2014 USA Endurance Team Member: Heather Reynolds and Chanses

July 27, 2014
by Merri Melde-Endurance.net

It's a good thing for Heather Reynolds and the 2014 USA Endurance Team that Chanses didn't make it as a racehorse. "He was really fast, but he would just look around, rather than race," Heather says. "He's really laid back, a super relaxed horse. He can turn it on when he needs to. When asked to do it, he'll do it. He's just not going to volunteer," she laughs.

Now owned by Heather and husband Jeremy Reynolds who make up Reynolds Racing, and partner Skip Lightfoot, the Reynolds obtained the "cool looking" 9-year-old bay Arabian gelding in 2012 just 15 minutes down the road from their place in Dunellon, Florida. "We were short on horses at the time, and our friend Lynn Ashby recommended him to us. We usually take her word pretty seriously."

That Chanses happened to be a half brother to Jeremy Reynolds' 2012 World Endurance Championship ride in Great Britain, A Kutt Above (they finished 21st), was an added bonus. Both horses are by the sire Patriot Missle.

Chanses had already done a season of endurance rides with previous owner Severiano Martinez, so he was ready to go when the Reynolds bought him and started riding him on the trails. After doing 5 rides in 2012 (including a 25 with co-owner Skip Lightfoot aboard), which featured a win and Best Condition in the Ft Howes 160-km FEI ride, Chanses stepped up in his training and performances. The 16-hand gelding won 1st place and Best Condition in the 50-mile Gator Run with Heather in January, won 1st place and Best Condition in the 75-mile Broxton Bridge with Jeremy in February; and after 3 consecutive pulls for lameness in 100-mile rides in March (after a fall on course), May and July (Tevis, pulled at the Lower Quarry at 96 miles), the gelding finished first in the 100-mile New Mexico Desert Classic Pioneer with Heather in October. After he won his next start, the January 100-mile Broxton Bridge with Heather, the Reynolds knew they had a possible USA WEG Team contender in the gelding.

After the challenging USA Team Trial April 18-19 in Ehrhardt, South Carolina and a number of exhaustive pre-ride and post-ride veterinary inspections, Heather and Chanses topped the USA Team Shortlist that was announced on June 19th for the World Endurance Championship at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games in Normandy, France.

A long-time AERC endurance rider (she started as a Junior at age 11), 37-year-old Heather has over 18,000 endurance miles, including 4 Tevis buckles, a Tevis Cup win and 2 Haggin Cups (Best Condition at Tevis), and extensive international experience. This will be Heather's fourth time on a World Championship Endurance team, having competed in Jerez, Spain, in 2002; Kentucky, USA, in 2010, and Great Britain, in 2012.

As a 25-year-old on the World Championship team in Spain, Heather left a big impression on her roommate and teammate Bev Gray, even after her horse Crystal's Charm was unexpectedly pulled at the first vet check for lameness. "Heather immediately got out and started helping the rest of the teammates, and cheering along the course. She's a pro. A career pro," Bev said. "She's my friend; those are memorable times that I'll never ever forget - the bonding we had, and the fun."

Heather is known being humorous in almost any situation, and for being cool under pressure. Chanses will probably retain his cool in the August 28th 160-km race, seeing as he's so relaxed. "I think it will work out great in the herd dynamic overseas, because he's so laid back," Heather says. "He won't end up wasting a bunch of energy the first couple of loops. I don't think he'll get his panties in a bunch."

Heather thinks the USA Team's prospects of winning a team medal in France are "super strong. This is probably the best team the US has ever had. I think that the group dynamic is awesome. And Emmett [US Chef d'Equipe Emmett Ross] has put us through the ringer as far as soundness and the scrutiny on the horse itself. It's been a much higher standard than the past, so I think our odds of arriving at the starting line with sound horses is higher than usual. And everyone that has been selected has amazing backgrounds and their horses have great records, so if luck joins us, I think our team will do amazingly well." She laughs and slightly amends her statement, "If the Horse Gods let the horses arrive on French soil unscathed, we'll be good!"

Bev Gray concurs, "The growth that you see from Heather since Spain, to Normandy, is dramatic. She's a professional, and she's going to do the USA a fabulous job."

Mongolia: Not your run-of-the-mill horse derby

Heraldsun.com - Full Article

Jun. 27, 2014 @ 05:17 PM
Wes Platt

Rose Sandler wants to gallop in the footsteps of a conqueror.

Centuries before Pony Express riders thundered across the untamed American West, Genghis Khan established a long-distance postal system using horse messengers in the Mongol steppe.

Since 2009, a group known as The Adventurists has hosted the Mongol Derby. It’s a race that covers 621 miles of rough, marmot-riddled terrain through unpredictable weather, all on the backs of 25 different horses that riders can only hope want to go the same direction as them.

“It’s going to be awesome, life-changing,” said Sandler, a former Rougemont resident who now lives in Culpeper, Virginia, but often visits Durham to enjoy the music scene at places like Motorco.

The race through the Mongolian wilderness was inspired by Genghis Khan’s use of horse stations – known as morin urtuus – to allow messengers to travel the breadth of his empire, from Kharkorin to the Caspian Sea...

By: Lisa Slade

The Swiss Equestrian Federation has named Pierre E. Genecand as a candidate for the FEI presidency and submitted the official candidacy to the Fédération Equestre Internationale today, July 10. Genecand announced his intention to run in April this year.

It’s presumed that Genecand will run against incumbent FEI president HRH Haya bint al-Hussein, who could make herself available for a third period of office after an FEI Extraordinary General Assembly changed statues to allow one person to serve three terms. The election will take place in December in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Genecand, a 64-year-old insurance broker, successful businessman and the former owner of Gesrep AG, lives in Geneva and Buenos Aires (Argentina), and he has been president of the Hublot Polo Gold Cup Gstaad, the most important Swiss polo tournament, for almost 20 years...

Canadian Endurance Rider, Katya Levermann, Finishes in Fourth in NAYRER

Riding Tracy Reynolds' TEF Sunflash (CRF Jalal x Lewisfield Sunraf), a 14-year-old Arabian gelding, Katya Levermann of One Hundred Mile House, BC finished in fourth place in the NAJYRC-CH 4* FEI Championship race.

The race, 120 km in length, consisted of five loops around and just outside of the Kentucky Horse Park grounds.

After the first loop, Levermann and TEF Sunflash were in 11th place, and the pair moved up to fifth place after the second loop. Following the third loop, they slipped to sixth place. They were sitting in fifth place, 13 minutes off of third place, heading in to the last loop. With a very fresh, fit horse, Levermann strategically planned her advance. The pair quickly gained ground and completed the ride just over a minute behind the bronze medal winner.

"First and foremost I would like to thank Tracy Reynolds for lending me such a wonderful horse, Flash," said Levermann, who is attending her first NAJYRC. "I am just thrilled with his performance, and I couldn't be prouder to represent Canada. Coming in fourth was dream come true."

"Katya did an absolutely incredible job and her fourth place finish today will be a personal best," said Maura Leahy, chef d'équipe. "She worked every loop to progress, and we are absolutely thrilled with where she finished. Our whole team--Tracy Reynolds, the owner; Glenn Sinclair, the team veterinarian; Peter Levermann, Katya's father and Katelyn Reynolds, as a guest--did a huge job helping Katya and bringing her through to the finish today."

Senior Dutch endurance official steps down over WEG selections

By Horsetalk.co.nz on Jul 19, 2014

A senior endurance figure in The Netherlands has resigned from a key role over his concerns about three horses in the frame to be competed by Dutch riders at the World Equestrian Games.

Marc van den Dungen announced last Monday he was standing down as independent chairman of the Endurance Technical Commission of the Royal Dutch Equestrian Federation, the KNHS.

His resignation followed the nomination of three riders for the Dutch endurance team with horses, at least two of whom are owned by interests in the United Arab Emirates.

Van den Dungen’s concerns centre around the racing workload of the horses and he accused the Dutch equestrian body of not putting horse welfare as a top priority – a claim the federation has rejected. The federation backed the selection of the horses in question, saying it was in line with recent FEI rules.

Van den Dungen said: “The reason for discontinuing my function is the fact that I do not want to be associated with an organisation which pays lip-service to horse welfare that, when it comes to success at the World Equestrian Games 2014, no longer places horse welfare at the top of its agenda.”

Great Britain: New qualification for Brechin rider

Brechinadvertiser.co.uk - Full Article

Brechiner John Thomson, who is an Endurance rider for Great Britain, has qualified as a sports psychologist.

The achievement follows a successful Cairngorm 100 (Blue Mountain 160) endurance test ride.

The MA (Hons) graduate, who originally studied psychology at the University of Dundee, gained a Diploma in Sports Psychology with Distinction.

Being no stranger to the stresses and strains of top level competition, John dug deep into his own experiences during the diploma course.

Endurance is a tough, challenging sport that places huge amounts of physical as well as psychological stress on it’s serious competitors and demands high levels of focus, motivation and concentration for long periods of time. He said: “Sometimes the race is played out in a five and a half square inch court – the space inside your head!...”

USA's Kelsey Russell: The "Gonna Go Someplace Kid"

July 17 2014
by Merri Melde-Endurance.net

Kelsey Russell, a Young Rider, is one of the USA Endurance Team riders for the 2014 World Equestrian Games Endurance Race in France

"She's as cool and calculating as any of the senior riders," says USA Chef d'Equipe Emmett Ross of Kelsey Russell, the first Young Rider to ever make the senior World Championship USA Endurance Team. "And of course she's a chip off the old block, because she rides for Valerie Kanavy, and Valerie has been coaching her ever since she's been a kid."

Kanavy hardly needs any introduction in endurance circles, being a 2-time former World Endurance Champion in 1994 in The Netherlands, and 1998 in the United Arab Emirates. Being only 18, Russell isn't as well known yet, but that's not because she's been hiding in the stables.

"I've been on horses pretty much my whole life," Russell says. "With my aunt I do barrel racing and western riding." It wasn't till about 5 years ago that Russell boarded her horses in Kanavy's stable across the street and discovered endurance. "I started riding endurance with her the following winter, and I have been ever since."

It was obvious to Kanavy that Russell was a horsewoman from the beginning. "She was like a little monkey that hung on, no matter what. Sometimes the horses would do things, and we'd be going, 'Oh no!', but she didn't come off," Kanavy laughs.

Russell, from Williston, Florida, did her first endurance ride in January of 2010 on one of Kanavy's horses, Layla Z Gold. Since then, Russell has racked up over 1800 AERC miles, a first place finish in the 2011 North American Young Riders FEI Championships aboard Kanavy's My Wild Irish Gold, a 6th place finish aboard Kanavy's Gold Raven in the 2011 FEI Young Rider Junior World Endurance Championship in Abu Dhabi, and a 5th place finish with My Wild Irish Gold in the 2013 Young Rider Junior World Endurance Championship in Tarbes, France.

Russell will be riding My Wild Irish Gold on the USA Team in the 2014 World Equestrian Games Endurance Race in Normandy, France on August 28, 2014. "Irish" is a 10 coming 11-year-old bay Anglo-Arabian mare, owned and bred by Kanavy's Gold Medal Farms. She is Russell's favorite horse in the stable to ride. "She's comfortable; she likes to go, but she has a brain. She doesn't get stupid, and she doesn't waste her energy," Russell says.

Russell's first endurance ride on Irish was a 2nd place finish in the Goethe Challenge 75-miler in December of 2010. Since then, they've completed 10 endurance races in the USA together (including 4 wins and a Best Condition), and the 2 overseas races. Their best ride, Russell says, was the Young Rider Junior Championship in France last year where the mare covered the 120-km course in 6 1/2 hours.

Russell is not daunted at all by riding alongside experienced senior riders in such a prestigious Championship race in France. "I ride with quite a few of them and I hang out with them at the rides so I know them pretty well. It'll be different than the Young Riders, but I think it'll be fun and it'll be a really good experience," she says matter-of-factly.

Kanavy knows Russell can handle the pressure, and is delighted with her accomplishments. "I'm pretty proud of her all the way around. I'm proud of her for what she does in school and all her other activities too; it's not just about riding. She's an all-around 'Gonna Go Someplace Kid.' She has great family support, and I think where she is, and what she's accomplished, is because she's determined, and she is a dynamite worker. I'm more proud of the way she's conducted her whole life; and her good will and determination to go somewhere and be somebody, and be the best you can be - she takes that to another level."

Russell will be riding at the top level in France next month, aboard a top level mare, with a top level team, coach, family, and mentor rooting her on, and it's likely she will take it all in stride.

Correction:
Kelsey Russell is the second junior to ride as a senior team member.
Joe Mattingly rode as a 16-year-old as a US Team Member at the 1988 World Championship in Front Royal, Virginia and placed 7th overall. In 1990, at the age of 18, he was a US Team Member at the 1990 World Championship in Stockholm, Sweden at the first ever World Equestrian Games (his horse retired at 75 miles).

Canada: Katya Levermann and TEF Sunflash to represent Canada at NAJYRC

EnduranceCanada

Ottawa, ON, July 15, 2014 - Endurance Canada is very pleased to announce that Katya Levermann, from 100 Mile House, BC, will be attending the North American Junior Young Rider Championships (NAJYRC) in the endurance competition, which will be held on Friday, July 18. Levermann is both excited and honoured to again be a member of the Canadian Team heading to Kentucky. Unfortunately, her endurance teammates have been forced to withdraw, so Levermann will be our sole representative. Her dad, Peter, will accompany her to this competition, and chef d'équipe Maura Leahy and team veterinarian Glenn Sinclair, DVM, will be there to support Levermann as well.

Levermann will be riding a leased horse, TEF Sunflash, a 14.2 hh 14-year-old Arabian gelding, bred and owned by Tracy Reynolds from Pennsylvania. There is a wonderful story behind this horse- last year Levermann actually had, as her first choice, the opportunity to take Sunflash to Kentucky. She declined, since she was also qualified on Parker AES (a Canadian-bred), which enabled a US Young Rider, Michael Bishop, to ride him instead. Bishop rode Flash to a fifth place finish and won the best conditioned award. This year it's Levermann's turn. On her 15th birthday her parents surprised her with the announcement that she was going to the NAJYRC with Flash, and she was thrilled.

The entire endurance community, from coast to coast, will be following her every stride as she canters along the 75 miles of Kentucky bluegrass pathways. Good luck!

A complete biography for this most accomplished young rider can be found here.

Chef d’Equipe Andrea Baker, commented; “This year sees a complete mix of experienced riders and those progressing on from Young Rider level. It’s exciting for some of the young riders selected as this will be there first senior championships; whilst all five boast previous championship experience for GBR. There’s a great team network behind the squad and we’re looking forward to the final push to this summer’s competition.”

Chef de Mission, Will Connell commented; “Equestrian Team GBR were well represented at the Test Event in 2013 so they will have a good understanding of what lies ahead of them. They have prepared professionally and I wish the riders, their crews and the team staff an enjoyable and successful Games."

Commenting on their selection;

Annie Joppe: “It’s like a dream come true, I’m just over the moon. It’s been a whole team effort; I’ve known my crew for a long time and we’ve been working as a team for several years now, so huge thanks to them and especially to my husband. Dil [Dilman] is an absolute superstar, I’ve brought him up through the ranks and he really is a horse of a lifetime and it will be my second Championship with him. We’ve been working for so long and training so hard and it’s all come together – now we just have to do the job.”

Beth Langley: “It’s my pony’s sixth championships having come up through Young Riders with her, but it’s our first senior Championships so I’m so pleased. It feels completely different to Young Riders but what I’ve been preparing for; really excited about being part of the bigger GB team, I’m definitely going to try and watch other sports out there. My family [who are also Beth’s crew] have never missed a ride and will be out at WEG with me; it’s great to have such great support and backing, and from my sponsors as well.”

Annette Masterson: “Very pleased and honoured to be selected and I’m really looking forward to representing Great Britain out in Normandy. It will be my third championships but I think it will be very special because it’s a WEG. Lenny is a half-brother to El Sabio [Annette’s reserve horse] and will be competing at his second championships, after the Europeans last year.”

Catriona Moon: “I am absolutely thrilled; I’d been shortlisted for Jerez (2002) and Aachen (2006), and had to pull out before Kentucky qualifying so for fourth time round, to make it is indescribable. This is the one I’ve been trying for, it’s just amazing. To have mum there [Jackie Moon, who is head crew for Catriona] is just going to be extra special, and also to be alongside my best mate from university, who’s been crewing for me since 2001, Zofia [also part of Catriona’s crew], is going to be amazing.”

Anna Williams: “I’m absolutely chuffed to bits, it’s been a long journey and I’m really very, very happy. It’s my first senior championships; it’s always something you strive for, to represent your country, and WEG does have a special atmosphere. To see it from a riders take will be a whole different thing; last year we decided to move back to the UK from Switzerland, it definitely feels now that we made the right decision. I owe a huge thanks to my parents, how they’ve supported my move back to the UK and my aim for WEG, and to the whole of my crew. It doesn’t get better than this, it’s the pinnacle, it’s breath-taking.”

All riders compete as individuals at the Championships, as well as representing Great Britain in the team competition. The one-day competition is set over a distance of 160km and sees five vet checks during the course - horses must be declared fit at the pre-ride vetting and each vet gate in order to progress.

Equestrian Team GBR is supported by the UK Sport National Lottery funded World Class Programme; the British teams are very grateful to the support they receive from official Team GBR suppliers Dodson and Horrell, Land Rover, Mears Country Jackets, NAF, NuuMed, Point Two Equine, Tagg Equestrian and Toggi.

South Africa: Saddle up in the Swartberg

Iol.co.za - Full Article

July 10 2014 at 06:00pm
By Myrtle Ryan

Cape Town - South Africa’s famous horse endurance event, an eye-watering, bum-numbing ride of over 210km, takes place annually in Fauresmith in the southern Free State.

Not for me, thanks. I would probably fall off long before the nether regions became even remotely uncomfortable. Still, riders often travel considerable distances to participate in qualifying events for this bone-cruncher, which challenges both horse and rider.

One such qualifier is the De Zeekoe Meerkat Challenge, organised by Saddlebag Horse Events on behalf of the Winelands Endurance Club.

For those who might be champing at the bit to get the De Meerkat Challenge under their saddle blanket, SM Travel sussed out the terrain...

India: Giddy up, how about some endurance riding?

Mydigitalfc.com - Full Article

By Yana Bey
Jul 10 2014

Endurance horse riding, though a developing and little-known discipline in India, has a national champ-ionship in our country. A charming adventure sport, it is yet to get its fair share of public, media and sponsor attention. Hopefully, that will change with the holding of an event — Kross Terrain Endurance Ride 2014 — on the outskirts of Jodhpur in the second week of October this year. Those who are riders, or interested in equestrian sport, should begin preparing to attend this event.

Though it is competitive, endurance riding is a world away from conventional horse racing — and truly rewarding for those with an attachment to animals. It is far removed from the first-past-the-post-at-any-cost aggression of traditional races. Over the course of the long ride (there are events of 120, 100, 80, 60 and 40 km), there are periodic veterinarian checks at ‘vet gates’ to ensure that the animal is in good enough condition to carry on. For instance, a pulse rate over 64, dehydration level over 3, a gait that is not smooth, gut sound that is not normal and any bruise, swelling or wound on the legs, girth, back, withers or anywhere else can see a horse eliminated from the competition...

BY ALASTAIR BOND 11:29AM 7 JUL 2014

NETWORK, the sire of Champion Chase hero Sprinter Sacre, will be available for lease – not for sale – following a change of heart by the French government.

It was announced in June that Network and his fellow French National Stud stallions were to be offered at the Arqana December Breeding-Stock Sale as part of a complete dispersal of the France Haras stock, but after negotiations between breeders’ representatives and minister for agriculture Stephane Le Foll, the state has decided to remain owner of the stallions but offer them for lease...

Italy: No investigation into endurance horse death

Horseandhound.co.uk - Full Article

The Italian Horse Protection Association (IHPA) is “upset” that there will be no further investigation into death of a Maktoum-owned endurance horse after a ride last August.

The Italian Equestrian Federation (FISE) — which IHPA first approached 9 months ago — has finally advised no federation rules were broken.

Sonny Richich of the IHPA asked both FISE and the state authorities to intervene after Django De Vere died in a clinic in Sardinia...

Disbanding the French National Stud

Horsereporter.com - Full Article

July 4, 2014
Pamela Burton

4 July 2014, France ~ The recent announcement of the sale to private parties of some of the last stallions from the historic French National Stud seemed like the final nail in the last horseshoe of a 300+ year-old model—that was working.

The continued sell-off of stallions from pedigrees that served the French Cavalry, won tournaments of endurance and stamina, were tested for speed and came out champions, and became the backbone of the breeding industry of France, has been cause for alarm in the French breeding industry.

In a last-minute effort to save the remaining horses, a proposal to the Minister of Agriculture has been made to continue the genetic legacy that has been nurtured for over three centuries. A group of top officials have penciled a recommendation that would not sell, but would lease stallions of the National Stud, leaving them under the ownership of the people of France. This proposal is on the table and is awaiting offers from qualified breeders, according to the French news agency...

Canada Awarded 2015 FEI Pan American Endurance Championships

Horse Sport July 3, 2014

Equine Canada and Endurance Canada are pleased to announce that the 2015 FEI Pan American Endurance Championships, a race 120km in length, will be held in Millbrook, ON, at Cayuse Creek Ranch.

The competition will be held in Ganaraska Forest, southern Ontario’s largest conservation area. The forest has over 11,000 acres of treed area and over 600 km of trails. The advantage of this venue is that there will be no public roads and only proven horse friendly private landowners. The course will be designed for mostly double track flat trails which will maximize the speeds for the horses and minimize any hazardous trail conditions.

“The Organizing Committee is looking forward to hosting this prestigious event at Cayuse Creek Ranch,” said Bob Coleman, the Championships’ organizer. “It will be an honour to have some of the best endurance horses and riders from North, Central and South America at this event here in Ontario.”

“This event will do much to promote this amazing equine sport, as well as highlight the athleticism of the Arabian horse, the breed of choice for endurance racing, but will also showcase the recreational and tourist attractions of the area,” continued Coleman. “The race will take place through the beautiful Ganaraska Forest, which I believe is the best venue in Ontario for endurance racing with its wide selection of trails – from flat, sandy and fast to narrow, technical ones. Roadwork is minimal on the course, which is important for safety reasons.”

The public is invited to spectate free of charge at the Pan American Endurance Championships, and will be tentatively held the week of July 6, 2015 to correspond with 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto.

Australia: Life in the Saddle - Alywn Torenbeek

ABC.net/au - Full interview

Broadcast: 29/06/2014 12:17:17 PM
Reporter: Pip Courtney

In the bush, no-one likes a skite. But while modesty's an admirable trait, it's kept many with fascinating lives from writing their memoirs.

Alwyn Torenbeek's a good example. Despite an extraordinary life, it took years of badgering from his family before the 77-year-old retired drover agreed to put pen to paper.

At just 21, he was Australia's bronc-riding champion, known for his bravery, natural talent and cheeky showmanship. But his biography is about more than fame. There's adventure, tragedy, romance and mateship, and that indomitable bush trait, endurance.

An endurance riding camp has its own pace. There's plenty of time to catch up with mates and swap stories, some of them tall.

At Alwyn Torenbeek's camp, you're assured of a yarn or five.

Few in the camp realise this genial grandfather's tales aren't tall, they're true. But this old bloke is in three halls of fame - Rodeo, Stockman's and Equestrian...

2014 Nordic Baltic Championship

Nordic Baltic Championship in Froland, Norway – 28th June

by Leonard Liesens

This year it was Norway's turn to welcome the Nordic Baltic Championship, after Estonia last year. This championship gathers the Scandinavian (Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland) and Baltic countries (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania).

The Nordic Baltic is not only for endurance, as competitions of show jumping and dressage took place in the same province. The endurance event took place in the picturesque region of Froland, in the south of Norway ( enchanting lakes, rocks and forest).
The trail was challenging with gravel roads, forest pads and plenty of ups and downs. It hasn't rained in this part of Norway for weeks, so everything was dry as was the going in most of the course.

There were near fifty couple at the start of the two competitions: a CEI** of 120km for seniors and a CEI* of 80km for juniors.
Coached by the Belgian Leonard Liesens, the Norwegians clinched the gold medals in the two categories: juniors and seniors, team and individual. As the President (Per Anders Owren) and the Sport Manager of the Norwegian Federation were attending an endurance event for the first time, one couldn't dream about a better outcome for the day.

The CEI** was won by of one of the most experienced horse of Norway, Shah Nahim ridden by Vidar Ydstebo while the CEI*YR first place was won by Rita Eiesland riding Ka Piaget Virkku. Actually there were exactly the same horses winners as last year in Estonia.

Hunterdon riders make short list for World Equestrian Games team

By Lillian Shupe/Hunterdon County Democrat
July 01, 2014

Local equestrians are one step closer to going to the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games later this summer.

Oldwick resident Sinead Halpin was named to the three-day eventing team. She will ride Manoir De Carneville Syndicate’s Manoir de Carneville. Halpin was a strong contender for the Olympic team two years ago but did not make the final cut.

Ballynoe Castle RM, a horse owned by Tewksbury Township residents Carl and Cassandra Segal, also made the team. He will be ridden by Buck Davidson.

Eventing has three phases — dressage, cross-country and show jumping.

Tewksbury Township native Doug Payne had his eye on a spot on the three-day eventing team but did not make the list. He and Halpin however, were named to the High Performance Summer/Fall Training Lists.

Both made the “World Class” list, meaning the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) believes they possess the ability to be competitive anywhere in the world. They will participate in training sessions with US Eventing’s Chef d’Equipe, David O’Connor.

Dr. Meg Sleeper of Kingwood Township has been named to the “short list” for the endurance riding team by the USEF.

She is currently ranked third on the list aboard Syrocco Reveille, a 14-year-old Arabian mare. If something happens and that horse can’t compete, Sleeper’s other horse Syrocco Cadence, an 11-year-old Arabian mare, is the first alternate.

Sleeper was one of two riders who represented the United States at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games endurance test event last summer. The ride was held at Sartilly in Manche, France.

Endurance rides are generally 50 to 100 miles long. Horses go through several thorough veterinary exams before, during and after a race. Heart rates, respiration and temperatures are closely monitored. Only horses deemed fit to continue at each vet check are allowed to keep going.

The World Equestrian Games will be held Aug. 21 to Sept. 9 in Normandy, France.
