Sakhir.
The Bahrain Royal Equestrian and Endurance Federation (Breef) chief completed the gruelling overnight race in five hours 19 minutes and three seconds.
Riding Kintamani Ragindi, Shaikh Khalid overcame a rough start to the 120-kilometre, five stage event but managed to power ahead of the field later on.
He was seventh after the opening 30-km leg, but rose to fourth after the second 30-km sector. He was then in the top three over the next two stages, covering distances of 24 kms and 20 kms, respectively, before making his decisive push over the last 16 kms to clinch first place.
Ahead
Shaikh Khalid led fellow-Royal Team member Ahmed Abdulla Al Hazza to the finish by a mere three seconds. Al Hazza, on Tarabic Carl, was ahead for most of the race, safely holding first place from legs two through four, but lost control over the late stages.
The leading pair were followed by Abdulaziz Khalifa representing Al Asayel Stables, who was on Minit Maid. Khalifa finished the race in 5:20:47, and also overcame a poor start as he found himself 12th after stage one.
Royal Team rider Abdulrahman Mohammed Al Saad came fourth. Riding Mystic Traveller, Al Saad had a total ride time of 5:45:53. Teammate Ratan Singh on Affiniti rounded out the top five in the championship. Singh completed the event in 5:51:25.
Both Al Saad and Singh managed late surges after starting the race outside the top 10.
At the end of the ride, Shaikh Khalid and the rest of the winners were presented their respective trophies by Royal Endurance Team captain and Bahrain Olympic Committee president Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
Shaikh Nasser congratulated Shaikh Hamad on his victory and praised him for putting on a fantastic performance. Shaikh Nasser added that Shaikh Khalid was a very deserving winner.
The championship was organised and run by Breef. It flagged off at 5pm on Friday evening.
A total of 60 riders from Bahrain and Saudi Arabia took part. The ride was originally not announced due to a possible postponement because of the outbreak of a virus that has affected many horses around Bahrain.
But after medical checks and assurances from veterinarians and under the guidance of Shaikh Khalid the event was give the go ahead.

Malaysia: New Horse-pital Opens In Terengganu

SETIU, April 30 (Bernama) -- Staff at a hospital which today begins operations at the Terengganu International Endurance Park (TIEP) here, are horsing around.
Now, hold your horses. It's not what you think. On the contrary, the hospital's intentions are honourable.
The aim of the RTES/UPM Equine Hospital is to provide basic medical treatment to horses.
The first of its kind in the East Coast, the hospital can cater to up to 300 horses at one go, offering facilities which include X-ray, ultrasound and blood tests.
State Youth and Sports Committee chairman Datuk Abdul Rahin Mohd Said said that for starters, the hospital would treat horses from the Royal Terengganu Equestrian Stable.
"For the time being, the hospital will operate every Friday and Saturday from 9am to 5pm.
"However, operating hours will increase when there is public demand and a mechanism will be devised to determine payment for personal horse owners," he told reporters Friday.
Abdul Rahin said, through the hospital, horses could receive treatment faster and at a cheaper price as compared to sending them for treatment in Kuala Lumpur.
He added that cases which required surgery would be referred to another hospital to be set up at the Terengganu Equestrian Resort in Kuala Ibai, Kuala Terengganu.
"This other hospital is expected to begin operating in June," he said.

The Namibia Equestrian Federation (NAMEF) held its first ever awards ceremony on Saturday, 24 April 2010. A total of 47 awards were handed over, of which six were for endurance riding.

Malaysia: Equestrian race attracts 130 riders from various nations

MALACCA: Endurance riding is becoming increasingly popular not just elsewhere in the world but also in Malaysia, and this was evident when some 130 riders took part in the recent Malacca Grand Invitational Endurance Ride (MGIER) 2010.
It is an athletic event that combines the skill of rider and endurance of horse over a distance of up to 160km.
Held for the third year, the three-day event was organised by the Malacca Government and sanctioned by the Federation Equestrian International (FEI) and Malaysian Endurance Riding Society.
Besides riders from Australia, Chile, France, Germany, Indonesia, New Zealand and Singapore, riders from a host of Malaysia-based riding and equestrian clubs and academies were also in the fray.
A notable absentee was the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin, who had graced two previous rides. He finished third in the 80km event last year.
Event technical director Hamdan Mohd said Tuanku Mizan could not compete for a third consecutive year as he had a knee injury and was receiving treatment.
For the uninitiated, endurance riding is an equestrian event with a course over rugged terrain that include hills, rivers and wooded areas.
Besides making the best time under a pre-determined maximum time, the welfare of the horse is also an important determining factor.
MGIER 2010 started from Stadium Hang Jebat and took riders through the surrounding area.
TMKN Endurance Team of Kelantan took top honours in the 120km event with riders Mohd Azizie Ismail, Dr Hj Nik Isahak Wan Abdullah and Rosdan Mohd Nor leading the way in an overall time of 17 hours, 19 minutes and 33 seconds.

Florac is back!

Done. The association will organize Equestrian Endurance Lozere, in Florac, the European Championship 2011. A deserved win, after a year of administrative campaign, Crucis organizers candidates for this type of event big size ... First, get the needed support from local institutions. Then, meet the requirements of the French Equestrian Federation (FFE). Finally, seduce the Federation Equestre Internationale (FEI). Year, then flies. Until last March, where Ian Williams (Technical EIF), Nicky Kennedy (FFE responsible internationally) and Jean-Louis Leclerc (national coach) came up to judge the relevance of a historic nomination . For Florac is history - the cradle of endurance which is now entering adulthood. This is THE race. Hard. The cold, the mountain, the stone. Inevitable. The atmosphere, the glory, pleasure. Race mythical, heroic, anti-arithmetic. The distance does not count it in kilometers, but not, each of which approximates the arrival of the Grail. Perhaps even more than a race, a symbol. He, for Ian Williams, a return to "qualities of yesteryear" endurance. In other words, those of Jean-Louis Leclerc, the return to "a race of riders rather than a race horse." Back to basics, then. Such a discipline that combines sports, adventure and geography. But this version of the endurance is it soluble in the future, focused on racing flat, fast and sand? In terms of message, the choice of Florac is significant. Europe remains the stronghold of endurance. It is she who sets the rules. Not the emerging discipline - Dubai, Qatar, UAE. Yet Tartas has won this year at 26Km / h to 24 Huelgoat ... But the problem here is not who is right, but rather to note this: every race draws its riders, who themselves are responding to different motivations - the passion, money, image classification, habit, aligot. Each race has its place on the international circuit. As against this choice of Florac, which remains a great news and demonstrates the qualities of a permanent organization, shows an evolution. The European Championship seems to forge an identity, a DNA code. A European identity inevitably and naturally, attached to a tradition, values, to a method. But the European personality, strong and engaging, should not come to oppose the more contemporary, a worldwide circuit otherwise covered. In each culture, and to each his nature - the desert does not pass through a pine forest. The World Championship, then, must not resemble the European deadline. Riders to choose one or the other or both. Without hierarchy. Without trial. Unconstrained. And federations can do nothing except respond to the situation, open like never before ... In the meantime, go tomorrow night to celebrate the event Florac through a ritual historically and genetically European French: drink a cup together champagne.

Jordan and the Arabian horse - the vibrancy of heritage

AMMAN - At the bottom of a sweeping tree-lined drive lies the archetypal equine fairy tale.
With its freshly painted blue and white archways, horseshoe windows and clean swept yard, the Royal Stables for the Preservation of the Arabian Horse gleams.
Over every stable door hang the majestic, beautifully refined heads of purebred Arabian horses, while in the paddock brood mares attend to their foals.
At only two months old, the seven newborns frolic, spindly legged, around their mothers, pressing for milk and attention. Each holds the promise of classic equine Arabian beauty; the high tail, the delicately sculpted, powerful legs, the intelligent high-strung gaze and the flared nostrils. The best mares are selected in the breeding process and, the sire to many of these newborns is a Belgian Arabian, a prized show horses.
The stables, of which HRH Princess Alia Bint Al Hussein is the director, is home to over 225 Arabian show horses, many of whom are globally renowned. Hlayyil Ramadan, an Arabian stallion who brings together Egyptian and ancient Jordanian lines, won the 2006 World Arabian Horse Organisation trophy and represented Jordan at the 2002 and 2004 World Championships.
The beauty and uniqueness of these horses is exemplified in their value. Some of the Arabians are worth millions of dollars, according to Jihad Shhaltough, who is the stable manager of Prince Ali Ben Hussein's stables and works closely with the Royal Stables.
Beyond the paddocks lies another means of promoting Arabian horses within current society - the Olympic equestrian discipline of endurance horse racing. This section of the stables belongs to Princess Alia’s son Abdul Hamid Mohammad Al Saleh, according to Shhaltough.

AMMAN - The International Wadi Rum Endurance Race, one of the toughest and most beautiful forms of horse racing, kicks off on Saturday with the participation of 55 riders representing four countries.
The event, to be held under the patronage of HRH Princess Alia, president of the Royal Jordanian Equestrian Federation (RJEF), will witness riders from Italy, Spain and Iraq, in addition to Jordan, taking on 160km and 80km of pure desert riding routes that will put the horse and its rider under severe testing condition.
Ghalia Noordein, executive manager of RJEF, told The Jordan Times that all preparations to host the event are being finalised.
"We want to make sure that everything is set according to the directives of HRH Princess Alia and that everything will go smoothly as planned," she said.
"We have a host of professional riders and their horses to compete in the race which we believe will give a competitive edge to the event and create one of a kind event," Noordein added.
The International Wadi Rum Endurance Race has gained popularity due to the calibre of riders taking part in the event who represent the best in the world while their magnificent beasts are trained according to the highest standards.
"We have excellent participation this year especially from local riders who have been training for such a long time for this event and we hope to conquer advanced positions," Noordein said.
According to Noordein, the winning horse in the endurance race is the first one to cross the finish line while stopping periodically to pass a veterinary check that deems the animal in good health and fit to continue.
The event, recognised by the Federation Equestre Internationale, will start early Saturday morning at 6:00am in the Qweira area while the pre-ride vet check will be held Friday.

Aussie Breed Traces Its Roots

Brumbies join the ranks of Dubai’s many horse imports.
A few years ago Ali Mohammed Al Mohairi - the racing manager for deputy ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum - took a trip to the outback of Australia's Northern Territory. He was looking for a very particular breed of horse and before he knew it, they'd found him.
"There was a mare and a foal and they were galloping from behind and I yelled to go, I was screaming at the driver," he recalled. "Then they crossed in front of us and the sparks were coming off the road. When they came to a lake, they jumped straight in and swam across."
Mr Al Mohairi had finally seen first-hand and in their own environment the dash and daring of Australia's famous "brumbies" and they weren't done yet. After they crossed the lake "There was a rocky hill on the other side and I said: 'Impossible, they will not climb that.' And they did."
It may play like a deleted scene from Jurassic Park, but the brumby breed is not science fiction and like many Australians, their pedigree traces back to the other side of the world. In fact, they are said to come from Arab horses taken to Europe. Now it seems, some of them, are going home. IRT recently transported 14 brumbies to Dubai for the Sheikh, to be trained for the rigors of endurance racing.

2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games Spectators Can Experience All Kentucky Has To Offer
April 13, 2010
LEXINGTON, KY - This fall, visitors from around the world will get a chance to experience all the sights, sounds and tastes that Kentucky has to offer during the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, without ever leaving the Kentucky Horse Park.
"Our goal is to immerse visitors in all that is Kentucky so that before they return home, or the next time they travel, they won’t be able to resist seeing the real thing," said Mike Cooper, Kentucky's Commissioner of Travel & Tourism.
While the primary focus of the 2010 Games is eight world championships in equestrian sport, spectators from around the world will be able to enjoy The Kentucky Experience, which will present the multitude of Kentucky cultural, historical and artistic features that make the Bluegrass State such a unique and special place among the world's travel destinations.
Located at the Kentucky Horse Park and grounds of the Games from September 25 through October 10, The Kentucky Experience is a major exposition that will feature the nine tourism regions of the Commonwealth, from the lakes in the west, to the mountains in the east, and even to the caves and Corvettes in the south.
The Kentucky Experience will have three Pavilions to entice visitors. The first stop, though, is The Kentucky Experience Welcome Center. At the Welcome Center, visitors will get a dose of Kentucky hospitality as hosts will provide a list of daily events and provide information on each region represented.
Next, walk through the regions of Kentucky and experience the Bluegrass State in the Exhibit Pavilion. Images, artifacts and audio will combine to present a virtual tour of the Commonwealth. From Ali to Colonel Sanders, horses to houseboats, artists to aquariums, and so much more, the Exhibit Pavilion will present an unbridled Kentucky experience.
The Kentucky Product Pavilion is designed give visitors a taste of Kentucky, literally. Local bourbon distillers will be on hand to show (and let you sample!) the bourbon distilling process, in addition to local wineries and wine tastings. Kentucky ales will also be featured. Visitors will also be able to taste a selection of Kentucky Proud products, such as beer cheese and bourbon balls. Beautiful handmade Kentucky folk crafts and world-famous art will be on display and even available for purchase.
Follow the sounds to the Entertainment Pavilion, where performances will be occurring throughout the Games, all by Kentucky artists. Kentucky is well known for its Bluegrass and Country artists, and will be found at the entertainment pavilion, but so too will the full array and diversity of talent that resides in Kentucky.
The Welcome Center and pavilions will surround a beautiful Kentucky courtyard garden designed by nationally known master gardener and Rockastle County native, Jon Carloftis.
See it, experience it... The Kentucky Experience!
Access to the The Kentucky Experience will be available with a Grounds Pass or a competition ticket. Grounds Pass ticket sales begin April 16 at 10 a.m. at www.alltechfeigames.com, www.ticketmaster.com, at any Ticketmaster outlet, and at (800) 745-3000. Tickets will be on sale at a promotional rate of $20 until May 31. Grounds Pass tickets will be priced at $25 after that time. All children 12 years of age and under will be granted free entry with a paying adult.

MELAKA, April 7 (Bernama) -- More than 100 local and international endurance horse riders have confirmed their participation for the Melaka Grand Invitational Endurance Ride (MGIER) 2010 which starts on Friday.
Melaka Stadium Board executive director Mohd Saufi Jaafar said the list comprises 88 local riders from 24 equestrian clubs in the country and 12 riders from the United States, Chile, Australia and New Zealand.
"The number of riders may increase by Friday," he told Bernama here on Wednesday.
Mohd Saufi said the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin, an avid endurance horse rider, would be in Melaka for the MGIER but not as a participant because he had recently undergone an operation.
The MGIER, awarded a two star rating by the Federation Equestre Internationale (FEI), would enable participants to earn qualifying points for the FEI World Endurance Championship, he said.
He added that MGIER, organised for the third time since 2008, would feature three categories, 120km, 80km and 40km.

THE Easter long weekend is used by many Australians as a chance to kick back and unwind.
THE Easter long weekend is used by many Australians as a chance to kick back and unwind.
This wasn’t the case, however, for the many members of the Far-A-Way Endurance Riders Club at the weekend.
With a strong membership base drawn from throughout the Sunshine Coast, the club hosted its first ride of the season in Imbil – the 2010 Easter Endurance Carnival.
The competitive line-up included an 84km ride in addition to a 120km challenge and an epic marathon traversing 320km.
The three events were highlights of a schedule involving nine events in total spread across five action-packed days.
Eager spectators gathered in Imbil yesterday as the marathon ride was expected to come to a close at the Imbil Showgrounds.
The course negotiated by riders was largely similar to that of previous years, with hills and undulating countryside.
During these events, horse safety is of paramount importance and all endurance rides were carried out subject to current specifications for the sport in Australia.
Horses were monitored for their condition at various checkpoints, including physical inspections involving the measuring of heart rate.
The event was only possible due to the army of volunteers that donated their Easter long weekend to take part in a sport that captures their hearts.
A highlight of the Easter Endurance Carnival was the social atmosphere, where young and older riders alike were able to assemble together after a day’s riding at the camp grounds and share their experiences.
Organisers thanked competitors for nominating and the many volunteers for their participation.

Mongol Derby: Riders from 7 countries and an innovative veterinary programme for Year Two

With riders from 7 Countries - UK, USA, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, Belgium and Venezuela - the 2010 Mongol Derby is set to be the most hotly contested yet.
Riders include a Martial Arts expert from Texas, an Olympian 'Madonna' from New Zealand, two siblings from South Africa and a brave Brit who previously broke her back riding a horse.
2009 Mongol Derby was a "huge success...a brand new sport tourism variety"
Dr. Orgil, Director of the Ministry of Agriculture's Veterinary Unit and the Chief Equine Vet in Mongolia
The Mongol Derby team have announced an innovative Veterinary Training Programme that aims to leave a lasting equine legacy in Mongolia.
More than 20 local vets will be trained to become part of the international team of equine experts that will ensure the welfare of the 1000 semi-wild horses taking part in the race across the Mongolian steppe.
Led by four star accredited FEI vet Jenny Weston, the specialist training will also leave a legacy that will benefit other events and races in a country renowned for its love of horses."The training will cover exercise physiology and the types of conditions that you see in horses involved in endurance riding and the long-distance horse racing that is a part of Mongolian culture," explains Jenny. "This will benefit not only the horses involved in the Mongol Derby but also the many thousands involved in the annual Nadaam festival."
The training is part of a comprehensive horse welfare program including pre-race training for the riders led by Maggie Pattinson, Chef d'Equipe of the British Home International Endurance Team.
Please also see this link for a full veterinary report on the inaugural 2009 Mongolian Derby.
The race format is based on Chinngis Khaan's legendary postal system which could relay messages thousands of miles in a matter of days. Horse stations manned by nomadic families are established at intervals of 40km or less along the course and riders change horses and undergo veterinary inspections at each one.
The Mongol Derby is a joint venture led by British company The Adventurists with Mongolia based Tengri Group and backed by the Mongolian government's Ministry of Agriculture who acclaim the Mongolian Derby as “having great potential to develop our country”.
Applications are open now for 2010 to adventurous riders from around the world. More information about the world's longest and toughest horse and how to apply can be found on the official website: www.mongolderby.com

Kuwait: The first Arabian long distance horse race begins

Q8nri.com
March 29th, 2010
Kuwait: The first horse race on endurance and capacity begun in Kuwait on Saturday. The race was organized by the Kuwaiti Association for Horses, and took place in the Kebad area. Many of the jockeys participating in the race rode authentic horses, riding for four stages.
The first and second stage was 30 km in length, while the third and fourth stage involved 20 km, including a qualifying and classification stage.
Vice?President of the Association, Ahmad Apul said that the endurance and capacity race is "the first of its kind in Kuwait" and the total is 100 km in length. He clarified that the race began at 5pm at the Heritage Village.
Apul added that a list of important instructions and guidelines were set for those who wished to participate in the race, stressing the need to adhere to these rules.
He said that the Association was honored to organize this race, calling for a promotion of the sport, as Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) urged his followers to teach their children archery, swimming and horse riding.
He said that Kuwait has a good reputation in the field of horse riding in the Gulf and the Arab world. He added that the race involves a large number of jockeys from neighboring countries like Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, UAE and Arab and foreign countries as well.
It is noteworthy to mention that despite the bad weather, a large number of fans witnessed the start of the race. The dusty weather that occurred at 10 in the evening was a significant impediment to the Jockeys as they attempted to reach the end as soon as possible.

American Endurance Ride Conference Names Hall of Fame, Pard'Ners Winners
Les Carrphoto by Steve Bradley
USEF Press Release: March 25 2010
Author: By Troy Smith
Dr. Les Carr accepts the equine Hall of Fame trophy for his endurance half-Arabian gelding, Tulip.
Amid the hoopla of its annual convention last month in Reno, NV, the American Endurance Ride Conference’s (AERC) Dave Rabe was inducted into the nonprofit organization’s Hall of Fame, along with Tulip, the ultra-long distance half-Arabian gelding owned by Dr. Les Carr.
Also winning one of endurance’s top prizes, the Pard’ners Award, was Robert Ribley and his endurance horse, Tari.
Hall of Fame Person: Dave Rabe
Dave Rabe, a retired postmaster from Carson City, NV, is currently third on the list of high-mileage riders in the organization’s 38-year history, with 46,512 miles through 2009. Those numbers include 862 ride finishes—200 of them in the top 10, with 55 completions of 100-mile, one-day rides.
“I guess I like to ride more than most of you,” said Rabe to the hundreds of endurance riders assembled at the national awards banquet, held at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno.
Rabe is as well known for his typical riding outfit—a tank top and cut-off jean shorts—as he is for the miles and miles of trails which he marks before most rides. “Dave is the only person I know that will get to a ride early to mark trail for the ride managers, ride the ride, then go around helping people and filling water troughs in camp, then go out and mark more trail for the next day of the ride,” said Stephanie Palmer-DuRoss of Queen Creek, AZ, one of the many people who nominated Rabe for the Hall of Fame award.
An exemplary rider, Rabe is often trusted to ride other people’s horses. As the award presenter, Ride Manager Dave Nicholson, DVM, said, “He’ll ride anything.” Rabe answered back, “I like a horse to buck and run away once in a while.”
“Dave is one of the few people I will trust with one of my own horses,” said rider Karen Chaton of Gardnerville, NV. “I know that Dave will always have the horse’s best interest at heart. He can take horses that nobody else can even stay on and turn them into incredible athletes.”
He is also known for helping out riders along the trail, even risking his own placing to do so. “On the trail during a ride he slows to help any lost, beginning, wayward or worried riders and horses,” said Kevin Waters of Rimrock, AZ.
Hall of Fame Equine: Tulip
The invincible Tulip, Dr. Les Carr’s half-Arabian gelding, finished the 2009 endurance ride season with 21,155 miles. As the first endurance horse to surpass 20,000 miles, the 21-year old equine athlete’s Hall of Fame induction was well deserved.
Since Tulip’s first endurance ride in 1993, he has averaged more than 1,200 miles of sanctioned endurance rides every year, an incredible average considering the minimum length of these rides is 50 miles. More than 25 different riders have contributed to Tulip’s mileage, although Dr. Carr, of Somerset, CA, has taken over exclusively since 2001 (except one ride where Dr. Carr’s wife, Jill, rode Tulip).
“Tulip shows no sign of aging when I see him on the trail and looks like he will go on forever,” said John Parke, who nominated Tulip for the year-end award. “Tulip is amazingly tolerant of quirky people and ponies, and is a true character in his own right. We have ridden so much together that I always relax a little riding next to him out of some inner recognition that I am really out on the endurance trail where I belong.”
Pard’ners Award: Robert Ribley and Tari
A coveted AERC award, the Pard’ners award, named in honor of the late Mae Schlegel and her horse Pard, honors the horse-and-rider team that exemplifies friendship, enthusiasm and sportsmanship. While Tari is now deceased, he and Robert Ribley, a longtime endurance rider from Grass Valley, CA, had a long and storied career together that made them deserving of the award.
Tari, a ¾-Arabian, ¼-Standardbred gelding, started 116 rides with Robert between 1985 and 1994, and finished 116 times, an amazingly difficult feat. Of those, 25 rides were 100-mile, one-day rides.
Tari’s last ride was the 20 Mule Team 100, when Tari was 27 years old. “To get a 27-year-old horse through a tough 100-mile takes teamwork. That’s why Robert and Tari are Pard’ners,” said nominator Mike Tracy of Hollister, CA. “However competitive they were, they always had good sportsmanship. As a rookie myself, back in 1989, I was always asking Robert questions during a ride. Even though we were competing against one another, he never failed to give me good advice.
“Tari was much more than an endurance horse,” said Tracy. “Robert used him for bow and arrow hunting. On one such trip in the mountains they got lost. They kept going around in circles until about midnight. Robert decided to drop the reins, and Tari found their way back to camp.”
The AERC convention focused on a theme of “Preserve Our Trails” which emphasized the importance of trails to distance riding. Along with speakers who spoke on horse health and anatomy subjects were trails specialists Mary Hanson and Rick Potts, representing the National Park Service. “Preserve our trails was a great theme to help bring our trail issues to the forefront," said AERC member Connie Creech, of Carson City, NV. “The talks highlighted the importance of preserving our trails for endurance riding, which we all must appreciate and work with.”
Endurance riders are currently midway through the 2010 ride year, and look forward to the 2010 convention, which will be held next March, again at the Grand Sierra in Reno, NV.
To join AERC, or for more information about endurance riding, please contact the AERC office, located in Auburn, CA, at (866) 271-2372, email aerc@foothill.net, or visit www.aerc.org.

Dubai Crown Prince Endurance Cup winner led from first stage of 160km event
Dubai: Yousuf Ahmad Al Beloushi extended his red-hot form to rewrite another world record while Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, finished a steady second in yesterday's Dubai Crown Prince Endurance Cup, 160-km FEI-Three star ride at the Dubai International Endurance City.
Al Beloushi, riding 11-year-old grey gelding Jayhal Shazal, led from the very first stage in the six-stage 160km ride to register another victory for the Al Reef Stables. Al Beloushi and Jayhal Shazal completed the ride in five hours 45 minutes and 44 seconds to break the world record held by a horse trained by the rider himself. The horse was ridden by his younger brother Sultan Ahmad Al Beloushi in the President's Cup earlier this year. Sultan on Charlandre El Sharif broke his own world record for a 160km ride by more than seven minutes when he had clocked 6 hours 21 minutes and 12 seconds.
Final loop
Yousuf, who averaged 27.77kmph for the 160km ride, unleashed a terrific speed of 35.53kmph on his horse in the final loop. "This is one of my greatest wins and I am very happy that the world record stays in the family," said Al Beloushi, who has been one of the most consistent riders on the UAE circuit. He also holds the record for 120kms.
Shaikh Hamdan used to ride as a preparation for the World Endurance Games to be held in Kentucky later this year when he kept himself in the leader group for most of the race, finishing the last two stages behind the winner.
Riding Hattam, Shaikh Hamdan completed the ride less than six minutes behind the winner with all three top finishers breaking the world record.
His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, also took part in yesterday's ride.
Two more rides were held by the Dubai Equestrian Club as the curtains came down on the endurance season here at this venue.
Harmke Margreta Westervest of The Netherlands won the Dubai Crown Prince Cup riding EDL Agbahr. She completed the 120-km distance in 4hrs 04mins and 17 seconds to finish ahead of Emirati pair Abdullah Thani Bin Huzaim and Mansour Ebrahim Al Salman. In the national ride over 100 kms, Abdullah Ahmad Al Shaikh finished on top riding M. Calfio.

Abu Dhabi : The UAE's domestic endurance season may be on its home stretch, the temperatures may be rising but there just seems to be no stopping Yousuf Ahmad Al Beloushi.
The trainer-cum-rider of Al Reef Stables, owned by Shaikh Tahnoun Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of President's Private Department, once again battered the record for a 120km ride by more than 11 minutes in yesterday's Shaikh Rashid Bin Hamdan Al Maktoum Challenge Festival 2010 at the Emirates International Endurance Village in Al Wathba, Abu Dhabi.
Riding 12-year-old chestnut gelding Trajano, Al Beloushi, who had rewritten the record (four hours 32 minutes 26 seconds) last month in Dubai with a timing of 4 hours 32 minutes 26 seconds, lowered it further to 4 hours 18 minutes and 52 seconds.
Battling to second place was Ali Khalfan Al Jahouri on Saluki, and it was this Al Wathba rider who had held the record for two years before Al Beloushi broke it on February 6 this year.
Al Beloushi, who recorded an average ride time of 27.81 kmph during the 120-km FEI two star ride said, "I am very happy as this is the third win for Trajano. The conditions were tough as it was a bit hotter than expected."
"Once I got into the lead in the fourth loop, I sensed that my horse was in a good condition so I decided to try and go for a record," said Al Beloushi, who has been one of the most consistent riders and trainers over the last couple of years.
Yesterday's ride was attended by His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
Shaikh Rashid Bin Hamdan Al Maktoum along with Adnan Sultan Saif Al Nuaimi, Director General of the Abu Dhabi Equestrian Club, Ali Al Muhairi, Racing Manager of Shaikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and Minister of Finance and Lara Sawaya, Managing Director of Tasweeq attended the prize distribution ceremony.

On his part, Bahrain Royal Equestrian and Endurance Federation (Breef) president Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa said he was pleased with the great turnout of riders for this event.
The Breef's chief praised the noticeable co-operation from the participants with the organisers which made the ride an all-round success.
He added that most of the riders completed all three stages and should finish two more similar events to become eligible to take part in any of the International Equestrian Federation championships.
